Abstract

We propose a novel high-speed robust intensity modulator based on the Sagnac interferometer to support practical decoy-state quantum key distribution systems. It achieves intensity modulation at 10 GHz with a pattern effect below 0.16%.

Patterning-effect mitigating intensity modulator for secure decoy-state quantum key distribution

George L. Roberts, Mirko Pittaluga, Mariella Minder +4 more

Quantum key distribution (QKD) is a technology that allows two users to exchange cryptographic keys securely. The decoy state technique enhances the technology, ensuring keys can be shared at high bit rates over long distances with information theoretic security. However, imperfections in the implementation, known as side-channels, threaten the perfect security of practical QKD protocols. Intensity modulators are required for high-rate decoy-state QKD systems, although these are unstable and can display a side channel where the intensity of a pulse is dependent on the previous pulse. Here we demonstrate the superior practicality of a tunable extinction ratio Sagnac-based intensity modulator (IM) for practical QKD systems. The ability to select low extinction ratios, alongside the immunity of Sagnac interferometers to DC drifts, ensures that random decoy state QKD patterns can be faithfully reproduced with the patterning effects mitigated. The inherent stability of Sagnac interferometers also ensures that the modulator output does not wander over time.

Intensity modulator for secure, stable, and high-performance decoy-state quantum key distribution

Feng-Yu Lu, Xing Ping Lin, Shuang Wang +8 more

Abstract The decoy-state method substantially improves the performance of quantum key distribution (QKD) and perfectly solves crucial issues caused by multiphoton pulses. In recent years, the decoy-state method has occupied a key position in practicality, and almost all the QKD systems have employed the decoy-state method. However, the imperfections of traditional intensity modulators limit the performance of the decoy-state method and bring side channels. In this work, a special intensity modulator and its accompanying modulation method are designed and experimentally verified for the secure, stable, and high-performance decoy-state QKDs. The experimental result indicates that its stable and adjustable intensities, convenient two-level modulation, inherently high speed, and compact structure is extremely fit for future trends and will help the decoy-state method to be perfectly applied to QKD systems.

High-speed and robust modulation of arbitrary polarization states based on Sagnac interferometer for quantum key distribution

Zexu Wang, Huaxing Xu, Bo Liu +3 more

In polarization-encoding quantum key distribution (QKD) systems, achieving high-speed, robust, and low-error polarization modulation helps to increase the secure key rate (SKR). Moreover, the advanced QKD protocols place higher demands on the system’s photon preparation capability, which implies providing additional polarization states for practical implementation. Here, we redesign the Sagnac interferometer and utilize the non-reciprocity of the lithium niobate modulator to eliminate the reverse modulation that limits the modulation speed. The proposed scheme enables high-speed, robust, and low-error modulation with arbitrary polarization states. The average bit error rate (BER) for the 10 min measurement is 0.2332% with a system repetition frequency of 16.5 GHz.

High-speed robust polarization modulation for quantum key distribution

Yang Li, Yu-Huai Li, Hongbo Xie +7 more

Polarization modulation plays a key role in polarization-encoding quantum key distribution (QKD). Here, we report a new, to the best of our knowledge, polarization modulation scheme based on an inherently stable Sagnac interferometer. The presented scheme is free of polarization mode dispersion and calibration as well as insensitive to environmental influences. Successful experiments at a repetition frequency of 1.25 GHz have been conducted to demonstrate the feasibility and stability of the scheme. The measured average quantum bit-error rate of the four polarization states is as low as 0.27% for 80 consecutive minutes without any adjustment. This high-speed intrinsically stable polarization modulation can be widely applied to many polarization-encoding QKD systems, such as BB84, MDI, etc.

Suppression of patterning effect using IQ modulator for high-speed quantum key distribution systems

Yuanfei Gao, Zhiliang L. Yuan

Quantum key distribution (QKD) is an attractive technology for distributing secret encryption keys between distant users. The decoy-state technique has drastically improved its practicality and performance, and has been widely adopted in commercial systems. However, conventional intensity modulators can introduce security side channels in high speed QKD systems because of their non-stationary working points for decoy-state generation. Here, we analyze the transfer function of an in-phase/quadrature (IQ) modulator and reveal its superiority for stable decoy-state generation, followed by an experimental demonstration. Thanks to their convenient two-level modulation and inherent high speed, IQ modulators are ideal for use in high-speed decoy-state QKD systems.
