A Census of the Twos ── What Must Be Moved for Each 2 to Move: the Dimension, the Roughness, the Assumed Error Law ── and the Ones That Do Not Move ── [Paper 157]
A census of the twos - one shape of exponent, arriving from this many different places. This corpus has met the exponent 2 in many places. Each has been written about separately, but no paper has yet called them all by name at once. This one does, using a single test: what must be moved for that 2 to move? NO NEW MATHEMATICAL THEOREM AND NO NEW PHYSICAL LAW IS CLAIMED. The inverse-square law, the Born rule, Ito's lemma, maximum likelihood and Clifford algebras are all standard. Nor does this paper retract anything the corpus has said about the individual twos. First, the 2 of the inverse square is d minus one. A spherically symmetric harmonic function in d dimensions satisfies a second-order ordinary differential equation, and reading off the exponent of the force gives one in two dimensions, two in three, three in four, four in five and five in six. The 2 of the inverse square is simply d minus one read at three dimensions. What must be moved is the spatial dimension (Papers 01 and 156). Second, Born's 2 does not move with the dimension, and what fixes it is unitarity. Draw a random unitary matrix and a random unit vector, and ask whether the sum of the p-th powers of the absolute values of the components changes. At p of one the largest change is 0.6698, at 1.5 it is 0.2279, at 2.5 it is 0.1798, at three 0.4248 and at four 0.4364. But at p of two it is 8.882 times ten to the minus sixteen - machine precision (computed here, worst case over four hundred draws in six dimensions). Holding p at two and changing the dimension of the Hilbert space to two, three, five, eight and thirteen leaves the change at order ten to the minus fifteen throughout. What must be moved is therefore not the dimension but the demand that time evolution be unitary. This paper does not call that a derivation of the Born rule: the derivation is Gleason's theorem (Paper 71), whose assumptions are far weaker than a random trial. What is shown here is only the step before - with any other exponent, probability is not conserved at all. Third, Ito's 2 moves with the roughness of the path. Generating fractional Brownian motion of Hurst exponent H exactly and measuring the quadratic variation as the mesh is refined, theory predicts a scaling of n to the one minus two H. The measured slopes were 0.5965 at H of 0.2, 0.3028 at 0.35, 0.0046 at 0.5, minus 0.3081 at 0.65 and minus 0.5917 at 0.8, agreeing with the predicted 0.60, 0.30, 0.00, minus 0.30 and minus 0.60 to within 0.01 (computed here). The quadratic variation is finite and non-zero only at one half. What must be moved is the roughness of the path, not the spatial dimension (Paper 132). Fourth, and this is what is new here. The 2 of least squares is the assumed error law itself. Minimising the sum of the p-th powers of the residuals is maximum likelihood for errors whose density is proportional to the exponential of minus the absolute residual to the p, so p of two corresponds to the Gaussian and one to the Laplace law. The exponent is therefore not a property of the data but the name of an assumption. With a true location of 3.0, forty points and two thousand repetitions: under Gaussian errors the p of two estimator gives 0.1565 against 0.1983 and wins; under Laplace errors p of one gives 0.1782 against 0.2199 and wins; and under Cauchy errors p of one gives 0.2632 while p of two gives 128.3741 - a factor of about five hundred (computed here). The exponent that wins matches the exponent of the law that generated the data. The gap under Cauchy noise is not a loss of accuracy but a breakdown of the estimator: the Cauchy law has no variance, so minimising a sum of squares has lost its meaning. It is the same shape of failure that Paper 129 described when it wrote that the variance form of the uncertainty relation says nothing once the variance diverges. So the 2 of least squares has a distinct root from the inverse square, from Born and from Ito - what must be moved is neither the dimension nor the roughness but the probability law one assumed. Fifth, Clifford's 2 cannot be moved. The defining relation of a Clifford algebra is that a vector squared equals the value of the quadratic form, and in the Pauli algebra each of the three squares minus the identity is exactly the zero matrix. There is no parameter here to turn: replacing the 2 does not give a different Clifford algebra, it gives no Clifford algebra (the same shape as epsilon squared being zero as a definition of a ring, in Papers 104 and 148). The census. The inverse-square 2 moves with the spatial dimension, has general form d minus one, and lives in harmonicity. Born's 2 moves with nothing, being held by unitarity. Ito's 2 moves with the roughness and is finite only at one half. The least-squares 2 moves with the assumed error law, its general form being the exponent in the density. Clifford's 2 cannot be moved, being a definition. Fourier's one half likewise does not move, arriving as the value of an extremum. One question, three answers, and three cases of nothing at all - and the three nothings are not the same either: Born's is held by a uniqueness theorem, Clifford's by a definition, and Fourier's