Abstract

We investigate the second-order Rényi entanglement entropy at the quantum critical point of a spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a columnar dimerized square lattice. The universal constant $γ$ in the area-law scaling $S_{2}(\ell) = α\ell - γ$ is found to be sensitive to the entangling surface configurations, with $γ_{\text{sp}} > 0$ for strong-bond-cut (special) surfaces and $γ_{\text{ord}} < 0$ for weak-bond-cut (ordinary) surfaces, which is attributed to the distinct conformal boundary conditions. Introducing boundary dimerization drives a renormalization group (RG) flow from the special to the ordinary boundary criticality, and the constant $γ$ decreases monotonically with increasing dimerization strength, demonstrating irreversible evolution under the boundary RG flow. These results provide numerical evidence for a higher-dimensional analog of the $g$ theorem, and suggest $γ$ as a possible characteristic function for boundary RG flow in $(2+1)$-dimensional conformal field theory.

Channeling Quantum Criticality

Yijian Zou, Shengqi Sang, Timothy H. Hsieh

We analyze the effect of decoherence, modeled by local quantum channels, on quantum critical states and we find universal properties of the resulting mixed state's entanglement, both between system and environment and within the system. Renyi entropies exhibit volume law scaling with a subleading constant governed by a "g function" in conformal field theory, allowing us to define a notion of renormalization group (RG) flow (or "phase transitions") between quantum channels. We also find that the entropy of a subsystem in the decohered state has a subleading logarithmic scaling with subsystem size, and we relate it to correlation functions of boundary condition changing operators in the conformal field theory. Finally, we find that the subsystem entanglement negativity, a measure of quantum correlations within mixed states, can exhibit log scaling or area law based on the RG flow. When the channel corresponds to a marginal perturbation, the coefficient of the log scaling can change continuously with decoherence strength. We illustrate all these possibilities for the critical ground state of the transverse-field Ising model, in which we identify four RG fixed points of dephasing channels and verify the RG flow numerically. Our results are relevant to quantum critical states realized on noisy quantum simulators, in which our predicted entanglement scaling can be probed via shadow tomography methods.

Criticality on Rényi Defects at (2+1)$D$ O(3) Quantum Critical Points

Yanzhang Zhu, Zhe Wang, Meng Cheng +1 more

At a quantum critical point, the universal scaling behavior of Rényi entanglement entropy is controlled by the universality class of the codimension-two Rényi (or conical) defects in the infrared theory. In this work we perform a systematic study of critical correlations along Rényi defect lines in (2+1)$D$ quantum spin models realizing quantum phase transitions described by the O(3) Wilson-Fisher universality class, using large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We present numerical evidence that, for a fixed Rényi index $n$, there exist multiple Rényi defect universality classes, with distinct critical exponents for the O(3) order parameter on the defect. These universality classes are realized by choosing microscopically different entanglement cuts in lattice models, which we classify as ordinary, special and extraordinary according to their relation to surface criticality. For the extraordinary entanglement cut, we further find evidence for a phase transition on the defect as a function of the Rényi index. Our results highlight the key role of defect universality classes in determining the universal scaling of Rényi entropy, and provide a framework for understanding the previously observed dependence of Rényi entropy scaling on microscopic lattice details.

Effects of non-conformal boundary on entanglement entropy

Andrew Loveridge

Abstract Spacetime boundaries with canonical Neuman or Dirichlet conditions preserve conformal invarience, but “mixed” boundary conditions which interpolate linearly between them can break conformal symmetry and generate interesting Renormalization Group flows even when a theory is free, providing soluble models with nontrivial scale dependence. We compute the (Rindler) entanglement entropy for a free scalar field with mixed boundary conditions in half Minkowski space and in Anti-de Sitter space. In the latter case we also compute an additional geometric contribution, which according to a recent proposal then collectively give the 1/N corrections to the entanglement entropy of the conformal field theory dual. We obtain some perturbatively exact results in both cases which illustrate monotonic interpolation between ultraviolet and infrared fixed points. This is consistent with recent work on the irreversibility of renormalization group, allowing some assessment of the aforementioned proposal for holographic entanglement entropy and illustrating the generalization of the g-theorem for boundary conformal field theory.

Entanglement Entropy and Deconfined Criticality: Emergent SO(5) Symmetry and Proper Lattice Bipartition

Jonathan D’Emidio, Anders W. Sandvik

We study the Rényi entanglement entropy (EE) of the two-dimensional J-Q model, the emblematic quantum spin model of deconfined criticality at the phase transition between antiferromagnetic and valence-bond-solid ground states. State-of-the-art quantum Monte Carlo calculations of the EE reveal critical corner contributions that scale logarithmically with the system size, with a coefficient in remarkable agreement with the form expected from a large-N conformal field theory with SO(N=5) symmetry. However, details of the bipartition of the lattice are crucial in order to observe this behavior. If the subsystem for the reduced density matrix does not properly accommodate valence-bond fluctuations, logarithmic contributions appear even for cornerless bipartitions. We here use a 45° tilted cut on the square lattice. Beyond supporting an SO(5) deconfined quantum critical point, our results for both the regular and tilted cuts demonstrate important microscopic aspects of the EE that are not captured by conformal field theory.

Boundary conditions for the entanglement cut in two-dimensional conformal field theories

Ananda Roy, Sergei L. Lukyanov, Hubert Saleur

The entanglement spectra for a subsystem in a spin chain fine-tuned to a quantum-critical point contains signatures of the underlying quantum field theory that governs its low-energy properties. For an open chain with given boundary conditions described by a 2D conformal field theory~(CFT), the entanglement spectrum of the left/right half of the system coincides with a boundary CFT spectrum, where one of the boundary conditions arise due to the `entanglement cut'. The latter has been argued to be conformal and has been numerically found to be the `free' boundary condition for Ising, Potts and free boson theories. For these models, the `free' boundary condition for the lattice degree of freedom has a counterpart in the continuum theory. However, this is not true in general. Here, this question is analyzed for the unitary minimal models of 2D CFTs using the density matrix renormalization group technique. The entanglement spectra are computed for blocks of spins in open chains of A-type restricted solid-on-solid models with identical boundary conditions at the ends. The imposed boundary conditions are realized exactly for these lattice models due to their integrable nature. The obtained entanglement spectra are in good agreement with certain boundary CFT spectra. The boundary condition for the entanglement cut is found to be conformal and to coincide with the one with the highest boundary entropy. This identification enables determination of the exponents governing the unusual corrections to the entanglement entropy from the CFT partition functions. These are compared with numerical results.

Entanglement entropy of (2+1) -dimensional quantum critical points with quenched disorder: Dimensional reduction approach

Qicheng Tang, W. Zhu

A formidable perspective in understanding quantum criticality of a given many-body system is through its entanglement contents. Until now, most progress are only limited to the disorder-free case. Here, we develop an efficient scheme to compute the entanglement entropy of $(2+1)$-dimensional quantum critical points with randomness, from a conceptual angle where the quenched disorder can be considered as dimensionally reducible interactions. As a concrete example, we reveal novel entanglement signatures of $(2+1)$-dimensional Dirac fermion exposed to a random magnetic field, which hosts a class of emergent disordered quantum critical points. We demonstrate that the entanglement entropy satisfies the area-law scaling, and observe a modification of the area-law coefficient that points to the emergent disordered quantum criticality. Moreover, we also obtain the subleading correction to the entanglement entropy due to a finite correlation length. This subleading correction is found to be a universal function of the correlation length and disorder strength. We discuss its connection to the renormalization group flows of underlying theories.
