Abstract

Quasiprobability has become an increasingly popular notion for characterising non-classicality in quantum information, thermodynamics, and metrology. Two important distributions with non-positive quasiprobability are the Wigner function and the Glauber-Sudarshan function. Here we study properties of the spin Wigner function for finite-dimensional quantum systems and draw comparisons with its infinite-dimensional analog, focusing in particular on the relation to the Glauber-Sudarshan function and the existence of absolutely Wigner-bounded states. More precisely, we investigate unitary orbits of mixed spin states that are characterized by Wigner functions lower-bounded by a specified value. To this end, we extend a characterization of the set of absolutely Wigner positive states as a set of linear eigenvalue constraints, which together define a polytope centred on the maximally mixed state in the simplex of spin- j states. The lower bound determines the relative size of such absolutely Wigner bounded (AWB) polytopes and we study their geometric characteristics. In each dimension a Hilbert-Schmidt ball representing a tight purity-based sufficient condition to be AWB is exactly determined, while another ball representing a necessary condition to be AWB is conjectured. Special attention is given to the case where the polytope separates orbits containing only positive Wigner functions from other orbits because of the use of Wigner negativity as a witness of non-classicality. Comparisons are made to absolute symmetric state separability and spin Glauber-Sudarshan positivity, with additional details given for low spin quantum numbers.

Basis-independent stabilizerness and maximally noisy magic states

Michael Zurel, Jack Davis

Absolutely stabilizer states are those that remain convex mixtures of stabilizer states after conjugation by any unitary. Here we give a characterization of such states for multiple qudits of all prime dimensions by introducing a polytope of their allowed spectra. We illustrate this through the examples of one qubit, two qubits, and one qutrit. In particular, the set of absolutely stabilizer states for a single qubit is a ball inscribed in the stabilizer octahedron, but for higher dimensions the geometry is more complicated. For odd-prime-dimensional qudits, we also give a complete characterization of absolutely Wigner-positive states, i.e., states whose Wigner function remains nonnegative after conjugation by any unitary. In so doing, we show there are absolutely Wigner-positive states that are not absolutely stabilizer, which can be seen as a unitarily invariant version of bound magic. We then study the radii of the largest balls contained in the sets of absolutely stabilizer states and absolutely Wigner-positive states. These radii respectively tell us the lowest possible purity of nonstabilizer and Wigner-negative states. Conversely, we also find the radius of the smallest ball containing the set of absolutely Wigner-positive states, giving a tight purity-based necessary condition thereof. Finally, we apply our methods to magic witnessing and find simple sufficient conditions for determining if an $n$-qubit state is reducible to an $m$-qubit magic state for any $m<n$.

Characterising the sets of quantum states with non-negative Wigner function

Nicolas J. Cerf, Ulysse Chabaud, Jack Davis +3 more

For Hilbert spaces $\mathcal H\subseteq L^2(\mathbb R)$ we consider the convex sets $\mathcal D_+(\mathcal H)$ of Wigner-positive states (WPS), i.e.~density matrices over $\mathcal H$ with non-negative Wigner function. We investigate the topological structure of these sets, namely concerning closure, compactness, interior and boundary (in a relative topology induced by the trace norm). We also study their geometric structure and construct minimal sets of states that generate $\mathcal D_+(\mathcal H)$ through convex combinations. If $\mathcal H$ is finite-dimensional, the existence of such sets follows from a central result in convex analysis, namely the Krein-Milman theorem. In the infinite-dimensional case $\mathcal H=L^2(\mathbb R)$ this is not so, due to lack of compactness of the set $\mathcal D_+(\mathcal H)$. Nevertheless, we prove that a Krein-Milman theorem holds in this case, which allows us to extend most of the results concerning the sets of generators to the infinite-dimensional setting. Finally, we study the relation between the finite and infinite-dimensional sets of WPS, and prove that the former provide a hierarchy of closed subsets, which are also proper faces of the latter. These results provide a basis for an operational characterisation of the extreme points of the sets of WPS, which we undertake in a companion paper. Our work offers a unified perspective on the topological and geometric properties of the sets of WPS in finite and infinite dimensions, along with explicit constructions of minimal sets of generators.

Absolutely classical spin states

Fabian Bohnet-Waldraff, O. Giraud, Daniel Braun

We introduce the concept of ``absolutely classical'' spin states, in analogy to absolutely separable states of bipartite quantum systems. Absolutely classical states are states that remain classical (i.e., a convex sum of projectors on coherent states of a spin $j$) under any unitary transformation applied to them. We investigate the maximal size of the ball of absolutely classical states centered on the maximally mixed state and derive a lower bound for its radius as a function of the total spin quantum number. We also obtain a numerical estimate of this maximal radius and compare it to the case of absolutely separable states.

Absolute-separability witnesses for symmetric multiqubit states

Eduardo Serrano-Ensástiga, Jérôme Denis, John Martin

The persistent separability of certain quantum states, known as symmetric absolutely separable (SAS), under symmetry-preserving global unitary transformations is of key significance in the context of quantum resources for bosonic systems. In this paper, we develop criteria for detecting SAS states of any number of qubits. Our approach is based on the Glauber-Sudarshan $P$ representation for finite-dimensional quantum systems. We introduce three families of SAS witnesses, one linear and two nonlinear in the eigenvalues of the state, formulated respectively as an algebraic inequality or a quadratic optimization problem. These witnesses are capable of identifying more SAS states than previously known counterparts. We also explore the geometric properties of the subsets of SAS states detected by our witnesses, shedding light on their distinctions.

Upper bounds on the purity of Wigner positive quantum states that verify the Wigner entropy conjecture

Qipeng Qian, Christos Gagatsos

We present analytical results toward the Wigner entropy conjecture, which posits that among all physical Wigner non-negative states the Wigner entropy is minimized by pure Gaussian states for which it attains the value $1+\lnπ$. Working under a minimal set of constraints on the Wigner function, namely, non-negativity, normalization, and the pointwise bound $πW\le 1$, we construct an explicit hierarchy of lower bounds $B_n$ on $S[W]$ by combining a truncated series lower bound for $-\ln x$ with moment identities of the Wigner function. This yields closed-form sufficient conditions, expressed in terms of the state purity $μ:=\operatorname{Tr}(ρ^2)=2π\int dq\,dp\,W(q,p)^2$, ensuring $S[W]\ge 1+\lnπ$. In particular, we first prove that all physical Wigner-non-negative states with $μ\le 4-2\sqrt{3}$ satisfy the Wigner entropy conjecture. We further obtain a systematic purity-only relaxation of the hierarchy, whose limiting sufficient condition is $μ\le 2/e$. Finally, we show that the threshold $2/e$ is sharp under the relaxed constraints considered here, thereby identifying the need for additional quantum-realizability information in the remaining high-purity regime.

Simulation of quantum computation with magic states via Jordan-Wigner transformations

Michael Zurel, Lawrence Z. Cohen, Robert Raussendorf

Negativity in certain quasiprobability representations is a necessary condition for a quantum computational advantage. Here we define a quasiprobability representation exhibiting this property with respect to quantum computations in the magic state model. It is based on generalized Jordan-Wigner transformations, and it has a close connection to the probability representation of universal quantum computation based on the $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}$ polytopes. For each number of qubits, it defines a polytope contained in the $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}$ polytope with some shared vertices. It leads to an efficient classical simulation algorithm for magic state quantum circuits for which the input state is positively represented, and it outperforms previous representations in terms of the states that can be positively represented.
