Abstract

Long-range ( n + 2 ) D 5 / 2 n F J Rydberg macro-dimers are observed in an ultracold cesium Rydberg gas for 39 ≤ n ≤ 48 . Strong dipolar flip ( 〈 D 5 / 2 F 5 / 2 | V ̂ d d | F 5 / 2 D 5 / 2 〉 , 〈 D 5 / 2 F 7 / 2 | V ̂ d d | F 7 / 2 D 5 / 2 〉 ) and cross ( 〈 D 5 / 2 F 7 / 2 | V ̂ d d | F 5 / 2 D 5 / 2 〉 ) couplings lead to bound, fine-structure-mixed ( n + 2 ) D 5 / 2 n F J macro-dimers at energies between the F J fine-structure levels. The ( n + 2 ) D 5 / 2 n F J macro-dimers are measured by microwave photo-association from optically prepared [

. Taking into account the multipole interactions and Rydberg fine-structure interaction, we calculate the adiabatic potential curves and corresponding vibrational energy levels. The calculated molecular potentials are in good agreement with the measured microwave spectra. Our results provide a quantitative spectroscopic characterization of fine-structure-mixed cesium Rydberg macrodimers and demonstrate microwave spectroscopy as a useful tool for probing long-range Rydberg molecules.

Observation of Cesium (nD 5/2 +6S 1/2 ) Ultralong-Range Rydberg-Ground Molecules

Suying Bai, Jingxu Bai, Xiaoxuan Han +3 more

Ultralong-range Cs 2 Rydberg-ground molecules ( nD 5/2 + 6 S 1/2 F ) (33 ≤ n ≤ 39, F = 3 or 4) are investigated by a two-photon photo-association spectroscopy of an ultracold Cs gas. Two vibrational ground molecular spectra of triplet 3 Σ and hyperfine mixed singlet-triplet 1,3 Σ molecular states and their corresponding binding energies are attained. The experimental observations are simulated by an effective Hamiltonian including low energy electron scattering pseudopotentials, the spin-orbit interaction of the Rydberg atom, and the hyperfine interaction of the ground-state atom. The zero-energy singlet and triplet s-wave scattering lengths are extracted by comparing the experimental observations and calculations. Dependences of the measured binding energies on the effective principal quantum number, n eff = n − δ D ( δ D is the quantum defect of Rydberg D state), yield the scaling of n eff − 5.60 ± 0.16 ( 3 Σ , F = 3 ) , n eff − 5.62 ± 0.16 ( 3 Σ , F = 4 ) for deep triplet potential and n eff − 5.65 ± 0.38 ( 1 , 3 Σ , F = 3 ) , n eff − 6.19 ± 0.14 ( 1 , 3 Σ , F = 4 ) for shallow mixed singlet-triplet potential well. The simulations of low-energy Rydberg electron scattering show agreement well with the experimental measurements.

Photoassociation of Long-Range n D Rydberg Molecules

David Alexander Anderson, Stephanie Miller, Georg A. Raithel

We observe long-range homonuclear diatomic nD Rydberg molecules photoassociated out of an ultracold gas of Rb87 atoms for 34≤n≤40. The measured ground-state binding energies of Rb87(nD+5S1/2) molecular states are larger than those of their Rb87(nS+5S1/2) counterparts, which shows the dependence of the molecular bond on the angular momentum of the Rydberg atom. We exhibit the transition of Rb87(nD+5S1/2) molecules from a molecular-binding-dominant regime at low n to a fine-structure-dominant regime at high n [akin to Hund's cases (a) and (c), respectively]. In the analysis, the fine structure of the nD Rydberg atom and the hyperfine structure of the 5S1/2 atom are included.

Microwave spectroscopy and Zeeman effect of cesium ( n + 2 ) D 5 / 2 → n F J Rydberg transitions

Jingxu Bai, Rong Song, Xijun Li +4 more

We report on high-resolution microwave spectroscopy of cesium Rydberg $(n+2){D}_{5/2}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}n{F}_{J}$ transitions in a cold atomic gas. Atoms laser-cooled and trapped in a magnetic-optical trap are prepared in the $D$ Rydberg state using a two-step laser excitation scheme. A microwave field transmitted into the chamber with a microwave horn drives the Rydberg transitions, which are probed via state selective field ionization. Varying duration and power of the microwave pulse, we observe Fourier sideband spectra as well as damped, on-resonant Rabi oscillations with pulse areas up to $\ensuremath{\gtrsim}3\ensuremath{\pi}$. Furthermore, we investigate the Zeeman effect of the clearly resolved $n{F}_{J}$ fine-structure levels in fields up to 120 mG, where the transition into $n{F}_{7/2}$ displays a thee-peak Zeeman pattern, while $n{F}_{5/2}$ shows a two-peak pattern. Our theoretical models explain all observed spectral characteristics, showing good agreement with the experiment. Our measurements provide a pathway for the study of high-angular-momentum Rydberg states, initialization and coherent manipulation of such states, Rydberg-atom macrodimers, and other Rydberg-atom interactions. Furthermore, the presented methods are suitable for calibration of microwave radiation as well as for nulling and calibration of dc magnetic fields in experimental chambers for cold atoms.

Measurements of the dipole moments of cesium Rydberg-ground molecules

Jianming Zhao, Jingxu Bai, Suying Bai +1 more

The ultralong-range Cs2 Rydberg molecules consisting of a Rydberg, nD5/2 ( principal quantum number n =35-38), and a ground state atom, 6S1/2 (F=4) are prepared by a two-photon photoassociation spectroscopy in an ultracold Cs gas. This kind of molecule is bound with the low energy scattering and has a permanent dipole moment. We observe two Rydberg-ground state molecular spectra, one is deep-bound molecule, TΣ state, bound by triplet s-wave scattering length and the other one is shallow-bound molecule, S,TΣ state, bound by mixed singlet-triplet s-wave scattering length. The binding energy of Rydberg-ground molecules are attained by analyzing the two photon photoassociation spectrum, corresponding permanent dipole moment is measured by applying an external electric field, which is compared to the calculation.

Experimental studies of cesium Rydberg atom pair interactions

K. Richard Overstreet

This thesis describes experimental studies of Rydberg atom pair interactions. A new technique is described that combines trapping of ultracold Cesium atoms with Rydberg tagging time-of-flight spectroscopy to attain a velocity resolution of 2.5 cm/s. Using this technique, observed molecular resonances in Cesium spectra are characterized as either dissociating photo-initiated collision processes or bound long range Rydberg atom-Rydberg atom molecules called macrodimers.