arrives as an extremal value. The verdict is the same and the reason for it is different in all three. IMPORTANT (scope): a census of established standard material (Layer 2). What is not claimed: any new mathematical theorem or physical law (there is none) / any retraction of what the corpus has said about the individual twos (there is none). What is added: calling five twos by name under one test, showing in numbers that unitarity selects p equal to two uniquely, measuring the slope of the quadratic variation against one minus two H, and giving the 2 of least squares its address as an assumed error law, exhibited as a factor of five hundred under Cauchy noise. What remains: one shape of exponent, arriving from this many different places. On meeting a 2, the question to ask is not why two but what would have to move for it to stop being two. Only when that question has no answer may the 2 be written down as something that does not move. Born's Exponent and Gleason's Theorem: Placing the Geometric Reading Beneath the Stronger Derivation — and the Qubit, Where Gleason Is Silent. Papers 53 and 68 read the exponent 2 of Born's rule as a sesquilinear "2": p = |ψ|² = ⟨ψ|P|ψ⟩, the same quadratic form as the Hopf (Bloch) map. This paper asks the honest question (is "why 2" derived or merely assumed?) and places the geometric reading beneath the rigorous royal-road result. Gleason's theorem (1957) shows that on a Hilbert space of dimension ≥ 3, any non-contextual, countably additive measure on the projection lattice has the form μ(P) = Tr(ρP); for a pure state this is Born's rule, exponent 2 included, DERIVED from assumptions strictly weaker than assuming |ψ|². Hence a clear hierarchy: Gleason (and, for all dimensions including the qubit, the POVM extension of Busch 2003) is the derivation; Papers 53/68 are a geometric picture, subordinate as a derivation, complementary as a picture. The one place the picture is not subsumed: projective Gleason requires dim ≥ 3 and FAILS for the qubit (dim 2), exactly the Hopf case of Paper 68, restored only by POVM-Gleason, and precisely where the geometric picture earns its keep. Finally, Gleason grounds Paper 68's "census of twos" by forcing the sesquilinear form (non-contextuality). Neither Gleason nor this paper solves the measurement problem; the distinct roots stay distinct. A note on the aim of this work. This is a structural interpretation and an act of intellectual humility: it defers to Gleason's theorem and keeps only the geometry that survives beneath it. It is not a new derivation of the Born rule and does not solve the measurement problem. Nothing here is intended to contradict existing results. On the making of this work: The ideas and content of this work stem from the author's own considerations. Quantum mechanics says that when you measure a system, the probability of an outcome is the squared modulus of that outcome's amplitude — not absolute value, not cubed, not some other power. The exponent has been two since Born wrote it down in 1926, and for a century it has been a postulate. Copenhagen accepts it as a brute fact; Many-Worlds tries to derive it from decision theory; QBism reframes it as Bayesian credence; Zurek derives it from environmental symmetries; Hardy derives it from operational axioms. Each program leaves at least part of the question unanswered: why squared, and not some other exponent? Gleason's 1957 theorem went part of the way: given a few structural conditions on quantum probability assignments, the squared form is mathematically forced. But Gleason leans on one substantive assumption — non-contextuality — that standard QM postulates rather than derives. This walkthrough shows how the Event Density framework derives the Born rule, including the squared exponent *and* the non-contextuality assumption underneath it, from a smaller set of structural commitments about what reality is made of at the substrate level. The chain has three load-bearing steps: (i) the participation measure is forced to the form √b · e^{iπ} via the Cauchy functional equation on bandwidth additivity plus Frobenius's theorem on real division algebras; (ii) the sesquilinear inner product on the participation-measure space is forced, delivering the Hilbert-space structure Gleason operates on; (iii) non-contextuality is forced by the channel-as-primitive ontology. With non-contextuality derived rather than postulated, Gleason–Busch applies directly. The squared exponent is a consequence of the framework, not a separate postulate.
Three ceilings over one inequality - and no two are held down by the same thing. Three upper bounds are spoken of for the CHSH quantity: the classical two, the quantum two root two, and the algebraic four. This paper calls all three by name and shows that no two of them are held down by the same thing. NO NEW PHYSICAL LAW IS CLAIMED. Bell's inequality, CHSH, the Tsirelson bound, the PR box and the no-signalling condition are all standard. Nor does this paper answer why nature stops at two root two - that is an open research question, and what can be written is the address, and no further. First, the classical ceiling is combinatorics. A local deterministic strategy merely fixes four signs in advance, and there are only sixteen of them. Exhausting all sixteen, the CHSH quantity falls between