Abstract

. Taking into account the multipole interactions and Rydberg fine-structure interaction, we calculate the adiabatic potential curves and corresponding vibrational energy levels. The calculated molecular potentials are in good agreement with the measured microwave spectra. Our results provide a quantitative spectroscopic characterization of fine-structure-mixed cesium Rydberg macrodimers and demonstrate microwave spectroscopy as a useful tool for probing long-range Rydberg molecules.

Cs 62 D J Rydberg-atom macrodimers formed by long-range multipole interaction

Xiaoxuan Han, Suying Bai, Yuechun Jiao +5 more

Long-range macrodimers formed by $D$-state cesium Rydberg atoms are studied in experiments and calculations. Cesium ${[62{D}_{J}]}_{2}$ Rydberg-atom macrodimers, bonded via long-range multipole interaction, are prepared by two-color photoassociation in a cesium atom trap. The first color (pulse A) resonantly excites seed Rydberg atoms, while the second (pulse B, detuned by the molecular binding energy) resonantly excites the Rydberg-atom macrodimers below the ${[62{D}_{J}]}_{2}$ asymptotes. The molecules are measured by extraction of autoionization products and Rydberg-atom electric-field ionization, and ion detection. Molecular spectra are compared with calculations of adiabatic molecular potentials. From the dependence of the molecular signal on the detection delay time, the lifetime of the molecules is estimated to be $3--6\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{s}$.

Adiabatic potentials of cesium ( nD J ) 2 Rydberg–Rydberg macrodimers

Xiaoxuan Han, Suying Bai, Yuechun Jiao +3 more

Abstract Electrostatic multipole interactions generate long-range Rydberg–Rydberg macrodimers. We calculate the adiabatic potentials of cesium nD J 2 Rydberg macrodimers for principal quantum numbers n ranging from 56 to 62, for J = 3/2 and 5/2, and for the allowed values of the conserved sum of the atomic angular-momentum components along the internuclear axis, M . For most combinations ( n , M , J ) exactly one binding potential exists, which should give rise to Rydberg macrodimer states. We study the dependence of the adiabatic potentials on the size of the two-body basis sets used in the calculation, and on the maximal order, q max , of the multipole terms included in the calculation. We determine the binding energies and lengths of the binding adiabatic potentials, investigate their scaling behaviors as a function of the effective principal quantum number, and discuss vibrational-state wave functions. We consider the applicability of the calculated potentials and excitation rates to an experimental scheme for preparing nD J 2 Rydberg-atom macrodimers using two-color double-resonant photoassociation.

Microwave photo-association of fine-structure-induced Rydberg ( n + 2 ) D 5 / 2 n F J macro-dimer molecules of cesium

Long-range ( n + 2 ) D 5 / 2 n F J Rydberg macro-dimers are observed in an ultracold cesium Rydberg gas for 39 ≤ n ≤ 48 . Strong dipolar flip ( 〈 D 5 / 2 F 5 / 2 | V ̂ d d | F 5 / 2 D 5 / 2 〉 , 〈 D 5 / 2 F 7 / 2 | V ̂ d d | F 7 / 2 D 5 / 2 〉 ) and cross ( 〈 D 5 / 2 F 7 / 2 | V ̂ d d | F 5 / 2 D 5 / 2 〉 ) couplings lead to bound, fine-structure-mixed ( n + 2 ) D 5 / 2 n F J macro-dimers at energies between the F J fine-structure levels. Observation of Rydberg-Atom Macrodimers: Micrometer-Sized Diatomic Molecules

Heiner Saßmannshausen, Johannes Deiglmayr

Long-range metastable molecules consisting of two cesium atoms in high Rydberg states have been observed in an ultracold gas. A sequential three-photon two-color photoassociation scheme is employed to form these molecules in states, which correlate to np(n+1)s dissociation asymptotes. Spectral signatures of bound molecular states are clearly resolved at the positions of avoided crossings between long-range van der Waals potential curves. The experimental results are in agreement with simulations based on a detailed model of the long-range multipole-multipole interactions of Rydberg-atom pair states. We show that a full model is required to accurately predict the occurrence of bound Rydberg macrodimers. The macrodimers are distinguished from repulsive molecular states by their behavior with respect to spontaneous ionization and possible decay channels are discussed.

Microwave spectroscopy and Zeeman effect of cesium ( n + 2 ) D 5 / 2 → n F J Rydberg transitions

Jingxu Bai, Rong Song, Xijun Li +4 more

We report on high-resolution microwave spectroscopy of cesium Rydberg $(n+2){D}_{5/2}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}n{F}_{J}$ transitions in a cold atomic gas. Atoms laser-cooled and trapped in a magnetic-optical trap are prepared in the $D$ Rydberg state using a two-step laser excitation scheme. A microwave field transmitted into the chamber with a microwave horn drives the Rydberg transitions, which are probed via state selective field ionization. Varying duration and power of the microwave pulse, we observe Fourier sideband spectra as well as damped, on-resonant Rabi oscillations with pulse areas up to $\ensuremath{\gtrsim}3\ensuremath{\pi}$. Furthermore, we investigate the Zeeman effect of the clearly resolved $n{F}_{J}$ fine-structure levels in fields up to 120 mG, where the transition into $n{F}_{7/2}$ displays a thee-peak Zeeman pattern, while $n{F}_{5/2}$ shows a two-peak pattern. Our theoretical models explain all observed spectral characteristics, showing good agreement with the experiment. Our measurements provide a pathway for the study of high-angular-momentum Rydberg states, initialization and coherent manipulation of such states, Rydberg-atom macrodimers, and other Rydberg-atom interactions. Furthermore, the presented methods are suitable for calibration of microwave radiation as well as for nulling and calibration of dc magnetic fields in experimental chambers for cold atoms.

Experimental studies of cesium Rydberg atom pair interactions

K. Richard Overstreet

This thesis describes experimental studies of Rydberg atom pair interactions. A new technique is described that combines trapping of ultracold Cesium atoms with Rydberg tagging time-of-flight spectroscopy to attain a velocity resolution of 2.5 cm/s. Using this technique, observed molecular resonances in Cesium spectra are characterized as either dissociating photo-initiated collision processes or bound long range Rydberg atom-Rydberg atom molecules called macrodimers.
