The Return of Scale: Operational Boundary Activation Beyond Momentum Recoil in Massive Spatial Superpositions

Abstract

The Return of Scale is a technical response to and extension of Lucas C. Céleri, Diogo O. Soares-Pinto, and Daniel A. Turolla Vanzella's The Apparatus Strikes Back: Momentum Conservation and the Cost of Spatial Superpositions (arXiv:2607.08819). It preserves their exact apparatus-recoil visibility as the immutable baseline prediction and asks whether the finite causal participation of an apparatus supplies an experimentally variable boundary of scale. The cited authors are not affiliated with this response, and no endorsement is implied. The note defines the participating apparatus through its acoustic reach, mechanical correlations, preparation interval, and retained degrees of freedom. It factors the total state space into scale, center-of-mass, internal elastic, and environmental sectors to prevent double-counting. A dimensionless, time-local boundary functional is constructed from the gravitational self-energy contrast of the complete branch-dependent particle-apparatus configurations and a normalized record-participation functional. This activates a provisional inter-scale coupling only after recoil, ordinary environmental decoherence, internal modes, and conservation laws have been accounted for. Coherent amplitude transfer between resolved scale sectors is explicitly distinguished from irreversible visibility loss. An exponential residual is permitted only under a weak-coupling Markov reduction with a suitable destination spectrum. The proposed experiment compares matched apparatuses with similar recoil and environmental baselines but different causal propagation structures. A null result constrains the scale-coupling combination; a controlled residual organized by the preregistered boundary variable would motivate a more complete dynamical derivation. This note operationalizes the missing-boundary hypothesis introduced in The Answers Were There All Along and develops the scale-enclosure program presented across Causality and Attraction and Nothing Is All You Need. It does not claim a measured new effect or a numerical threshold.

The Apparatus Strikes Back: Momentum Conservation and the Cost of Spatial Superpositions

Lucas C. Céleri, Diogo O. Soares-Pinto, Daniel A. Turolla Vanzella

Preparing massive particles in coherent spatial superpositions is a central objective of modern quantum science, motivated by applications ranging from fundamental tests of quantum mechanics and gravity to quantum-enhanced sensing. The experimental difficulty of realizing such superpositions is usually attributed to environmental decoherence mechanisms whose impact depends on the details of the experimental implementation. Here we identify a universal constraint arising from momentum conservation and the quantum nature of the preparation apparatus. Any protocol that places a particle of mass $m$ in a spatial superposition with separation $d$ necessarily entangles the particle with the center-of-mass degree of freedom of the apparatus responsible for the splitting. The resulting recoil displacement, fixed by conservation of the mass dipole moment, reduces the coherence of the particle when the apparatus is not included as part of the quantum system. For an apparatus of mass $M$, preserving coherence requires the recoil displacement to remain smaller than the coherence length of the apparatus center-of-mass state, leading to a quantitative bound expressible as a constraint on its temperature and on how rigidly the apparatus is anchored to the laboratory frame. We analyze the implications of this bound for current matter-wave interferometry experiments, proposals for gravitationally mediated entanglement, and tests of quantum mechanics near the Planck scale. Our main result, which may seem counterintuitive, is that the recoil of even heavy macroscopic apparatuses can pose a surprisingly strong constraint on the coherence of spatial superpositions of particles with masses well below the Planck mass. Finally, we discuss why the resulting limitation should be regarded as a conservative estimate and under which conditions it can be interpreted as an instance of false decoherence.

The Answers Were There All Along: General Relativity, the Wave Function, and the Missing Boundary of Scale

Sid J.A. Hubbard

This gateway paper returns to the century-old tension between General Relativity and the quantum wave function for readers who know the argument but may no longer follow its daily literature. It proposes that the persistent representational conflict begins with a missing variable: an explicit address for the scale enclosure in which each description is lawful. The construction adds a countably indexed family of scale domains rather than a smooth extra dimension or a completed continuous infinity. General Relativity remains covariant within each stable spacetime domain, ordinary quantum evolution remains unitary within each stable Hilbert sector, and explicit junction and transfer terms account for changes between adjacent descriptions. The cosmological term is treated as stable-tier boundary curvature whose authority is local to its addressed domain. The paper preserves the Born rule and permits the wave function to remain collapsed by observation in the ordinary operational sense. Its narrower physical hypothesis is that an interaction becomes an observation when it establishes a stable record across a scale boundary. The work distinguishes direct-sum scale projection from tensor-product environmental tracing, states a compatibility condition between quantum transfer and gravitational conservation, and gives formal, relativistic, recovery, experimental, and explanatory failure conditions. It resolves the stated representational mismatch without claiming a complete theory of quantum gravity, a derivation of the Born rule, or experimental confirmation of scale-triggered dynamics.

