Chain of interacting SU(2)4 anyons and quantum SU(2)k×SU(2)k doubles

Abstract

We consider a chain of SU(2) 4 anyons with transitions to a topologically ordered phase state. For half-integer and integer indices of the type of strongly correlated excitations, we find an effective low-energy Hamiltonian that is an analogue of the standard Heisenberg Hamiltonian for quantum magnets. We describe the properties of the Hilbert spaces of the system eigenstates. For the Drinfeld quantum SU(2)k×SU(2)k doubles, we use numerical computations to show that the largest eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix for graphs that are extended Dynkin diagrams coincide with the total quantum dimensions for the levels k = 2, 3, 4, 5. We also formulate a hypothesis about the reason for the universal behavior of the system in the long-wave limit.

A chain of strongly correlated SU(2)_4 anyons: Hamiltonian and Hilbert space of states

L. Martina, A. P. Protogenov, Валерий Альфонасович Вербус

One-dimensional lattice model of SU(2)_{4} anyons containing a transition into the topological ordered phase state is considered. An effective low-energy Hamiltonian is found for half-integer and integer indices of the type of strongly correlated non-Abelian anyons. The Hilbert state space properties in the considered modular tensor category are studied.

Phase diagrams and correlation exponents for quantum spin chains of arbitrary spin quantum number

Heinz J. Schulz

The low-temperature properties of the spin-S quantum spin chain are studied representing a spin-S operator as the sum of 2S spin-1/2 operators. The resulting system of 2S-coupled spin-1/2 systems is studied in the weak-coupling limit, using a continuum representation. It is shown that under scaling, the coupling becomes strong. Under the additional hypothesis (which is shown to be true for S=1) that strong coupling represents correctly the properties of the spin-S system, the following results are obtained: (i) there are, in general, two types of planar (massless) phases XY1 and XY2, separated by an Ising-like transition; (ii) for half-odd-integer S the exponent \ensuremath{\eta} governing the asymptotic power-law decay of transverse spin correlations takes the universal value \ensuremath{\eta}=1 at the boundary between XY1 and the adjacent uniaxial antiferromagnetic phase; (iii) for integer S there is an additional singlet phase between XY1 and the antiferromagnetic state, with \ensuremath{\eta}=(1/4) at the limit of XY1; (iv) a spin-Peierls instability only exists for half-odd-integer S; (v) a magnetic field along the z direction may lead to a transition from the singlet or antiferromagnetic state to a planar phase. Universal scaling relations between exponents for transverse and longitudinal correlations in the phases XY1 and XY2 and an explicit asymptotic expression for correlation functions are derived. Finally, implications of the present results for some generalizations of the spin chain problem are briefly discussed. The above points (ii) and (iii) confirm predictions by Haldane, which were derived using quite different methods.

Shadows of anyons and the entanglement structure of topological phases

Jutho Haegeman, Valentin Zauner-Stauber, Norbert Schuch +1 more

The low-temperature dynamics of quantum systems are dominated by the low-energy eigenstates. For two-dimensional systems in particular, exotic phenomena such as topological order and anyon excitations can emerge. While a complete low-energy description of strongly correlated systems is hard to obtain, essential information about the elementary excitations is encoded in the eigenvalue structure of the quantum transfer matrix. Here we study the transfer matrix of topological quantum systems using the tensor network formalism and demonstrate that topological quantum order requires a particular type of 'symmetry breaking' for the fixed point subspace. We also relate physical anyon excitations to domain-wall excitations at the level of the transfer matrix. This formalism enables us to determine the structure of the topological sectors in two-dimensional gapped phases very efficiently, therefore opening novel avenues for studying fundamental questions related to anyon condensation and confinement.

TheD(D3)-anyon chain: integrable boundary conditions and excitation spectra

Peter E. Finch, Holger Frahm

Chains of interacting non-Abelian anyons with local interactions invariant under the action of the Drinfeld double of the dihedral group D 3 are constructed. Formulated as a spin chain the Hamiltonians are generated from commuting transfer matrices of an integrable vertex model for periodic and braided as well as open boundaries. A different anyonic model with the same local Hamiltonian is obtained within the fusion path formulation. This model is shown to be related to an integrable fusion interaction round the face model. Bulk and surface properties of the anyon chain are computed from the Bethe equations for the spin chain. The low-energy effective theories and operator content of the models (in both the spin chain and fusion path formulation) are identified from analytical and numerical studies of the finite-size spectra. For all boundary conditions considered the continuum theory is found to be a product of two conformal field theories. Depending on the coupling constants the factors can be a Z 4 parafermion or a minimal model.

Ashkin–Teller universality in a quantum double model of Ising anyons

Charlotte Gils

We study a quantum double model whose degrees of freedom are Ising anyons. The terms of the Hamiltonian of this system give rise to a competition between single and double topologies. By studying the energy spectra of the Hamiltonian at different values of the coupling constants, we find extended gapless regions which include a large number of critical points described by conformal field theories with central charge c = 1. These theories are part of the orbifold of the bosonic theory compactified on a circle. We observe that the Hilbert space of our anyonic model can be associated with extended Dynkin diagrams of affine Lie algebras, which yields exact solutions at some critical points. In certain special regimes, our model corresponds to the Hamiltonian limit of the Ashkin–Teller model, and hence integrability over a wide range of coupling parameters is established.

Collective States of Interacting Anyons, Edge States, and the Nucleation of Topological Liquids

Charlotte Gils, Eddy Ardonne, Simon Trebst +3 more

Quantum mechanical systems, whose degrees of freedom are so-called su(2)k anyons, form a bridge between ordinary SU(2) quantum magnets (of arbitrary spin-S) and systems of interacting non-Abelian anyons. Anyonic spin-1/2 chains exhibit a topological protection mechanism that stabilizes their gapless ground states and which vanishes only in the limit (k-->infinity) of the ordinary spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain. For anyonic spin-1 chains the phase diagram closely mirrors the one of the biquadratic SU(2) spin-1 chain. Our results describe, at the same time, nucleation of different 2D topological quantum fluids within a "parent" non-Abelian quantum Hall state, arising from a macroscopic occupation with localized, interacting anyons. The edge states between the "nucleated" and the parent liquids are neutral, and correspond precisely to the gapless modes of the anyonic chains.
