Abstract

© The Author(s) 2024. We present an operationally motivated treatment of quantum reference frames in the setting that the frame is a covariant positive operator valued measure (POVM) on a finite homogeneous space, generalising the principal homogeneous spaces studied in previous work. We focus on the case that the reference observable is the canonical covariant projection valued measure on the given space, and show that this gives rise to a rank-one covariant POVM on the group, which can be seen as a system of coherent states.

Quantum Reference Frames on Homogeneous Spaces

Jan Głowacki

This paper initiates a systematic study of operators arising as integrals of operator-valued functions with respect to positive operator-valued measures and utilizes these tools to provide relativization maps (Yen) for quantum reference frames (QRFs) defined on general homogeneous spaces. Properties of operator-valued integration are first studied and then employed to define general relativization maps and show their properties. The relativization maps presented here are defined for QRFs (systems of covariance) based on arbitrary homogeneous spaces of locally compact second countable topological groups and are shown to be contracting quantum channels, injective for localizable (norm-1 property) frames and multiplicative for the sharp ones (PVMs), extending the existing results.

Operational Quantum Frames: An operational approach to quantum reference frames

Jan Głowacki

The quantum reference frames program is based on the idea that reference frames should be treated as quantum physical systems. In this work, we combine these insights with the emphasis on operationality, understood as refraining from introducing into the framework objects not directly related to in principle verifiable probabilities of measurement outcomes, and identifying the setups indistinguishable as such. Based on intuitions from special relativity and gauge theory, we introduce an operational notion of a quantum reference frame -- which is defined as a quantum system equipped with a covariant positive operator-valued measure (POVM) -- and build a framework on the concept of operational equivalence that allows us to enforce operationality by quotienting the quantum state spaces with equivalence relation of indistinguishability by the available effects, assumed to be invariant under gauge transformations, and framed in the sense of respecting the choice of the frame's POVM. Such effects are accessed via the yen construction, which maps effects on the system to those on the composite system, satisfying gauge invariance and framing. They are called relative, and the classes of states indistinguishable by them are referred to as relative states. We show that when the frame is localizable, meaning that it allows for states that give rise to a highly localized probability distribution of the frame's observable, by restricting the relative description upon such localized frame preparation we recover the usual, non-relational formalism of quantum mechanics. We provide a consistent way of translating between different relative descriptions by means of frame-change maps and compare these with the corresponding notions in other approaches to QRF, establishing an operational agreement in the domain of common applicability.

Interacting quantum reference frames

Leonardo Chataignier, Alexander R. H. Smith

We formulate quantum reference frames within the Dirac quantization of gauge theories, where physical states are obtained from a kinematical Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}_{\rm kin}$ by group averaging. We assume the gauge group $G$ is unimodular, and we define a quantum reference frame as a system of coherent states associated with a group $G_R$ of frame orientations acting on a tensor factor of $\mathcal{H}_{\rm kin}$. In direct analogy with the Faddeev-Popov procedure in path integrals, we show that the physical inner product can be written in terms of a choice of frame orientation with an appropriate operator measure, but that the physical Hilbert space is independent of this choice of frame. This yields a generalization of the Page-Wootters reduction map used to define conditional states and conditional probabilities of measurement outcomes given a frame orientation. These probabilities correspond to the expectation values of relational Dirac observables obtained from generalizations of previously considered relativization maps. Our main result is that the map that implements a change of frame is unitary, even when $G$ does not act as a tensor-product representation across a factorization of $\mathcal{H}_{\rm kin}$. The formalism therefore accommodates interactions between reference frames and the systems described relative to them. We apply this formalism to temporal frames, showing that a unitary Schrödinger equation emerges for an interacting clock and system, and that a previously reported time-nonlocal Schrödinger equation is recovered in an appropriate limit. With this, problems of non-unitarity are avoided by the use of the gauge-fixing measure in the physical inner product. We also discuss the case of interacting spatial frames, where the known correspondence between coherence in one frame and entanglement in another is shown to depend on the coupling.

Relational observables in group field theory

Luca Marchetti, Edward Wilson-Ewing

Abstract We construct relational observables in group field theory (GFT) in terms of covariant positive operator-valued measures (POVMs), using techniques developed in the context of quantum reference frames (QRFs). We focus on matter QRFs; this can be generalized to other types of frames within the same POVM-based framework. The resulting family of relational observables provides a covariant framework to extract localized observables from GFT, which is typically defined in a perspective-neutral way. Then, we compare this formalism with previous proposals for relational observables in GFT. We find that our QRF-based relational observables overcome the intrinsic limitations of previous proposals while reproducing the same continuum limit results concerning expectation values of the number and volume operators on coherent states. Nonetheless, there can be important differences for more complex operators, as well as for other types of GFT states. Finally, we also use a specific class of POVMs to show how to project states and operators from the more general perspective-neutral GFT Fock space to a perspective-dependent one where a scalar matter field plays the role of a relational clock.

Frame-dependent coherence of a quantum state

Nicolae Cotfas

The tight frames can be regarded as a particular case of POVMs (positive operator-valued measures describing generalized measurements), namely the case when all the operators are rank-one. Each orthonormal basis is a tight frame, and every tight frame, after the embedding into a higher-dimensional space, is the orthogonal projection of an orthonormal basis. There exist several POVM-based definitions of coherence, and they are well-investigated. Our aim is to identify properties specific to the particular case of tight frames, and to look for some applications. All the POVM-based definitions use a Naimark extension. The frame-dependent coherence can be regarded as a particular case of POVM-based coherence, but it can be defined directly, without to use a Naimark extension. Its definition is a direct generalization of the basis-dependent ℓ 1 -norm of coherence, and it offers a more accurate description because we can use a frame containing several orthogonal bases. A quasi frame-independent definition of coherence for qubit systems is presented.
