Abstract

We investigate fourth-order non-Hermitian dynamics in rare-earth-ion-doped microcrystals using phase-controlled loops and four-wave mixing. We demonstrate that the complex eigenvalue space enables transitions in nontrivial topological loops. First, single-, double-, and triple-dressing configurations form a perfect nontrivial topological loop at the exceptional point (EP) with less quantum jumps due to weak dressing phase interactions. Still, the loop breaks down far from the EP. Such a topological loop is protected by PT–APT symmetry, which can be broken down by sequence quantization. Moreover, nested and cascade triple dressing form a quasi-topological nontrivial loop due to sequential interactions resulting multi-jump. Here, nested displays more jumps (above 100) due to strong three-dressing interaction, while cascade, nested–cascade, and cascade–nested triple dressing show above 50 jumps due to relatively weaker three-dressing interaction. However, at critical points in the phase-controlled topological loop, the system merged from four to two eigenvalues, creating stable degeneracies and enabling fourth-order non-Hermitian switching between multi-quantum states. Thus, multi-jump dynamics result from high-order dressing phase interaction and internal–external dressing interaction. We propose a quantum random number generator device that generates multi-jumps with 96% efficiency. Non-Hermitian topology enables controlled fourth-order quantum-state switching via quantum jump statistics, applicable to quantum random number generation and information processing.

Non-Hermitian fourth-order spontaneous six-wave mixing in self-diffraction and phase conjugation of an atomic ensemble

Fiza Latif, Zeeshan Mujahid, Muhammad Usman +5 more

The response of open physical systems has recently been recognized as a novel way to engineer non-Hermitian degeneracies, also known as exceptional points (EPs). We investigate the fourth-order parity-time (PT) and anti-parity-time (APT) symmetries for phase conjugation and self-diffraction under spontaneous six-wave mixing (SSWM) processes across various dressing schemes, including parallel, parallel-cascade, parallel-nested, pure-nested, cascade-nested, pure-cascade, and nested-cascade triple dressing schemes. Our investigation reveals that during the “self-diffraction” process sequential fourth-order non-Hermitian interactions between nested and cascade-nested triple dressing fields, where the photon dressing Rabi frequency exhibits dominance, lead to the sequential fourth-order quantization characterized by five EPs. Meanwhile, a sequential third-order PT–APT quantization is governed by six EPs under the dominance of the dephasing rate. Pure-cascade and nested-cascade triple dressing schemes exhibit a third-order quantization accompanied by four EPs. Additionally, the differential interplay between two dressing dephasing rates yields eight EPs in the pure-cascade triple dressing scheme. In the context of phase conjugation, pure-nested and cascade-nested dominated by the photon dressing Rabi frequency manifest a fourth-order PT–APT symmetric quantization characterized by two EPs. Simultaneously, a third-order PT–APT quantization characterized by six EPs results from an enhanced dephasing rate. Finally, three dressing schemes (parallel, parallel-nested, and parallel-cascade) exhibit second-order quantization arising from weakest non-Hermitian interaction. These outcomes are used to develop quantum memory devices with enhanced sensitivity in the atomic system.

Multipartite entanglement generation with high-order non-Hermitian exceptional points from dressing-controlled atomic nonlinearity

Yan Jin, Lifan Chen, Zhan Zheng +6 more

Multipartite entanglement has emerged as a valuable quantum resource for constructing large-scale quantum networks. However, the presence of non-Hermitian features induced by natural microscopic quantum systems significantly modifies the overall response of nonlinear parametric processes, thereby enabling direct manipulation of multipartite entanglement properties. In this study, we demonstrate the generation of multimode entanglement through atomic four-wave mixing (FWM) and analyze the properties of exceptional points (EP) under dressing control in non-Hermitian systems. By leveraging dressing-controlled atomic nonlinearity, we achieve versatile EPs and higher-order EPs by carefully tuning the atomic multi-parameter in the cascading FWM system. Additionally, we investigate the entanglement properties of various permutations of the output signal modes using the positive partial transpose (PPT) criterion. Notably, under non-Hermitian control, the application of single-, double-, and N-dressing splits leads to coherent multichannel control and further extends the scale of quantum entanglement. The outcomes of our research offer a novel approach to actively control non-Hermitian quantum phenomena without relying on artificial photonic structures. Furthermore, this paves the way for the realization of complex quantum information tasks by exploiting the non-Hermitian characteristics of the light-matter interaction.

