Philosophy of Quantum Information and Entanglement

Alisa Bokulich, Gregg S. Jaeger

Recent work in quantum information science has produced a revolution in our understanding of quantum entanglement. Scientists now view entanglement as a physical resource with many important applications. These range from quantum computers, which would be able to compute exponentially faster than classical computers, to quantum cryptographic techniques, which could provide unbreakable codes for the transfer of secret information over public channels. These important advances in the study of quantum entanglement and information touch on deep foundational issues in both physics and philosophy. This interdisciplinary volume brings together fourteen of the world's leading physicists and philosophers of physics to address the most important developments and debates in this exciting area of research. It offers a broad spectrum of approaches to resolving deep foundational challenges - philosophical, mathematical, and physical - raised by quantum information, quantum processing, and entanglement. This book is ideal for historians, philosophers of science and physicists.

Work: Quantum Information and Computation

John P. Preskill

Information is something that can be encoded in the state of a physical system, and a computation is a task that can be performed with a physically realizable device. Therefore, since the physical world is fundamentally quantum mechanical, the foundations of information theory and computer science should be sought in quantum physics. In fact, quantum information has weird properties that contrast sharply with the familiar properties of classical information. A quantum computer -- a new type of machine that exploits the quantum properties of infomation -- could perform certain typ$s of calculations far more efficiently than any foreseeable classical computer. To build a functional quantum computer will be an enormous technical challenge. New methods for quantum error correction are being developed that can help to prevent a quantum computer from crashing.

Development of Quantum Logic and Its Theoretical Foundation

Bang-Hai Wang

The emergence of quantum information and quantum computing is the inevitable choice in the development of information science. Introduces the historical development of quantum logic, research and the theoretical foundation of quantum logic related to orthomodular lattice on the basis of the closed subspace of Hilbert space and several open issues. Based on the above content, introduces the enormous computing power source of quantum computing and looks forward to the possibility of a quantum logic research.