The Magnitude of Record Backreaction Without a Global Heat Tax: A Weak-Field Audition for Arrow-Specific Record Decoherence, and Why the Leading Answer Is a Null

Tomoyuki Uchida

This paper is the thirty-eighth in a sequence developing an interpretive framework that redescribes physical reality as a causally consistent history of information updates rather than as a collection of independently existing objects. It opens the eleventh grouping — a Gate-VII / U3 audition. After the tenth grouping crossed the dynamical quantum-mechanics–gravity gates (IV–VI) but produced, in its own words, no distinctive empirical signature (Papers 36 and 37 flag U3 and Gate VII as unreached), the eleventh grouping asks whether the framework can force a distinctive world-side observable, rather than one more warrant-side redescription. Its three panels audit independent seams — this one dynamical, Paper 39 structural, Paper 40 the synthesis — each built to yield a definite result either way, so that a null is a genuine outcome rather than a failure. Panel 1 makes Paper 33's deferred magnitude dynamical. Its foil is the Global Heat Tax: the assumption that record backreaction is exhausted by a generic, arrow-blind energy bill, so that the localized excess of a public record gravitates exactly as a generic mass of the same total localized mass-energy and localization would. This foil is deliberately neither Paper 6's already-rejected universal per-bit heat tax nor Paper 33's already-separated source-versus-exported-cost confusion; it is the next question those papers leave open. We audit it in a purified gravitational record-export channel (Model M): a test mass in spatial superposition, and a genuine public record of its own content (with quantum-Darwinist redundancy, per-fragment error, and retention) that does not read the test mass, so that its exported fragments acquire a which-path imprint of the mass's branch only gravitationally, through the mass's branch-dependent Newtonian potential. Two quantities are separated cleanly. The mean localized record mass-energy sources a coherent phase (not decoherence); the fragments' branch distinguishability — governed by their internal-energy variance in the Pikovski time-dilation form — sources the dephasing, defined through the environmental overlap. Against a non-gerrymandered matched baseline (a maximum-entropy generic object of the same retained stress-energy, matched to the order the weak-field approximation keeps), the specificity discriminator reduces to the record's internal-energy variance versus the baseline's. The leading result is a null / reduction theorem. Because the internal-energy variance is a preparable state property, not fixed by mass-energy, a generic object can be specified with matching variance: the record-export channel is not framework-forced-distinct from a matched generic object unless the record's public/retained function constrains its internal-energy variance beyond what equilibrium can share. A concrete cold error-corrected record earns a baseline-relative shift against a passive-equilibrium reference, but that shift is not framework-forced, and an energy-budget ceiling bounds any residual (Gamma_rec below about 1e-22) far beneath realizable testability at tabletop scales; observability moreover requires that the common standard decoherence stay below the interference-visibility threshold, not merely cancel algebraically. On the shared U3Status rubric — whose first axis is split into a baseline-relative shift and a framework-forced shift — the seam scores BaselineRelativeShift positive but FrameworkForcedShift null and Testability null: a Gate-VII candidate at most in principle, not U3. The account is weak-field, bound-type, and per-branch; the dephasing model is a time-local (not necessarily Markovian) master equation, and no gravitational dynamics is derived. The null is treated as a precise map of what the seam cannot carry: it locates where a framework-specific gravitational signature would have to originate — a function-forced constraint on the record's internal-energy variance — and shows that the mere existence of a localized record source does not supply one. Presents no new physics; results are interpretive (L2) on imported physics (L1) and the framework's domain-general discipline (L2-G).

