Abstract

Abstract We investigate ground-state phase diagram of helicoidal spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates in a harmonic trap when the intraspecies interaction $g$ and the interspecies interaction $g_{\uparrow\downarrow}$ are unequal. In the case of $g>g_{\uparrow\downarrow}$, increasing the strength of the helicoidal spin-orbit coupling can induce a multiple-peak matter-wave structure with small oscillation amplitude. In the case of $g<g_{\uparrow\downarrow}$, increasing the strength of the helicoidal spin-orbit coupling can induce a multiple-peak matter-wave structure with large oscillation amplitude. Our findings show that the helicoidal spin-orbit coupling plays a crucial role in inducing multiple-peak matter waves. Adjusting the spin-orbit coupling strength and the gauge potential can control the number of wave peaks. Finally, we also discuss the ground-state properties under different Zeeman splitting parameters when the helicoidal spin-orbit coupling strength and the gauge potential are fixed.

Ground state of three-component Bose-Einstein condensate with helicoidal spin-orbit coupling

Ji Li, Huan‐Yu Wang

The spinor Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) provides an ideal platform for observing and manipulating topological structures, which arise from the spin degrees of freedom and the superfluid nature of the gas. Artificial helicoidal spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in the spinor BEC, owing to the spatially varying gauge potential and the more flexible adjustability, provides possibly an unprecedented opportunity to search for novel quantum states. The previous studies of the BEC with helicoidal SOC mainly focus on the two-component case. However, there are few reports on the studies of helicoidal SOC in three-component BEC. Especially considering one-dimensional three-component BEC, whether the helicoidal SOC can generate previously unknown types of topological excitations and phase diagrams is still an unsolved problem. In this work, by solving quasi one-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equations, we study the ground state structure of one-dimensional helicoidal spin-orbit coupled three-component BEC. The numerical results show that the helicoidal SOC can induce a phase separation among the components in ferromagnetic BEC. Through numerical calculations of the system, a phase diagram is obtained as a function of the helicoidal SOC strength and gauge potential, which shows the critical conditions for phase separation and phase miscibility in ferromagnetic BEC. Meanwhile, we also study the influences of the helicoidal SOC and the gauge potential on the antiferromagnetic BEC ground state. The numerical results show that the helicoidal SOC is beneficial for the miscibility in antiferromagnetic BEC. When the helicoidal SOC strength or gauge potential increases, the ground state of antiferromagnetic BEC exhibits a stripe soliton structure. Adjusting the strength of helicoidal SOC or gauge potential can control the transitions between a plane-wave soliton and a stripe soliton. In addition, we show the changes of the particle number density maximum and the number of peaks of stripe solitons for adjusting the helicoidal SOC strength or gauge potential. Our results show that helicoidal spin-orbit coupled BEC not only provides a controlled platform for investigating the exotic topological structures, but also is crucial for the transitions between different ground states. This work paves the way for exploring the topological defect and the corresponding dynamical stability in quantum systems subjected to the helicoidal SOC in future.

Anharmonicity-induced phase transition of spin–orbit coupled Bose–Einstein condensates

Kezhi Zhang, Yan Chen

Abstract In the mean-field framework, using variational analysis and numerical simulation, we investigate the effect of anharmonic trap and atomic interaction on the ground-state phases of spin-orbit (SO) coupled Bose–Einstein condensates (BECs) in the harmonic plus quartic potential. Then, the Gaussian wave function is selected to predict the analytical conditions of the phase transition boundary of the SO coupled BECs by using the variational method. We found that the anharmonicity of the external potential induces the SO coupled BECs to undergo a phase transition between the zero-momentum phase and plane-wave phase, which is more pronounced in the cases of weak harmonic potential or strong interspecies interaction. Since the potential energy of the system modified by anharmonicity competes with other energies of the system, the anharmonicity changes the critical SO coupling strength and Raman coupling strength when the phase transition occurs. At the same time, the critical anharmonic coefficients are also affected by interspecies interaction and harmonic potential. Finally, the correctness of the theoretical results is verified by numerical simulation of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation.

