Demonstration of QKD Integration into 5G Campus Network

Patrik Burdiak, Lukáš Kapičák, Libor Michálek +3 more

The paper deals with a proposal and implementation of the quantum key distribution in the 5G campus network. The authors share here their practical experience with the implementation of quantum cryptography in 5G which has been achieved within projects the NATO QUANTUM5 and the Czech Ministry of Interior NeSPoQ, both project contributing to the security of 5G mobile networks. Finally, the results of the experimental research demonstrate how the network performance is affected by the use of QKD.

The Integration of Quantum Key Distribution and Zero Trust Security in 5G Networks: A Comprehensive Review

Md. Rayhan Uddin, NUR ZIADAH HARUN

With the rapid growth of 5G networks that introduce better speed, connectivity, and scalability than previous generation networks, new security threats have also started to arise, especially from quantum computing. Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) and Zero Trust (ZT) have emerged as viable solutions to overcome these security issues. Previous literature has discussed the independent implementation of these two frameworks in 5G networks. However, several new studies have been proposed and examined the integration of QKD and ZTA together in the same network in order to enhance the security against quantum threats, which leaves room for a new comprehensive review that will encompass the current research and development of QKD and ZTA in 5G networks. Therefore, this paper aims to address this gap by reviewing state-of-the-art progress, implementation approaches, and drawbacks of QKD and ZTA in 5G. This review also recommends future research direction by discussing the potential implementation of QKD and ZTA integration together in 5G networks.

Securing the Access to the 5G core with Quantum Key Distribution

Ane Sanz, Asier Atutxa, David Franco +2 more

With the advent of quantum computing, the traditional security mechanisms employed in 5G communications might become vulnerable. Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) stands as a promising approach to secure communications and build 5G networks for ensuring long-term security and safeguarding against emerging quantum threats. In our previous work, a system to integrate QKD in multi-site 5G core networks to secure inter-Network Function (NF) communications was proposed and validated. This paper extends that approach by exploring additional segments of 5G networks prone to quantum vulnerabilities, particularly in the segment between the Radio Access Network (RAN) and the 5G core for both 3GPP and Non-3GPP access. This paper describes the proposed quantum-safe 5G network architecture and discusses the benefits and challenges of deploying QKD-enabled security in these segments.