The Nested Causal Pursuit of the Born Rule: Boundary Flux, Enclosure Refinement, and the Point of Rest with Quantum Theory

Sid J.A. Hubbard

The Nested Causal Pursuit of the Born Rule makes explicit the measurement bridge contained in Nested Causality while retaining established quantum mechanics, quantum field theory, and Standard Model interactions as lawful interior dynamics. Zero Infinity is used as an empty reference architecture of countably infinite depth and scale: physical states can also be described as departures from that reference without being replaced by the description. A single accounting cut prevents the same supported departure from being counted again at each enclosing scale. The paper derives the Born measure from enclosure-refinement invariance. Standard quantum theory supplies mutually exclusive record channels and their conserved quadratic loads. Requiring a coarse record and every physically equivalent refinement of that record to carry the same total measure yields an additive functional equation. Continuity and nonnegativity force linearity in quadratic load, producing p(i) = Tr(rho P_i), with the argument extended to generalized measurements through a larger system-apparatus enclosure. A complementary first-passage construction gives the boundary process a testable form. Reference-equivalent, recursively memoryless residual capacities on parallel record channels produce exponential crossings and the same Born weights. A Weibull deformation yields p_i proportional to w_i^alpha and shows exactly where alternatives diverge: every alpha other than one violates refinement invariance. The accompanying Python program reproduces these predictions numerically and reports the refinement defects. The result is a derivation of the Born measure within the combined Nested Causality and established quantum framework. It does not independently derive Hilbert space, unitary evolution, or a complete apparatus-specific boundary instrument. It identifies the remaining calculation: derive the capacity coordinate and completely positive record map of a specified apparatus from its interactions and enclosing geometry.

Scale-Invariant Open Quantum Systems

Carlos Argüelles, Gabriela Barenboim, Gonzalo Herrera +2 more

We develop a complete theoretical framework for open quantum systems coupled to scale-invariant environments. We show that such environments are universally described by unparticle baths characterized by a single scaling dimension $d_{\mathcal{U}}$. This work provides the proof of the uniqueness theorem, the formalism of the resulting non-Markovian dynamics, and applications to several physical systems. From the uniqueness theorem, we derive the non-Markovian memory kernels, the exact noise kernel including vacuum and thermal contributions, and a fractional generalization of the Caldeira-Leggett master equation for arbitrary $d_{\mathcal{U}}$. The scaling dimension governs a rich phase structure, including a thermalization transition at $d_{\mathcal{U}}=3/2$, the Ohmic boundary at $d_{\mathcal{U}}=2$, and a decoherence transition at $d_{\mathcal{U}}=5/2$ in the thermal regime, beyond which long-time quantum coherence is protected. Three realizations are studied. For the quantum Ising model at criticality, coupling to the energy operator in $(1+1)$ dimensions gives $d_{\mathcal{U}}=3/2$, producing $1/f$ noise, while the $(2+1)$D case yields $d_{\mathcal{U}}\approx1.413$ from the conformal bootstrap. In inflationary cosmology, massless scalar and graviton baths in de Sitter spacetime give $d_{\mathcal{U}}=2$, predicting linear decoherence growth consistent with the quantum-to-classical transition. For high-energy astrophysical neutrinos, the decoherence rate $Γ_{\mathrm{decoh}}\propto \mathcal{B}(E,T_{\mathcal{U}})L^{5-2d_{\mathcal{U}}}$ provides an observable signature of the scaling dimension. We also compare the framework with Caldeira-Leggett and Lindblad approaches, analyze the validity regimes, and discuss experimental implications for trapped-ion simulators, neutrino telescopes, and superconducting qubits.

Super Momentum Coherence as a Diagnostic Probe of Asymmetrical Decoherence

John Dangelo

The paper proposes that causality is not a primitive feature of reality but an emergent, branch-internal phenomenology produced by asymmetric decoherence. Because environmental interactions are generically position-local, they preferentially build records in a position-like pointer basis. The buildup of irreversible, redundant records generates definite events and temporal order for embedded observers. Coherence prepared in the complementary momentum sector remains temporarily off-resonant with this rendering process, making it the cleanest probe of onset dynamics. In a decoherence-conditioned gravity framework, this predicts delayed gravitational activation for momentum-prepared sources. If the environment monitors position, then position-prepared structure classicalizes quickly and becomes hard to use as a probe of the rendering process. It already matches the basis the environment reads out.But if you prepare the system in the complementary sector — here, momentum coherence — then the environment does not immediately convert that organization into redundant branch records. So momentum-sector coherence acts like a contrast agent for the rendering dynamics. That is what you call “super-momentum”
