Quantum trajectory in a time-dependent potential : oscillator in a monochromatic field

Abstract

The 'quantum trajectory' obeying the Schrodinger equation with a time dependent potential is theoretically determined. As an illustration of the theory the trajectory of a charged harmonic oscillator in an electromagnetic field obeying the wave equation is shown along with the orbital motion of the corresponding classical particle.

Trajectory of the harmonic oscillator in the Schrodinger wave

Yoshio Nishiyama

A trajectory of a harmonic oscillator obeying the Schrodinger equation is exactly derived and illustrated. The trajectory resembles well the classical orbit between the turning points, and also runs through the tunneling region. The dynamics of the 'particle' motion and the wave function associated with the motion are proposed. The period of a round trip on the trajectory is exactly equal to that obtained in classical mechanics.

An Exact Quantum Theory of the Time-Dependent Harmonic Oscillator and of a Charged Particle in a Time-Dependent Electromagnetic Field

Harry R. Lewis, W. B. Riesenfeld

The theory of explicitly time-dependent invariants is developed for quantum systems whose Hamiltonians are explicitly time dependent. The central feature of the discussion is the derivation of a simple relation between eigenstates of such an invariant and solutions of the Schrödinger equation. As a specific well-posed application of the general theory, the case of a general Hamiltonian which settles into constant operators in the sufficiently remote past and future is treated and, in particular, the transition amplitude connecting any initial state in the remote past to any final state in the remote future is calculated in terms of eigenstates of the invariant. Two special physical systems are treated in detail: an arbitrarily time-dependent harmonic oscillator and a charged particle moving in the classical, axially symmetric electromagnetic field consisting of an arbitrarily time-dependent, uniform magnetic field, the associated induced electric field, and the electric field due to an arbitrarily time-dependent uniform charge distribution. A class of explicitly time-dependent invariants is derived for both of these systems, and the eigenvalues and eigenstates of the invariants are calculated explicitly by operator methods. The explicit connection between these eigenstates and solutions of the Schrödinger equation is also calculated. The results for the oscillator are used to obtain explicit formulas for the transition amplitude. The usual sudden and adiabatic approximations are deduced as limiting cases of the exact formulas.

Gaussian Wave Packet for a Time-Dependent Harmonic Oscillator Model of a Charged Particle in a Variable Magnetic Field

Salah Menouar, Mustapha Maamache, Jeong Ryeol Choi

We obtained the exact solution of the Schrodinger equation for a time-dependent harmonic oscillator model of a charged particle in a variable magnetic field, which is the semiclassical Gaussian wave packet centered around the classical guiding trajectory (p(subscript i), q(svbscript i)). The Gaussian wave packet presented here is well-localized in space and useful for determining various features of the classical-like wave packet.

THE QUANTUM MECHANICS OF PARTICLES IN TIME-DEPENDENT

Quadrupole Fields, Roy J. Glauber

We solve the quantum mechanical problem of the motion of charged particle in a quadrupole field that varies arbitrarily with time. The time-dependent wave functions are shown to be in a simple one-to-one correspondence with the wave functions of an ordinary static-field harmonic oscillator. We define and generate a set of coherent states for the charged particle that provide Gaussian localization about the classical particle trajectories. When the field variation is periodic in time, these minimum uncertainty states are shown to pulsate periodically in size and in phase. Under the action of external fields, coherent states retain their coherence. We discuss the way in which the Kapitza pseudopotential approach approximates the present exact results.

Bohmian trajectories of the time-oscillating Schrödinger equations

Dandan Li, Jinqiao Duan, Lin Li +1 more

Bohmian mechanics is a non-relativistic quantum theory based on a particle approach. In this paper, we study the Schrödinger equation with a rapidly oscillating potential and the associated Bohmian trajectory. We prove that the corresponding Bohmian trajectory converges locally in a measure, and the limit coincides with the Bohmian trajectory for the effective Schrödinger equation on a finite time interval. This is beneficial for efficient simulation of the Bohmian trajectories in oscillating potential fields.
