GROUND STATES AND DYNAMICS OF SPIN-ORBIT-COUPLED

Abstract

We study analytically and asymptotically as well as numerically ground states and dynamics of two-component spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) modeled by the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations (CGPEs). In fact, due to the appearance of the spin-orbit (SO) coupling in the two-component BEC with a Raman coupling, the ground state structures and dynam- ical properties become very rich and complicated. For the ground states, we establish the existence and non-existence results under different parameter regimes, and obtain their limiting behaviors and/or structures with different combinations of the SO and Raman coupling strengths. For the dynamics, we show that the motion of the center-of-mass is either non-periodic or with different frequency to the trapping frequency when the external trapping potential is taken as harmonic and the initial data is chosen as a stationary state (e.g. ground state) with a shift, which is completely different from the case of a two-component BEC without the SO coupling, and obtain the semiclas- sical limit of the CGPEs in the linear case via the Wigner transform method. Efficient and accurate numerical methods are proposed for computing the ground states and dynamics, especially for the case of box potentials. Numerical results are reported to demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the numerical methods and show the rich phenomenon in the SO-coupled BECs.

Mathematical Models and Numerical Methods for Spinor Bose-Einstein Condensates.

Weizhu Bao null, Yongyong Cai

In this paper, we systematically review mathematical models, theories and numerical methods for ground states and dynamics of spinor Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) based on the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations (GPEs). We start with a pseudo spin-1/2 BEC system with/without an internal atomic Josephson junction and spin-orbit coupling including (i) existence and uniqueness as well as non-existence of ground states under different parameter regimes, (ii) ground state structures under different limiting parameter regimes, (iii) dynamical properties, and (iv) efficient and accurate numerical methods for computing ground states and dynamics. Then we extend these results to spin-1 BEC and spin-2 BEC. Finally, extensions to dipolar spinor systems and/or general spin-F (F>=3) BEC are discussed.

Mathematical and numerical study on the ground states of rotating spin-orbit coupled spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates

Jing Wang, Wei Yang, Yongjun Yuan +1 more

In this article, we study mathematically and numerically the ground states of three-component rotating spin-orbit coupled (SOC) spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates modeled by the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations (CGPEs). Firstly, we rigorously prove existence result of the ground state and derive some analytical properties, including the virial identity and negativity of SOC energy. Secondly, we propose an efficient and accurate preconditioned nonlinear conjugate gradient (PCG) algorithm to compute the ground states. We truncate the whole space into a bounded rectangular domain and readily apply the Fourier spectral method to approximate the wave function. The PCG method is successfully adapted with appropriate modifications to the adaptive step size control strategy for the one-parameter energy minimization problem and to the choice of preconditioners, achieving great performance in terms of accuracy and efficiency. Lastly, we carry out extensive numerical experiments to verify the existence and property results of the ground states, confirm the spatial spectral accuracy by traversing the most commonly-used initial guesses for each component thanks to its great efficiency, which is also attributed to a utilization of cascadic multigrid and discrete Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). Moreover, we investigate the effects of local interaction, rotation and spin-orbit coupling and external trapping potential on the ground state, and unveil some interesting physical phenomena, such as giant vortex and U-shape vortex line.

Spin-Orbit Coupled Dynamics of Ferromagnetic Spinor Bose-Einstein Condensate

Qiang Zhao

In this paper, we investigate the dynamic properties of spin–orbit coupling spin-1 ferromagnetic Bose–Einstein condensates with different trap geometry. Our results are obtained in terms of the three-component Gross–Pitaevskii equation of mean-field theory. Two kinds of trap potential are discussed: isotropic and anisotropic. It is shown that the spin-exchange dynamics are greatly influenced by trap geometry. For the latter with weak spin–orbit coupling strength, we find that the three-component oscillation accelerates and some small difference emerges between component m=1 and m=-1. With the increase in spin–orbit coupling strength, the three components reach almost the same population. In addition, the kinetic energy of the system changes within a small scope for strong spin–orbit coupling, as opposed to a constant value in an isotropic trap. The density distributions display that the stripe phase appears with the increase in spin–orbit coupling strength. The method of generating stripe structure is different from the ground state of ferromagnetic condensate. For isotropic trap, the spatial separation of top and bottom spin–orbit condensates in component m=1 and m=-1 occurs at weak spin–orbit coupling, and square lattice appears at strong spin–orbit coupling.

Dynamics of spin-tensor-momentum coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

Xu Qiu, Lin-Xue Wang, Guangping Chen +2 more

We investigate the dynamics of the plane wave state in one-dimensional spin-tensor-momentum coupled Bose-Einstein condensate. By using the Gaussian variational approximation, we first derive the equations of motion for the variational parameters, including the center-of-mass coordinate, momentum, amplitude, width, chirp, and relative phase. These variational parameters are coupled together nonlinearly by the spin-tensor-momentum coupling, Raman coupling, and the spin-dependent atomic interaction. By minimizing the energy with respect to the variational parameters, we find that the ground state is a biaxial nematic state, the momentum of the ground state decreases monotonically with the increase of the strength of the Raman coupling, and the parity of real part of the ground-state wave function is opposite to that of the imaginary part. The linear stability analysis shows that the ground state is dynamically stable under a perturbation, and exhibits three different oscillation excitation modes, the frequencies of which are related to the strength of the Raman coupling, the aspect ratio of the harmonic trap, and the strength of the atomic interaction. By solving the equations of motion for the variational parameters, we find that the system displays periodical oscillation in the dynamical evolution. These variational results are also confirmed by the direct numerical simulations of the Gross-Pitaevskii equations, and these findings reveal the unique properties given by the spin-tensor-momentum coupling.
