Abstract

We consider the nonclassicality distance indicator of a state in finite-dimensional quantum systems which is evaluating a state nonclassicality by its remoteness from the set of “classical states”. The latter are identified with those states whose Wigner function is non-negative. The corresponding Wigner function’s positivity polytope in the simplex of qudit eigenvalues is introduced and the representation for the nonclassicality distance indicator as a piecewise function is derived. The results are exemplified by the qutrit case.

On the hierarchy of classicality and symmetry of quantum states

A. Khvedelidze, Astghik Torosyan

The interrelation between classicality/quantumness and symmetry of states is discussed within the phase-space formulation of finite-dimensional quantum systems. We derive representations for classicality measures $\mathcal{Q}_N[H_{\varrho}]$ of states from the stratum of given symmetry type $[H_{\varrho}]$ for the Hilbert-Schmidt ensemble of qudits. The expressions for measures are given in terms of the permanents of matrices constructed from the vertices of the special Wigner function's positivity polytope. The supposition about the partial order of classicality indicators $\mathcal{Q}_N[H_{\varrho}]$ in accordance with the symmetry type of stratum is formulated.

Verifying nonclassicality beyond negativity in phase space

Jiyong Park, Jaehak Lee, Hyunchul Nha

We propose a hierachy of nonclassicality criteria in phase space. Our formalism covers the negativity in phase space as a special case and further adresses nonclassicality for quantum states with positive phase-space distributions. Remarkably, it enables us to detect every nonclassical Gaussian state and every finite dimensional state in Fock basis by looking into only three phase-space points. Furthermore, our approach provides an experimentally accessible lower bound for the nonclassicality measure based on trace distance. We also extend our method to detecting genuine quantum non-Gaussianity of a state with a non-negative Wigner function. We finally establish our formalism by employing generalized quasiprobability distributions to demonstrate its power for a practical test using an on-off detector array.

Nonclassicality indicator for the real phase-space distribution functions

Parvin Sadeghi, Siamak Khademi, S. Nasiri

Benedict et al. and Kenfack et al. advocated nonclassicality indicators based on the measurement of negativity of the Wigner distribution functions. These indicators have some applications in quantum mechanics and quantum optics. In this paper we define a nonclassicality indicator in terms of the interference in phase space, which is applicable to some real distribution functions including those of Wigner. As a special case one may reproduce the previous results using our indicator for the Wigner distribution functions. This indicator is examined for cases of the Schr\"odinger cat state and the thermal states and the results are compared with those obtained by previous methods. It seems that the physical behavior of nonclassicality indicators originates in the uncertainty principle. This is shown by an onto correspondence between these indicators and the uncertainty principle.

On Measures of Classicality/Quantumness in Quasiprobability Representations of Finite-Dimensional Quantum Systems

N. Abbasli, V. Abgaryan, M. Bures +3 more

Abstract In the present report we discuss measures of classicality/quantumness of states of finite-dimensional quantum systems, which are based on a deviation of quasiprobability distributions from true statistical distributions. Particularly, the dependence of the global indicator of classicality on the assigned geometry of a quantum state space is analysed for a whole family of Wigner quasiprobability representations. General considerations are exemplified by constructing the global indicator of classicality/quantumness for the Hilbert–Schmidt, Bures and Bogoliubov–Kubo–Mori ensembles of qubits and qutrits.

Polytopes of Absolutely Wigner Bounded Spin States

Jérôme Denis, J. Davis, Robert B. Mann +1 more

Quasiprobability has become an increasingly popular notion for characterising non-classicality in quantum information, thermodynamics, and metrology. Two important distributions with non-positive quasiprobability are the Wigner function and the Glauber-Sudarshan function. Here we study properties of the spin Wigner function for finite-dimensional quantum systems and draw comparisons with its infinite-dimensional analog, focusing in particular on the relation to the Glauber-Sudarshan function and the existence of absolutely Wigner-bounded states. More precisely, we investigate unitary orbits of mixed spin states that are characterized by Wigner functions lower-bounded by a specified value. To this end, we extend a characterization of the set of absolutely Wigner positive states as a set of linear eigenvalue constraints, which together define a polytope centred on the maximally mixed state in the simplex of spin- j states. The lower bound determines the relative size of such absolutely Wigner bounded (AWB) polytopes and we study their geometric characteristics. In each dimension a Hilbert-Schmidt ball representing a tight purity-based sufficient condition to be AWB is exactly determined, while another ball representing a necessary condition to be AWB is conjectured. Special attention is given to the case where the polytope separates orbits containing only positive Wigner functions from other orbits because of the use of Wigner negativity as a witness of non-classicality. Comparisons are made to absolute symmetric state separability and spin Glauber-Sudarshan positivity, with additional details given for low spin quantum numbers.
