Single flux quantum circuits using the residue number system

Qing Ke, M. J. Feldman

We have designed and developed superconducting single flux quantum (SFQ) digital signal processing circuits using the residue number system (RNS). RNS arithmetic is a complete alternative to binary arithmetic for performing digital computations, which appears to have many advantages for SFQ circuits. We present a scheme for performing all RNS arithmetic functions using Josephson shift registers alone, and suggest that this Is advantageous for high-temperature superconductor computational circuits. We have designed a one-decimal-digit adder, realized with Nb-based superconducting circuitry. Its most complex component, the mod5 adder, has been simulated to show perfect functionality and subcell simulated margins are compared with the experimental results.>

Superconducting Digital Electronics Based on Single Flux Quantum

Hisao Hayakawa

Single flux quantum (SFQ) logic circuits, in which a single flux quantum is used for an information carrier, have a possibility to open a new digital system operated with over 100 GHz clock frequencies at extremely low power dissipations. Recently, much progress in basic technologies for designing SFQ circuits and operating circuits with high speeds has been done. By taking advancements in these designing tools, circuits including more than several thousands junctions easily operated with the clock frequency of more than several tens GHz. Applications of SFQ circuits such as high performance computers, high end router and high end servers are being developed in the world taking advantages of the high through-put nature and the low power dissipation of the SFQ logic.

Superconductive single flux quantum (SFQ) circuits, which perform their circuit operations by controlling propagations of flux quanta in connected superconducting rings, can operate at the frequency of several tens GHz with ultra low power dissipation. The SFQ circuit is thought to be an attractive candidate for fundamental elements of future high-end information processing systems. This paper reports the development of SFQ microprocessors for high-end computation systems.
