Quantum amplitude modulation noise of semiconductor lasers with weak optical feedback

Hua Deng, Yaakov Shevy

We study the impact of weak dispersive optical feedback on the intensity noise of semiconductor lasers by using two-mode quantum Langevin equations with nonlinear gain and loss. The nonlinear gain arises due to spectral hole-burning and population pulsation and the nonlinear loss arises from saturable absorption by deep trap levels. We find that both the total noise and the main mode noise can be reduced with weak dispersive optical feedback; for moderate side mode suppression ratio, the main mode noise can be reduced by as much as 10 dB. Furthermore, the AM noise spectrum is found to be sensitive to the feedback phase.

Quantum noise in a laser with nonorthogonal polarization modes

A. M. van der Lee, A. L. Mieremet, Martin P. van Exter +2 more

We describe the quantum-noise behavior of a laser that has nonorthogonal polarization modes. The nonorthogonality of the modes leads to excess quantum noise. Theoretically, we derive the excess noise dynamics of the laser, including the saturation of the gain medium. Experimentally, we have measured the noise dynamics in the polarization, intensity and phase degrees of freedom of a 3.51-$\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{m}\mathrm{}$ HeXe laser and we obtain good agreement with theory. When the modes are made nonorthogonal we observe: (i) excess intensity and phase noise, (ii) spectral coloring of the excess intensity noise and (iii) correlations between the polarization-angle noise and the intensity noise. The excess phase noise is found to be partly suppressed by the polarization-anisotropic part of the saturation of the gain medium.

Strong quantum mechanical squeezing based on nonlinear dispersive loss in semiconductor lasers

We predict that a combination of frequency-dependent outcoupling and optical non-linearity in semiconductor lasers can create sharply intensity-dependent loss that squeezes inten-sity noise far below the shot noise limit.
