Abstract

Abstract In this work, we study the process of three-photon resonance ionization of potassium atoms. To carry out the experiments, we used a wide range of changes in the frequency of linearly and circularly polarized radiation of a neodymium laser and its second harmonic. Radiation from a neodymium laser was focused on an atomic beam of potassium.

Resonant three-photon ionization of potassium with circularly and linearly polarized light

Pierre Agostini, P. Bensoussan

We report observations of the ionization of atomic potassium by simultaneous absorption of three dye laser quanta. The laser wavelength is tuned through the two-photon resonances with the 6S1/2 and 4D3/2,5/2 states, and the dependence of the ionization probability on the laser wavelength is investigated for linearly and circularly polarized light. Our results are in agreement with the selection rules and theoretical estimates of the ionization probability.

Multiphoton ionization of Li at the ruby laser wavelength

G. Wagner, Neil R. Isenor

Ionization of Li resulting from the interaction of pulsed single-mode (λ = 694.60 ± 0.05 nm, TEM00) ruby laser radiation with an atomic beam was observed. The results can be interpreted in terms of a four-photon process with three-photon resonances with levels in the vicinity of the 19P and 20P Rydberg levels of the unperturbed atom. Both linearly and circularly polarized light were used. The results are compared with the calculated results of others.

Three Photon Ionization of Alkali Atoms at the Ruby Laser Wavelength

M. R. Cervenan, R. H. C. Chan, Neil R. Isenor

Single mode ruby laser radiation (694 nm) and an atomic beam apparatus have been used in the study of the three photon ionization of Na, K, Rb, and Cs atoms. The process in all cases is nonresonant, the observations being consistent with a rate given by W3F3 where F is the photon flux. The values obtained for W3l (linear polarization) and W3C (circular polarization) and the ratio W3c/W3l are discussed in relation to recently calculated results and the few other experimental results available. Discrepancies well beyond the assigned errors exist between experimental and calculated results.

Saturation Effects in Resonant Three Photon Ionization of Potassium

S E Wheatley, Pierre Agostini, S N Dixit +1 more

The intensity and polarization dependence of the ion production due to three quantum ionization was investigated in potassium. The energy of two of the photons was tuned into resonance with n 2 D levels for 4 < n < 22. The ratio of the ion signals produced with circular polarization to that found with linear polarization was significantly less than that predicted by a single rate approximation. The discrepancy is explained by the increased linewidth of the resonant 2 D level due to the ionization process itself. Single quantum photoionization cross sections for the excited levels calculated by means of quantum defect theory are shown to be consistent with the experimental results.

Two-photon Resonant Three-photon Ionization and Energy Pooling Induced Ionization of Atomic Potassium

Chang Li

Atomic potassium is ionized by three channels when it is excited by a pulse dye laser. They are energy pooling induced ionization, 4S→6S and 4S→4D two photon resonant three photon ionization. The ionization current intensity at various vapor temperature and laser intensity were investigated for the former two ionization channels. The atomic radiation trapping and nonlinear ionization were found in ionization current spectra. The qualitative explanations for above phenomena are given.