minus two and two, with a maximum absolute value of exactly two (computed here). Mixing cannot raise it: a probabilistic mixture is a convex combination of these extreme points, so the maximum is attained at one of them. The bound of two therefore follows from the assumption of local determinism alone, by counting signs. Its address is combinatorics. Second, the quantum ceiling comes out of density matrices. Measuring a singlet along zero, ninety, forty-five and minus forty-five degrees, the four correlations all have absolute value 0.7071067811865475 and the CHSH quantity is 2.8284271247, differing from two root two by 4.44 times ten to the minus sixteen (computed here). Drawing both the two-qubit state and the four measurement directions at random forty thousand times, the bound was never once exceeded, the largest value found being 2.7291936631. Random directions rarely land near the optimal configuration, which is why the search stopped there; all this paper takes from the trial is that the bound was not exceeded, and it is not a proof of the bound. Third, and this is the core. What stops quantum mechanics there is geometry. For the singlet the correlation is minus the inner product of two direction vectors, so the CHSH quantity is bounded above by the length of b plus b prime added to the length of b minus b prime. Maximising that over two unit vectors gave 2.8284271247 across two hundred thousand random pairs, attained exactly when the two are orthogonal. The reason fits on one line: the sum of the squares of those two lengths is fixed at four, and the sum of two numbers with a fixed sum of squares is largest when they are equal, whence the bound of two root two. The address of two root two is therefore the inner product, and the Bloch-sphere geometry of Paper 68 appears here unchanged. Where the classical two counted signs, this one measures lengths - distinct roots. Fourth, the brake. What forbids four is not relativity. The PR box has correlations plus one, plus one, plus one and minus one, and reaches exactly four. Yet writing out its marginals for each of the other party's settings, they remain 0.500 whatever either side chooses - the PR box does not signal (verified here). Relativity therefore permits four, and the explanation that it stops at two root two because of relativity does not explain that. What stops it is the state space. Locality was already surrendered above two, and no-signalling allows all the way to four; what remains is the single fact that the correlations are inner products of unit vectors, and that gives two root two. The census. The ceiling of two is held by local determinism, moved by allowing non-locality, and lives in combinatorics. The ceiling of two root two is held by the quantum state space, moved only by changing the inner-product geometry, and lives in geometry. The ceiling of four is held by outcomes drawn from plus and minus one, moved only by changing the range of outcomes, and lives in arithmetic. One inequality carries three ceilings and no two are held down by the same thing. The sentence that Bell's inequality has been violated is a statement about the first ceiling only. And the two and the root two appearing here are distinct from all five twos counted in Paper 157: here the two comes from arrangements of signs and the root two from the sum of two numbers with a fixed sum of squares. The census of that one word is not finished. IMPORTANT (scope): a census of established standard material (Layer 2). What is not claimed: any new physical law (there is none) / an answer to why nature stops at two root two (open). What is added: obtaining the classical ceiling by exhaustion, obtaining the quantum one from density matrices and confirming non-exceedance by random search, exhibiting the source of two root two numerically as the geometry of an inner product, and checking that the PR box reaches four while not signalling, which fences the explanation that relativity is what stops us. What remains: once one notices that there are three ceilings, the word violated turns imprecise. What was violated is the first. The second has never once been broken, and the third stands empty in a place relativity allows, with nobody living there. There are states about which the whole is completely known and the parts are not known at all. Paper 88 wrote that under the single word entropy there are two different quantities, the coarse-grained one and the horizon-area one. This paper adds a third address: the von Neumann entropy. NO NEW PHYSICAL LAW IS CLAIMED. The von Neumann entropy, subadditivity, the Araki-Lieb triangle inequality and the negativity of the conditional entropy are all standard. Nothing in Paper 88 is retracted: the separation of the two entropies stands, and a third is simply added. First, it is not Shannon's entropy quantised. Shannon's entropy requires a probability distribution, and a quantum state does not come with one, since a different distribution appears for each basis one measures in. Collecting the Shannon quantity over twenty thousand measurement bases for random single-qubit mixed states, the value measured in the eigenbasis equalled the von Neumann entropy to machine precision, with a difference of zero in all four cases, while random bases only approached it from above. The von Neumann