Particle scattering by two level atoms in a strong radiation field

L Hahn, Ingolf Volker Hertel

A set of coupled equations for the particle scattering by a two level atom in a strong near resonant radiation field is derived from the time dependent Schrodinger equation. This set of equations is discussed in a first and second order approximation. The result can be visualized in terms of a scheme in which the two well separated (nondegenerate) atomic states split, each into two energy levels. The splitting depends on the strength of the field and on the difference between the resonance frequency and the frequency of the incident light and is typically a few meV. In this scheme all possible elastic, quasielastic, inelastic and superelastic transitions between the four levels can be induced by collision processes. In addition, multiphoton processes may occur if the scattered particle remains long enough in the interaction region. Estimates of the two photon gain process for electron and heavy particle scattering by sodium atoms in a dye laser field are given. It is suggested that the superelastic processes may play an important role in laser induced gas breakdown, even if the laser frequency does not coincide with any atomic transition. Spontaneous emission of atoms in laser fields is also treated. The results are similar to the particle scattering processes.

Quantum Optical Description of Radiation by a Two-Level System in Strong Laser Fields

Zhao-Yang Peng, Huayu Hu, Zengxiu Zhao +1 more

We develop a quantum optical description of radiation from a two-level system (TLS) in strong laser fields, which provides a clear insight into the final states of the TLS and the harmonics field. It is shown that there are two emission channels: the Rayleigh-like channel and the Raman-like channel, which correspond to the TLS ending up in the ground state and excited state after the emission, respectively. The numerical result shows that the harmonics are mainly produced by the Rayleigh-like channel. In addition, according to the coherence of emission among the emitters, the radiation is divided into coherent parts that result from the semi-classical dipole oscillation and incoherent parts that result from the quantum fluctuations of the dipole moment. In the weak field limits, the Rayleigh-like channel corresponds to the coherent parts, and the Raman-like channel corresponds to the incoherent parts. However, in strong laser fields, both channels contribute to coherent and incoherent radiation, and how much they contribute depends on the final excitation. By manipulating the laser field, we can make the Rayleigh-like channel produce either coherent or incoherent radiation.

Time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy of two-photon-excited singlet states of mercury

Farhad H. M. Faisal, Richard E. Wallenstein, Richard E. Teets

The authors report on the two-photon excitation of 1 S 0 and 1 D 2 states in mercury by pulsed ultraviolet dye laser radiation. A time-resolved registration of two-photon-excited fluorescence provided an accurate determination of the radiative lifetimes of the levels 7 1 S 0 to 9 1 S 0 and 6 1 D 2 to 8 1 D 2 . In an external magnetic field Zeeman quantum beats and the zero-field level crossing signal have been observed. Furthermore the authors describe conditions which cause strong emission of amplified spontaneous radiation in transitions between highly excited mercury levels.
