Propagation of supremely short light pulses in fibers

Abstract

The gain coefficient of the modulation instability in the fiber doped with two-level atoms is derived by solving the Maxwell-Bloch equations. The erbium-doped fiber is taken as an example to show the results. It is found that, the gain coefficients from the pumped erbium ions and Kerr effect are additive.

Evaluation method for the dynamics of an erbium-doped fiber laser

Florentin I. Vasile, Paul Șchiopu

We propose a simple method for integration by numerical computations of the atomic rate equations for three-level systems and the laser amplifier equations. We calculate the gain coefficient in erbium-doped fiber considering the effects of pump on the system dynamics. Described the atomic rate equations for three-level system and the dynamics Maxwell-Bloch equations for erbium-doped fiber laser amplifier is presented.

"Analytical Model of Pulse Amplification in Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier "

Nour. A. Naser, Muhammed. R. Harb, Hassan Abid Yasser

"Doping a part of the optical fiber core by (Er3+ ) ions in presence of external pumping power will lead to form the erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA).The performance of this optical amplifier depends on (the power and the wavelength of the pumping laser, the power and wavelength of the input signal, amplifier length, ion concentration). These parameters will affect the characteristics of EDFA such as amplifier gain, gain saturation, noise figure and output power. However, these characteristics can be determined by solving the EDFA propagation and rate equations. The solution of these equations of two-level laser medium can be done numerically. In this paper, we are proposed a novel method to solve these equations. The reconstructed results are perfectly coincided the well known numerical results.

Maxwell–Bloch dynamics and modulation instabilities in fiber lasers and amplifiers

Guido H. M. van Tartwijk, Govind Prasad Agrawal

We investigate analytically the occurrence of modulation instability in doped fiber lasers and amplifiers using a Maxwell–Bloch description for the dopants and without making the usual parabolic-gain approximation. We find a new modulation instability occurring near the Rabi frequency, which is not predicted by the conventional complex Ginzburg–Landau model. We discuss the implications of this new instability for fiber amplifiers and lasers and analyze the effects of the saturable host absorption on the laser instabilities. Atomic detuning is shown to significantly enhance the new modulation instability, in both the normal- and the anomalous-dispersion regimes.

Slow and fast light propagation in erbium-doped fiber

We study propagation of light pulses and modulation in an Er-doped fiber in the regimes of anomalously slow and superluminal group velocities. The pulses experience either delay or advancement depending on the pump power.

Pulse width depending group velocity on Erbium-doped fibers

We report a change in the propagation regime (subluminal-superluminal) of light pulses in a pumped erbium doped fiber. We explain this behavior as a propagation effect. A pulse-width separator based on this effect is proposed.

Modulation and Gain Modulation Performance of Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifier Pumped by 980nm-Laser

Dian Liu

The erbium-doped fiber amplifiers pumped by 980 nm-laser can be simplified into two level system.Neglecting amplifier spontaneous emission,we obtained the population of metastable state in steady-state case by Newton-Raphson iteration from EDFA rate equation.Introducing a sinusoidal time variation power as modulation of signal or pump,we got the expression for amplitude and phase modulation of population of metastable state. We got the numerical analytic model of gain modulation and discussed about last simulation results.