entropy is therefore the smallest Shannon quantity obtainable by measurement: in any other basis, more disorder is reported than the state actually holds. The two start from different data - Shannon is handed a distribution and returns a number, while von Neumann is handed a state and chooses the distribution himself. Second, unitary evolution does not change it at all. Over four thousand random four-dimensional density matrices and random unitaries, the largest change was 2.33 times ten to the minus fifteen. It is exactly conserved for a closed system. So the von Neumann entropy cannot by itself be the arrow of time: the arrow requires something non-unitary, a partial trace, a measurement or a coarse-graining (Papers 77, 78 and 88). Third, and this is the core. The whole can carry less than a part. For the singlet state the entropy of the pair is zero, being a pure state, while either half alone has entropy 0.6931471806, that is the natural logarithm of two. Classically this cannot happen: drawing two hundred thousand random two-by-two joint distributions and measuring the entropy of the whole minus the larger of the two parts, the smallest value found was 0.007226 and it was never once negative. Classically, knowing the whole includes knowing the parts; quantum mechanically it does not, and there are states about which the pair is completely known and either half alone is not known at all. This is not a statement that quantum systems are more disordered: an entropy of zero for the pair says there is no disorder whatever. It says only that the information has been placed in the correlation rather than in the parts. Fourth, the conditional entropy therefore turns negative. For the singlet it is minus 0.6931471806, that is minus the logarithm of two, while over the same two hundred thousand classical draws the smallest value was 0.009555. The classical conditional entropy is bounded below by zero and the quantum one reaches minus the logarithm of two - the two do not even share a sign convention, being written with the same symbol and called by the same name while having different ranges. Negative entropy is not a figure of speech but has an operational meaning, readable as a resource for future use in quantum state merging; this paper does not enter that interpretation, since what can be written is that the value is negative, and its address. Fifth, what stands in its place. Over twenty thousand random two-qubit states of random rank, subadditivity and the Araki-Lieb triangle inequality were violated zero times, and the singlet lies exactly on the boundary of the triangle inequality, the difference between the parts being zero and the whole being zero as well. The classical inequality is not weakened but replaced. The census. The coarse-grained entropy lives in the observer's resolution and is moved by changing the coarse-graining (Papers 77, 78, 88). The horizon-area entropy lives in the boundary area and dimension and is moved by changing the area (Papers 73, 88). The von Neumann entropy lives in the spectrum of the density matrix and is moved only by a non-unitary operation. Three quantities under one word: the first lives in the observer, the second in the boundary, and the third in the state itself. Of the three, only the third is unchanged by the passage of time. Entanglement entropy is known to obey an area law in field theory, so there is a rhyme between the third and the second. This paper does not write that they share a root: one is fixed by the choice of subsystem, the other by geometry. The line Paper 88 drew, that the only relation is a bound, is not crossed here either. IMPORTANT (scope): a census of established standard material (Layer 2). What is not claimed: any new physical law (there is none) / any retraction of Paper 88 (there is none) / an interpretation of negative entropy (not entered). What is added: measuring that the eigenbasis Shannon quantity equals the von Neumann entropy, checking unitary invariance numerically, confirming on two hundred thousand samples that the classical inequality never fails and setting it against the quantum minus logarithm of two, and writing for each of the three entropies what must be moved for it to move. What remains: there are states about which the whole is completely known and the parts are not known at all. In classical language that sentence contradicts itself. It does not contradict itself because the information has been placed not in the parts but between them.
Symmetry fixes the ratios, dynamics fixes the scale - a census of the Wigner-Eckart theorem. The Wigner-Eckart theorem splits a matrix element of a tensor operator into a Clebsch-Gordan coefficient and a reduced matrix element. This paper writes that this split is not the corpus's split into convention and fact, and that there are in truth three layers, not two. NO NEW MATHEMATICAL THEOREM AND NO NEW PHYSICAL LAW IS CLAIMED. Wigner, Eckart, the Clebsch-Gordan coefficients and the Condon-Shortley phase convention are all standard. The coefficient values were computed here with sympy's Clebsch-Gordan implementation. First, the counting is the whole of the claim. The matrix elements run over three magnetic quantum numbers, so their number is fixed by the dimensions of the multiplets and the rank: twenty-seven when both angular