The goal of this thesis is to explore and develop efficient methods for generating indistinguishable single photons. By examining quantum emitters strongly coupled to either singlemode cavities or plasmonic nanostructures, the dynamics and interactions that lead to single photon efficient generation with high degree of indistinguishability are investigated. This study begins with the theoretical background, introducing the JaynesCummings Hamiltonian and the Lindblad equation, which are essential for understanding the systemreservoir interaction in open quantum systems. Then we show how the photon indistinguishability can be achieved and quantified. Finally, using the quantum regression theorem, the correlation functions which are useful for the calculation of the indistinguishability are derived. This investigation includes both coherent and incoherent coupling regimes, revealing how different parameters, such as coupling strength and cavity decay rate, affect the efficiency and indistinguishability of the emitted photons. Numerical and detailed analytical methods are used to calculate the efficiency and the degree of indistinguishability, providing a comprehensive understanding of the factors that influence photon emission. The obtained results show that high photon indistinguishability and efficiency are achievable under specific conditions. For instance, in the case of a quantum emitter coupled to a plasmonic nanostructure, it is found that under the quasistatic approximation, the system is mathematically identical to the simpler system of a quantum emitter coupled to a leaky cavity. Using the results obtained for the quantum emitter leaky cavity case, it is shown that the more complex, quantum emitter and a plasmonic nanostructure system can produce highly indistinguishable photons with efficiency close to unity under optimal conditions. Additionally, the impact of pure dephasing on photon indistinguishability are analyzed. The findings of this thesis contribute to the advancement of quantum optics and quantum technologies, providing a foundation for developing practical quantum light sources for future technologies.

Highly efficient sources of indistinguishable single photons that can operate at room temperature would be very beneficial for many applications in quantum technology. We show that the implementation of such sources is a realistic goal using solid-state emitters and ultrasmall mode volume cavities. We derive and analyze an expression for photon indistinguishability that accounts for relevant detrimental effects, such as plasmon-induced quenching and pure dephasing. We then provide the general cavity and emitter conditions required to achieve efficient indistinguishable photon emission and also discuss constraints due to phonon sideband emission. Using these conditions, we propose that a nanodiamond negatively charged silicon-vacancy center combined with a plasmonic-Fabry-P\'erot hybrid cavity is an excellent candidate system.
Photons are excellent carriers of quantum information. The generation, manipulation and read-out of photonic quantum states have enabled pioneering investigations in quantum physics, paving the way to groundbreaking technologies. Integrated quantum photonics, that is the processing of photons on-chip, is at the forefront of this revolution. In particular, silicon integrated circuits have emerged as the dominant material platform for large-scale quantum photonics. However, the difficulty to inject single photons on-demand in a silicon chip is a major obstacle to the level of complexity of current systems. In this context, the isolation of individual fluorescent defects in silicon, called color centers, opens an avenue toward the integration of atomic sources of single photons. While several color centers have demonstrated an ability to generate antibunched photons, practical applications require tailoring of their emission through quantum electrodynamics effects in optical cavities. This PhD thesis is devoted to cavity quantum electrodynamics with color centers in silicon optical cavities, in view of building an efficient source of single photons. The efforts are first focused on ensembles of G centers in microring cavities. The optical properties of cavity-coupled G centers are studied using microphotoluminescence spectroscopy, and an enhancement of their zero-phonon emission rate by Purcell effect is demonstrated. However, a quantitative analysis reveals a poor quantum efficiency, motivating the choice of another emitter for further experiments. Subsequently, the efforts are focused on the W center. Purcell enhancement of the overall recombination rate is observed for an ensemble of W centers in a circular Bragg grating cavity. Using a quantitative analysis based on finite-difference time-domain calculation, a high quantum efficiency is estimated. The results being encouraging for the purpose of single photon emission, an optical setup is developed for single-emitter spectroscopy and a strategy is devised to fabricate individually-adressable emitters, leading to the isolation of single W centers in unpatterned silicon-on-insulator. Using a nanofabrication process allowing for deterministic positionning, the emitters are embedded into circular Bragg grating cavities, resulting in an increase of the photoluminescence intensity by orders of magnitude by Purcell effect. This work leads to the demonstration of a source of triggered single photons.A next milestone will be the demonstration of a single photon source for integrated photonic circuits, based on a color center in a waveguide-coupled optical cavity. Beyond the interest for integrated quantum photonics, the observation of bright photoluminescence from single color centers opens perspectives for further experiments, allowing to probe fundamental questions relative to their photophysics.
From secure communication to blazingly fast computation, quantum technologies promise arevolutionary horizon with transformative potential across many areas. Single photon sources, essential to utilizing the special qualities of quantum mechanics, are at the core of many ofthese developments. Because single photons are discrete quanta of light, they provide quantum systems withunmatched precision and control, opening up new possibilities for security and sensitivity inapplications like quantum cryptography, quantum key distribution, and quantum sensing. These sources are fundamental components of quantum computing, in which complicatedcomputations can be completed tenfold more quickly than with traditional computers thanks toqubits contained in single photons. To fully realize the promise of quantum technologies andtheir widespread application, single-photon source development and optimization mustcontinue. In the field of quantum technologies, increasing the spontaneous emission rate of a singlephoton source is important for multiple reasons. First of all, a higher emission rate results in amore effective production of single photons, which is necessary for applications like quantumkey distribution (QKD) that demand a high photon flux. A greater emission rate in QKDincreases the overall security and efficiency of quantum communication systems byguaranteeing a quicker and more dependable interchange of quantum information. All things considered, increasing the spontaneous emission rate of a single photon source iscritical to realizing the full promise of quantum technologies, facilitating quicker and moreeffective quantum computing, sensing, integrated photonics, and communication, and openingthe door for revolutionary developments across a range of industries. This thesis explores the impact of electromagnetic scattering on solid-state single photonemitters' spontaneous emission behavior. By applying sophisticated computational approachesand conducting a comprehensive literature analysis, the study seeks to confirm and reproduceprevious findings, expanding and solidifying our knowledge of basic principles andcomputational strategies in this field. Two different scatterer geometries, a sphere, and a cylinder, activated by a point dipoleapproximation that is frequently employed in quantum optics simulations are the subject of thiswork. The main goal is to thoroughly evaluate and validate previously published results, not topresent new physics, but to guarantee the stability and dependability of computational modelsin the study of interactions between light and matter.