Realization of Third Order Exceptional Singularities in a Three level non-Hermitian System: Towards Cascaded State Conversion

Sayan Bhattacherjee, Arnab Laha, Somnath Ghosh

The appearance of topological singularities, namely exceptional points (EPs) is an intriguing feature of parameter-dependent open quantum or wave systems. EPs are the special type of nonHermitian degeneracies where two (or more) eigenstates of the underlying system coalesce. In this paper, we present a three level non-Hermitian Hamiltonian which hosts three interacting eigenstates. The matrix elements are optimized in such a way that the intermediate eigenstate interacts with both the other states and the underlying system hosts at least two different second order EPs. The impact of quasi-static parameter variation along a cyclic contour around the embedded EPs on the dynamics of interacting eigenvalues is well investigated in the context of cascaded state conversion. Such dynamics of the eigenvalues shows a clear signature of the third order EP with a combined effect of both the second order EPs. Moreover, we examine the accumulation of phases around the identified EPs and study the hallmark of phase exchange during cascaded state conversions accompanied by the parametric encirclement of the third order EP.

Non‐Hermitian Jumps and EP Loops in the Rates of Coincidence Counts of Time‐Energy‐Entangled W Triphotons

Qingyu Chen, Rui Zhuang, Haitian Tang +4 more

ABSTRACT Manipulating the dissipative dynamics of multiphoton entangled states offers a novel paradigm for quantum information processing. Here, we theoretically investigate the topological dynamics of time‐energy entangled tripartite W‐states generated via spontaneous six‐wave mixing in an atomic ensemble. By constructing an effective non‐Hermitian Hamiltonian, we map energy‐level splitting onto the temporal rates of coincidence counts (RCC). We reveal that multichannel quantum interference manifests as damped Rabi oscillations, with double cascaded and double nested dressing configurations inducing complete and incomplete non‐Hermitian jumps, respectively. Furthermore, we uncover a topological “Multi‐Jump” phenomenon driven by multi‐dressed high‐order Hamiltonian exceptional points (HEPs). Under critical parameter matching, the dressing phase acts as a topological switch, guiding the system across Riemann branch cuts to form closed loops, thereby exhibiting semi‐quantum characteristics that fuse macroscopic wave evolution with microscopic discrete jumps. Deviations from criticality lead to the rupture of topological connectivity. This work provides a foundation for simulating non‐unitary jump dynamics via HEP frameworks and for designing topological‐response‐based quantum sensors.

Three types of third-order non-Hermitian interaction of spontaneous six-wave and eight-wave mixing under multi-dressing effects

Qinyue Yang, Qingyu Chen, Rui Zhuang +4 more

Non-Hermitian degeneracy, also known as exceptional point, has been recently seen as a new way to engineer the response of open physical systems. Based on natural non-Hermitian atomic coherence, we investigate spontaneous six-wave mixing (SSWM) and eight-wave mixing (SEWM) processes under both parity–time (PT) and anti-parity–time (anti-PT) symmetry, and we obtain high-dimensional coherent channels under third-order energy-level splitting. Finally, we reveal that the third-order non-Hermitian interaction between two dressing fields of the nested scheme is the strongest, and the parallel scheme is the weakest, with the cascade scheme considered intermediate between them. It can also be used to develop quantum memory devices with enhanced sensitivity in the atom-like system.

Non-Hermitian optical bistability with polarization quantization in Sm3+:BiPO4

Usman Javed, Qasim Khan, Faisal Munir +5 more

In this study, we investigate non-Hermitian optical bistability in Sm3+:BiPO4 under the influence of polarization quantization. Our work focuses on how polarization affects this bistability, especially near exceptional points (EPs) in a non-Hermitian system. We demonstrate two types of optical bistability jumps: two-step one optical bistability jump and three-step two optical bistability jumps resulting from constructive and destructive polarization quantization. One optical bistability jump, without and with a non-Hermitian self-dressing switch, is observed at destructive and constructive polarization quantization near EP region, respectively. Two optical bistability jumps via nested-cascade dressing at horizontal polarization quantization are stronger than three cascaded dressings at circular polarization quantization. In addition, two types of non-Hermitian optical bistability jumps fit the second-order eigenvector intensity splitting theoretical model. Our findings are significant in controlling optical switching in materials used for quantum technologies. Such results have potential applications in quantization phase transitions in non-Hermitian photonic systems and advanced optical devices.