momenta are one and the rank is one, twenty-four for three halves and one half at rank one, forty-five for two and one at rank one, and a hundred and twenty-five for two and two at rank two. The theorem collapses all of them to a single number. Everything else is a Clebsch-Gordan coefficient, a number the group decides. Second, the ratios are fixed with no free parameter. Computing all twenty-seven coefficients for the case where both angular momenta are one and the rank is one, six are nonzero, and each is the square root of two over two with one sign or the other. All are therefore fixed multiples of one another, and not one free parameter enters the ratios. Moreover a selection rule appears that could not have been anticipated. The coefficient with all three magnetic quantum numbers zero vanishes, so within the multiplet of angular momentum one the matrix element joining the two states of zero magnetic quantum number through the zero component of a vector operator is zero. It vanishes although the rule on magnetic quantum numbers is satisfied. Knowing only that rule, this zero cannot be predicted; the theorem gives not only which transitions are allowed but where an allowed one nevertheless vanishes. Third, the selection rules are the theorem's zero set. Listing the coefficients at zero magnetic quantum number for a rank-one tensor operator: from angular momentum zero to zero the coefficient vanishes and the transition is forbidden; from zero to one it is one and allowed; from one to two it is the square root of six over three and allowed; from one to three it vanishes and is forbidden. That a transition from zero to zero is forbidden for a vector operator is exactly the coefficient vanishing there. A selection rule is thus not an extra assumption but the statement about ratios read where the coefficient is zero; the rule and the ratio are one statement read in two places. One caution: from one to one the transition is allowed by the rule on angular momentum, yet the coefficient vanishes at zero magnetic quantum number. The rule about the angular momentum and the rule about the magnetic quantum number are separate statements (Paper 17). Fourth, and this is the core. There are three layers, not two. Multiplying the reduced matrix element by an arbitrary phase makes the individual matrix elements move with that phase while it cancels in every ratio (confirmed here symbolically). So there are three layers: the Clebsch-Gordan coefficient, a forced geometry decided by the group; the size of the reduced matrix element, a dynamics decided by measurement; and its phase and sign, a convention we choose (Condon-Shortley). What matters here is that what Wigner-Eckart separates is not convention from fact. The Clebsch-Gordan coefficient and the reduced matrix element are both facts, one decided by the group and the other by measurement, and the separator is not whether we chose it but what the answer depends on. The convention exists separately, as a third layer, and applying the corpus's dichotomy directly would miss it. Only the ratios reach observation, and the phase disappears there. Paper 112 called the roll on the shape in which a region is allotted and inside it there is freedom, across six distinct roots; here too the frame is allotted and only one number inside is free, though the address differs, there the freedom of states and here the freedom of a coupling strength. Fifth, the theorem gives no magnitude whatever. The reduced matrix element is entirely undetermined by symmetry, and the group says nothing about whether a transition is strong or weak; it says only how the strengths within a multiplet are related. The same shape appears here for a third time. Paper 129 said that the one half comes from mathematics and Planck's constant from physics, and Paper 131 that the natural logarithm of two is a convention while the temperature is physics. Here the ratios come from symmetry and the scale from dynamics. All three are the same shape: the form and the scale arrive from different places. This is not to say the result is light. That the ratios are completely fixed is itself a strong prediction: one measurement determines the whole multiplet, and a measurement departing from the ratios throws the symmetry assumption into doubt. The statement is shaped so as to be refutable. IMPORTANT (scope): a census of established standard material (Layer 2). Every work cited is standard. What is not claimed: any new mathematical theorem (there is none) / any new physical law (there is none) / that the Wigner-Eckart theorem is in error (it is not) / that symmetry is powerless (it is not; fixing every ratio is a strong prediction). What is added: making explicit that the symmetry-dynamics split is not the convention-fact split, counting the phase as a third layer, confirming the invariance of ratios symbolically, and exhibiting a selection rule invisible in advance. What remains: 'symmetry explains the spectrum' is half a sentence. What symmetry explains is the ratios within a multiplet and not the size of any one of them, and in reading a ratio one should check that the third layer, the phase, has cancelled. Only two of the three layers ever reach observation. On the making of this work: The ideas and content of this work stem from the author's own considerations.
