Abstract

In this paper, we study mathematically and numerically the ground states of rotating spin-orbit coupled two-component Bose-Einstein condensates modeled by the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations. Firstly, we rigorously prove the existence and nonexistence results for the ground states and derive some analytical properties, including the virial identity and negativity of SOC energy. Secondly, we propose an efficient and accurate preconditioned nonlinear conjugate gradient (PCG) algorithm to compute the ground states. We truncate the whole space into a bounded rectangular domain and readily apply the Fourier spectral method to approximate the wave function. The PCG method is successfully adapted with appropriate modifications to the adaptive step size control strategy for the one-parameter energy minimization problem and to the choice of preconditioners, achieving great performance in terms of accuracy and efficiency. Lastly, we carry out extensive numerical experiments to confirm the spatial spectral accuracy by traversing the most commonly-used initial guesses for each component. Moreover, we investigate the effects of local interaction, angular velocity, spin-orbit coupling and external trapping potential on the ground states, and predict some interesting physical phenomena, such as vortex lattices.

In this article, we study mathematically and numerically the ground states of three-component rotating spin-orbit coupled (SOC) spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates modeled by the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations (CGPEs). Firstly, we rigorously prove existence result of the ground state and derive some analytical properties, including the virial identity and negativity of SOC energy. Secondly, we propose an efficient and accurate preconditioned nonlinear conjugate gradient (PCG) algorithm to compute the ground states. We truncate the whole space into a bounded rectangular domain and readily apply the Fourier spectral method to approximate the wave function. Lastly, we carry out extensive numerical experiments to verify the existence and property results of the ground states, confirm the spatial spectral accuracy by traversing the most commonly-used initial guesses for each component thanks to its great efficiency, which is also attributed to a utilization of cascadic multigrid and discrete Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). Moreover, we investigate the effects of local interaction, rotation and spin-orbit coupling and external trapping potential on the ground state, and unveil some interesting physical phenomena, such as giant vortex and U-shape vortex line.

Ground States and Dynamics of Spin-Orbit-Coupled Bose--Einstein Condensates

Weizhu Bao, Yongyong Cai

We study analytically and asymptotically, as well as numerically, ground states and dynamics of two-component spin-orbit-coupled Bose--Einstein condensates (BECs) modeled by the coupled Gross--Pitaevskii equations (CGPEs). In fact, due to the appearance of the spin-orbit (SO) coupling in the two-component BEC with a Raman coupling, the ground state structures and dynamical properties become very rich and complicated. For the ground states, we establish existence and nonexistence results under different parameter regimes and obtain their limiting behaviors and/or structures with different combinations of the SO and Raman coupling strengths. For the dynamics, we show that the motion of the center-of-mass is either nonperiodic or with different frequency than the trapping frequency when the external trapping potential is taken as harmonic and/or the initial data is chosen as a stationary state (e.g., ground state) with a shift, which is completely different from the case of a two-component BEC without the SO coupling, and obtain the semiclassical limit of the CGPEs in the linear case via the Wigner transform method. Efficient and accurate numerical methods are proposed for computing the ground states and dynamics, especially for the case of box potentials. Numerical results are reported to demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the numerical methods and show the rich phenomenon in the SO-coupled BECs.

Ground, Symmetric and Central Vortex States in Rotating Bose-Einstein Condensates

Weizhu Bao, Peter A. Markowich, Hanquan Wang

We study ground, symmetric and central vortex states, as well as their energy and chemical potential diagrams, in rotating Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) analytically and numerically. We start from the three-dimensional (3D) Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) with an angular momentum rotation term, scale it to obtain a four-parameter model, reduce it to a 2D GPE in the limiting regime of strong anisotropic confinement and present its semiclassical scaling and geometrical optics. We discuss the existence/nonexistence problem for ground states (depending on the angular velocity) and find that symmetric and central vortex states are independent of the angular rotational momentum. We perform numerical experiments computing these states using a continuous normalized gradient flow (CNGF) method with a backward Euler finite difference (BEFD) discretization.Ground, symmetric and central vortex states, as well as their energy configurations, are reported in 2D and 3D for a rotating BEC.Through our numerical study, we find various configurations with several vortices in both 2D and 3D structures, energy asymptotics in some limiting regimes and ratios between energies of different states in a strong replusive interaction regime. Finally we report the critical angular velocity at which the ground state loses symmetry, numerical verification of dimension reduction from 3D to 2D, errors for the Thomas-Fermi approximation, and spourous numerical ground states when the rotation speed is larger than the minimal trapping frequency in the xy plane.

An efficient spectral method for computing dynamics of rotating two-component Bose--Einstein condensates via coordinate transformation

Ming Ju, Qinglin Tang, Yanzhi Zhang

In this paper, we propose an efficient and accurate numerical method for computing the dynamics of rotating two-component Bose--Einstein condensates (BECs) which is described by coupled Gross--Pitaevskii equations (CGPEs) with an angular momentum rotation term and an external driving field. By introducing rotating Lagrangian coordinates, we eliminate the angular momentum rotation term from the CGPEs, which allows us to develop an efficient numerical method. Our method has spectral accuracy in all spatial dimensions and moreover it can be easily implemented in practice. To examine its performance, we compare our method with those reported in literature. Numerical results show that to achieve the same accuracy, our method needs much shorter computing time. We also applied our method to study the dynamic properties of rotating two-component BECs. Furthermore, we generalize our method to solve the vector Gross--Pitaevskii equations (VGPEs) which is used to study rotating multi-component BECs.

Numerical Simulations on Ground States for Rotating Two-Component Bose-Einstein Condensates

The ground states of rotating two-component Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) at extremely low temperature are solutions of time-independent coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations. To compute the ground states, we propose an efficient numerical method—gradient flows with discrete nor-malization. In linear cases and under properly chosen initial data, we can prove that the gradient flows converge into the ground state which has the lowest energy. We show that the method is quite efficient and apply the method to study complicated vortex structure in the ground state solutions of rotating two-component BEC at extremely low temperature.
