Abstract

Constraint satisfaction problems (CSPs) represent a fundamental class of NP-complete problems that pose significant challenges for classical computation, particularly as problem instances grow in size. This work investigates the application of quantum computing techniques – specifically quantum annealing and quantum walks – to accelerate the solution process for CSPs. The core idea involves mapping the CSP to an equivalent quantum Ising model. This model is then targeted for solution via quantum annealing, exploiting quantum tunneling to escape local minima and explore the solution space. Furthermore, quantum walk algorithms are explored for efficient solution space traversal. The potential for achieving speedups over traditional CSP solvers is examined, highlighting the promise of quantum computing for tackling computationally intensive combinatorial optimization problems. The research focuses on the theoretical design and analysis of these quantum algorithms, without requiring experimental validation. The primary outcome is a framework for designing quantum algorithms tailored to specific CSP instances, providing a foundation for future research and potential implementation.

Constraint Satisfaction Problems (CSPs) are a fundamental class of computational problems prevalent in various fields, including artificial intelligence, optimization, and cryptography. Traditional CSP solvers often struggle with the exponential complexity associated with large, complex graphs. This research investigates the potential of quantum algorithms, specifically those utilizing quantum walks, to significantly accelerate the solution process for CSPs. We propose a framework that maps CSP instances onto graphs and employs quantum walk algorithms to efficiently traverse the solution space. The core of our approach leverages the quantum superposition principle, enabling the simultaneous exploration of multiple potential solutions. We demonstrate, through theoretical analysis and algorithmic design, that quantum walks can offer a substantial speedup compared to classical algorithms for certain CSP instances, particularly those with high connectivity and large solution spaces. This work contributes a novel approach to tackling computationally intensive CSPs by integrating quantum computing principles with graph traversal techniques, representing a potentially transformative advancement in solving complex optimization challenges.

Quantum-Inspired Quantum Annealing for Constraint Satisfaction Problems

Jincheng Zhang

Constraint Satisfaction Problems (CSPs) represent a significant class of computational challenges found across diverse fields, including artificial intelligence, operations research, and computer science. Traditional approaches to solving CSPs often struggle with scalability and efficiency, particularly when dealing with complex, high-dimensional problems. This paper proposes a novel approach to CSP solving leveraging principles inspired by quantum annealing, specifically focusing on mimicking quantum tunneling and superposition. We introduce a quantum-inspired annealing architecture designed to efficiently explore solution spaces. The core idea is to translate the underlying probabilistic nature of quantum tunneling into a deterministic annealing process, providing a more effective mechanism for escaping local minima compared to conventional simulated annealing. The proposed architecture incorporates a modified spin model and a tailored annealing schedule to optimize the exploration process. We demonstrate the potential of this approach through theoretical analysis and a conceptual framework, illustrating its capacity to address complex CSPs more effectively. The primary contribution lies in the shift from solely simulating quantum phenomena to actively incorporating core quantum mechanical concepts within an annealing framework, offering a potentially more powerful and scalable solution to CSPs.