Modulational instability of Bose-Einstein condensates with helicoidal spin-orbit coupling

X. X. Li, Rui-Jin Cheng, Ai‐Xia Zhang +1 more

We theoretically study the modulation instability (MI) of the two-component helicoidal spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). The effects of spin-orbit coupling, the helicoidal gauge potential, and atomic interactions on MI are investigated. The results indicate that the presence of the helicoidal gauge potential breaks the symmetric properties of MI, strongly modifies the distribution of the MI region and the MI gain in parameters space, and the MI can be excited even when the miscibility condition for the atomic interactions is satisfied. Furthermore, the effect of the helicoidal gauge potential on MI is strongly coupled with the intra and intercomponent atomic interactions. Particularly, with the increase of the helical gauge potential, the MI gain increases for the repulsive atomic interaction case, however, the MI gain decreases for the attractive atomic interaction case. The direct numerical simulations are performed to support the analytical predictions, and a good agreement is found. Our results provide a potential way to manipulate the MI in BECs with helicoidal gauge potential.

Ground-state phases and collective modes of supersolid spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

Jun-Cheng Liang, Ai‐Xia Zhang, Ju-Kui Xue

Supersolidity, characterized by superfluidity and crystallization, is an exotic state of matter. The spin-orbit- (SO-) coupled Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) provide an ideal paradigm for exploring this quantum state. Here, we present a theoretical analysis of the ground-state phases and collective modes of supersolid SO-coupled BECs in a harmonic trap. The phase diagram of three ground-state phases (i.e., the supersolid phase, plane-wave phase, and zero-momentum phase) is obtained analytically under the condition $\ensuremath{\omega}\ensuremath{\ll}{k}_{0}$ (here, $\ensuremath{\omega}$ is harmonic trap frequency, ${k}_{0}$ is SO-coupling strength), showing the spin polarization, the phase diagram, and the contrast of the supersolid stripes can be effectively manipulated by trapping potential. An efficient scheme to manipulate the supersolid phase is provided. Furthermore, with particular discussion of the supersolid phase, the collective modes in all three phases are obtained with a unified approach, and softening of both dipole and breathing modes with divergence of effective mass at phase transition point is explained analytically and well confirmed by direct numerical simulations. The impact of SO coupling on local currents during the breathing mode is discussed. The anharmonic collective modes are also revealed with the appearance of the flat band in the single-particle dispersion, especially when SO-coupling strength is comparable with trapping potential. Our theoretical method provides a clear physical picture that collective modes of SO-coupled BECs can be regarded as classical harmonic oscillators with an effective mass containing the SO coupling.

Josephson effect and self-trapping in helicoidal spin-orbit coupled Bose–Einstein condensates with optical lattices

Sumaita Sultana, Golam Ali Sekh

Abstract We consider matter-wave bright solitons in helicoidal spin-orbit coupled Bose–Einstein condensates in optical lattices with a view to study Josephson-type oscillation and self-trapping of population imbalance between two pseudo-spin states. For fixed values of nonlinear interaction and lattice parameters, the population imbalance executes Josephson-type oscillation and the frequency of oscillation decreases with the increase of helicoidal gauge potential. The frequency of oscillation, however, increases in presence of nonlinear optical lattices. We find that the population imbalance can oscillate about a non-zero value and result self-trapping for proper choices of parameters of the system. The self-trapping can be enhanced by the increase of helicoidal gauge potential and by properly tuning the lattice parameters.

Influence of helicoidal spin-orbit coupling and Rabi coupling in dynamics of 2D Bose-Einstein Condensates

Sai Satyaprakash Biswal, S. Saravana Veni

This study explores the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with helicoidal spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and Rabi coupling, confined under a two-dimensional harmonic potential. The relationship between helicoidal SOC, non-linear interactions along with Rabi coupling and their impact on the stability and non linear trapped modes of the condensate is analyzed using a coupled Gross-Pitaevski (GP) framework. A linearized GP equation is used to investigate modulation instability (MI), demonstrating the impact of strong coupling effects and anisotropic confinement on the instability dynamics. It has been shown that the modulation instability in the condensate is predominantly governed by the competition between the attractive and repulsive mean-field interactions. Additionally, stability regimes are altered by the harmonic confinement, enhancing their susceptibility to SOC-induced asymmetry and intra- and intercomponent interactions. These results shed light on the possibility for unique quantum phases and emergent characteristics of helicoidal SOC-driven condensates.
