Boundary Entropy Can Increase Under Bulk RG Flow

Abstract

The boundary entropy log(g) of a critical one-dimensional quantum system (or two-dimensional conformal field theory) is known to decrease under renormalization group (RG) flow of the boundary theory. We study instead the behavior of the boundary entropy as the bulk theory flows between two nearby critical points. We use conformal perturbation theory to calculate the change in g due to a slightly relevant bulk perturbation and find that it has no preferred sign. The boundary entropy log(g) can therefore increase during appropriate bulk flows. This is demonstrated explicitly in flows between minimal models. We discuss the applications of this result to D-branes in string theory and to impurity problems in condensed matter.

Boundary entropy under ambient RG flow in the AdS/BCFT model

Yoshiki Sato

We discuss the change of the boundary entropy under an ambient renormalization group flow. We use conformal perturbation theory to calculate the change of the boundary entropy for $d$-dimensional BCFTs between two nearby fixed points. We also use the ${\mathrm{AdS}}_{d+1}/{\mathrm{BCFT}}_{d}$ model to calculate the boundary entropy. We show that the boundary entropy can increase under the ambient renormalization group flow both in conformal perturbation theory and the ${\mathrm{AdS}}_{d+1}/{\mathrm{BCFT}}_{d}$ model. In a special case, the change of the boundary entropy in the ${\mathrm{AdS}}_{d+1}/{\mathrm{BCFT}}_{d}$ model reduces to that of the conformal perturbation theory.

The g-theorem and quantum information theory

Horacio Casini, Ignacio Salazar Landea, Gonzalo Torroba

We study boundary renormalization group flows between boundary conformal field theories in 1 + 1 dimensions using methods of quantum information theory. We define an entropic g-function for theories with impurities in terms of the relative entanglement entropy, and we prove that this g-function decreases along boundary renormalization group flows. This entropic g-theorem is valid at zero temperature, and is independent from the g-theorem based on the thermal partition function. We also discuss the mutual information in boundary RG flows, and how it encodes the correlations between the impurity and bulk degrees of freedom. Our results provide a quantum-information understanding of (boundary) RG flow as increase of distinguishability between the UV fixed point and the theory along the RG flow.

Entropy of conformal perturbation defects

We consider perturbation defects obtained by perturbing a 2D conformal field theory (CFT) by a relevant operator on a half-plane.If the perturbed bulk theory flows to an infrared fixed point described by another CFT, the defect flows to a conformal defect between the ultraviolet and infrared fixed point CFTs.For short bulk renormalization group flows connecting two fixed points which are close in theory space we find a universal perturbative formula for the boundary entropy of the corresponding conformal perturbation defect. We compare the value of the boundary entropy that our formula gives for the flows between nearby Virasoro minimal models  m with the boundary entropy of the defect constructed by Gaiotto (2012 J. Entanglement entropy and boundary renormalization group flow: Exact results in the Ising universality class

Eyal Cornfeld, Eran Sela

The entanglement entropy in one-dimensional critical systems with boundaries has been associated with the noninteger ground-state degeneracy. This quantity, being a characteristic of boundary fixed points, decreases under renormalization group flow, as predicted by the g theorem. Here, using conformal field theory methods, we exactly calculate the entanglement entropy in the boundary Ising universality class. Our expression can be separated into the well-known bulk term and a boundary entanglement term, displaying a universal flow between two boundary conditions, in accordance with the g theorem. These results are obtained within the replica trick approach, where we show that the associated twist field, a central object generating the geometry of an $n$-sheeted Riemann surface, can be bosonized, giving simple analytic access to multiple quantities of interest. We argue that our result applies to other models falling into the same universality class. This includes the vicinity of the quantum critical point of the two-channel Kondo model, allowing one to track in real space the presence of a region containing one-half of a qubit with entropy $\frac{1}{2}log(2)$, associated with a free local Majorana fermion.

Boundary renormalization group flow of entanglement entropy at a ( 2 + 1 )-dimensional quantum critical point

Zhiyan Wang, Zhe Wang, Yi-Ming Ding +3 more

We investigate the second-order Rényi entanglement entropy at the quantum critical point of a spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a columnar dimerized square lattice. The universal constant $γ$ in the area-law scaling $S_{2}(\ell) = α\ell - γ$ is found to be sensitive to the entangling surface configurations, with $γ_{\text{sp}} > 0$ for strong-bond-cut (special) surfaces and $γ_{\text{ord}} < 0$ for weak-bond-cut (ordinary) surfaces, which is attributed to the distinct conformal boundary conditions. Introducing boundary dimerization drives a renormalization group (RG) flow from the special to the ordinary boundary criticality, and the constant $γ$ decreases monotonically with increasing dimerization strength, demonstrating irreversible evolution under the boundary RG flow. These results provide numerical evidence for a higher-dimensional analog of the $g$ theorem, and suggest $γ$ as a possible characteristic function for boundary RG flow in $(2+1)$-dimensional conformal field theory.

We discuss the change of the boundary entropy under an ambient renormalization group flow.
