Abstract

Discrete modulation is a practical and device-friendly solution for high-speed continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD), offering strong compatibility with existing coherent optical communication systems. However, its achievable transmission distance has remained considerably shorter than that of Gaussian-modulated protocols, limiting its practical deployment. In this work, we overcome this limitation by combining an advanced security analysis method with probabilistically shaped modulation and an efficient digital signal processing algorithm. We experimentally demonstrate a local local oscillator CV-QKD system over a 126.56 km span of single-mode fiber, achieving an asymptotic secret key rate of 171.42 kbps. This result significantly extends the reach of discrete-modulated CV-QKD and confirms its potential as a viable candidate for the commercialization and large-scale practical application of quantum key distribution technology. Discrete modulation offers a practical approach for high-speed transmission in continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) but struggles with limited transmission distances. The authors employ advanced security analysis, sophisticated signal processing algorithms, and probabilistic shaping to achieve a record 126.56 km transmission distance, supporting the commercial viability of CV-QKD systems

Experimental demonstration of high-rate discrete-modulated continuous-variable quantum key distribution system

Yan Pan, Heng 恒 Wang 王, Yun Feng Shao +5 more

A high-rate continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) system based on high-order discrete modulation is experimentally investigated. With the help of the novel system scheme, effective digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms and advanced analytical security proof methods, the transmission results of 5.059 km, 10.314 km, 24.490 km, and 50.592 km are achieved for 1 GBaud optimized quantum signals. Correspondingly, the asymptotic secret key rates (SKRs) are 292.185 Mbps, 156.246 Mbps, 50.491 Mbps, and 7.495 Mbps for discrete Gaussian (DG) 64QAM, and 328.297 Mbps, 176.089 Mbps, 51.304 Mbps, and 9.193 Mbps for DG 256QAM, respectively. Under the same parameters, the achieved SKRs of DG 256QAM is almost same as ideal Gaussian modulation. In this case, the demonstrated high-rate discrete-modulated CV-QKD system has the application potential for high-speed security communication under tens of kilometers.

High-Performance Fully Passive Discrete-State Continuous-Variable Quantum Key Distribution with Local Local Oscillator

Yu Zhang, Xuyang Wang, Chenyang Li +6 more

We propose and demonstrate a fully passive discrete-state continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD), which can eliminate all modulator side channels on the source side, using a local local oscillator. Using specially designed phase rotation and discretization methods, the CV-QKD system achieves a maximum fiber transmission length of 100 km at a repetition rate of 1 GHz in asymptotic security, with the corresponding secret key bit rate being 70.7 kbps. In composable security, secret keys are distributed at 25 km of fiber with a secret key bit rate of 1.66 Mbps. Our protocol significantly simplifies the architecture of CV-QKD system by eliminating the need for optical modulators and random number generators as well as presents robust practical security and superior performance, which is comparable to that of its active discrete-state counterpart. Overall, this protocol is expected to play an important role in quantum metropolitan area networks and quantum access networks requiring high realistic security.

Long distance local local oscillator continuous variable quantum key distribution with digital signal processing

Dengke Qi, Xiangyu Wang, Jiayu Ma +4 more

Quantum key distribution relying on the principles of quantum mechanics enables two parties to produce a shared random secret key, thereby ensuring the security of data transmission. Continuous variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) is widely applied because it can be well combined with standard telecommunication technology. Compared to CV-QKD with a transmitting local oscillator, the proposal of CV-QKD with a local local oscillator overcomes the limitation that local oscillator will attenuate as transmission distance increases, providing new possibilities in long-distance transmission. However, challenges still persist in practical long-distance transmission, including data sampling and recovery under low signal-to-noise ratio conditions. In order to better recover data and reduce the additional excess noise, we propose the least squares fitting algorithm to get more accurate sampling data and complete more accurate phase compensation.Herein, we demonstrate the long-distance local local oscillator CV-QKD experiment which have considered the effect of finite-size block over 120 km of standard optical fiber with high efficient real-time post-processing. The results not only verify the good performance of the system over long distance, but also paves the way for large-scale quantum secure communications in the future.

Coexistence of Continuous-Variable Quantum Key Distribution and Classical Data over 120 km Fiber

Adnan A. E. Hajomer, Ivan D. Derkach, Vladyslav C. Usenko +2 more

Integrating quantum key distribution (QKD) with classical data transmission over the same fiber is crucial for scalable quantum-secured communication. However, noise from classical channels limits QKD distance. We demonstrate the longest-distance continuous-variable QKD (CV-QKD) over 120 km (20 dB loss) in the asymptotic regime, and over 100 km (17 dB loss) in the finite-size regime, both coexisting with a fully populated coarse wavelength division multiplexing system. Natural mode filtering of the local oscillator and phase noise mitigation enabled this without additional filtering or wavelength reallocation. Benchmarking against a commercial discrete-variable QKD system and considering finite-size effects confirms the feasibility of CV-QKD as a plug-and-play solution for typical 80-100 km long-haul optical networks. Our results set a record fiber distance for CV-QKD, showing its potential for cost-effective, large-scale deployment in existing network infrastructure.

Continuous-variable quantum key distribution over 50.4 km fiber using an integrated silicon photonic transmitter and receiver

Shuaishuai Liu, Yan-Xiang Jia, Yuqi Shi +7 more

Quantum key distribution (QKD) is the fastest-growing and relatively mature technology in the field of quantum information, enabling information-theoretically secure key distribution between two remote users. Although QKD based on off-the-shelf telecom components has been validated in both laboratory and field tests, its high cost and large volume remain major obstacles to large-scale deployment. Photonic integration, featured by its compact size and low cost, offers an effective approach to addressing the above challenges faced by QKD. Here, we implement a high-performance, integrated local local oscillator continuous-variable (CV) QKD system based on an integrated silicon photonic transmitter and receiver. By employing a high-speed silicon photonic integrated in-phase and quadrature modulator, a low-noise and high-bandwidth silicon photonic integrated heterodyne detector, and digital signal processing, our CV-QKD system achieves a symbol rate of up to 1.5625 GBaud. Furthermore, the system achieves asymptotic secret key rates of 31.05 and 5.05 Mbps over 25.8 and 50.4 km standard single-mode fiber, respectively, using 8-phase-shift keying discrete modulation. Our integrated CV-QKD system with a high symbol rate and long transmission distance paves the way for the quantum secure communication network in metropolitan areas.
