Abstract

Abstract This work explores how the magnetic field, hydrostatic pressure, and well dimensions affect the electronic and optical properties of a quantum well with a Deng-Fan molecular potential. The calculations were performed within the effective mass and parabolic band approximation frameworks. These investigations have involved analyzing the energy spectrum and determining both the linear and third-order nonlinear absorption coefficients. To solve the Schrödinger equation of the system, the diagonalization method was utilized by choosing orthonormal base functions. For the absorption coefficients, the standard density matrix formalism combined with the perturbation expansion method is used. Our calculations were extended to include the traditional Morse-type quantum well. It is observed that the peak positions of the total absorption coefficients associated with the (1–2) intraband transitions in the Morse quantum well are located at relatively low photon energies, which can be attributed to the weak geometric confinement of the potential. In contrast, for equivalent quantum well widths, the Deng–Fan potential yields larger transition energies and higher peak amplitudes. This enhancement arises from its stronger effective confinement and improved short-range behavior. Moreover, the Deng–Fan potential provides superior tunability of potential asymmetry, allowing more precise control over the electronic structure and optical response.

The effect of temperature, hydrostatic pressure and magnetic field on the nonlinear optical properties of AlGaAs/GaAs semi-parabolic quantum well

Jin-Feng You, Qiang Zhao, Zhihai Zhang +3 more

In this paper, we explore the optical properties of AlGaAs/GaAs semi-parabolic quantum well (QW) under different temperature, hydrostatic pressure and applied magnetic field. We calculate the nonlinear optical absorption coefficients and the refractive index changes (RICs) with the compact density-matrix approach and iterative method. Then, within the framework of the effective mass and parabolic-band approximations, the energy eigenvalues and the corresponding wave functions for semi-parabolic QW have been obtained by the finite difference method. The theoretical findings show that (1) the energy spectrum depends strongly on temperature, hydrostatic pressure and applied magnetic field; (2) the linear and third-order nonlinear optical absorption coefficients and the RICs are quite sensitive to temperature, hydrostatic pressure and applied magnetic field. Our study provides a theoretical basis for the fabrication of QW structure.

The Combined Influence of Hydrostatic Pressure and Temperature on Nonlinear Optical Properties of GaAs/Ga0.7Al0.3As Morse Quantum Well in the Presence of an Applied Magnetic Field

Zhihai Zhang, Jianhui Yuan, Kangxian Guo

Studies aimed at understanding the nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of GaAs/Ga0.7Al0.3As morse quantum well (QW) have focused on the intersubband optical absorption coefficients (OACs) and refractive index changes (RICs). These studies have taken two complimentary approaches: (1) The compact-density-matrix approach and iterative method have been used to obtain the expressions of OACs and RICs in morse QW. (2) Finite difference techniques have been used to obtain energy eigenvalues and their corresponding eigenfunctions of GaAs/Ga0.7Al0.3As morse QW under an applied magnetic field, hydrostatic pressure, and temperature. Our results show that the hydrostatic pressure and magnetic field have a significant influence on the position and the magnitude of the resonant peaks of the nonlinear OACs and RICs. Simultaneously, a saturation case is observed on the total absorption spectrum, which is modulated by the hydrostatic pressure and magnetic field. Physical reasons have been analyzed in depth.

The effects of hydrostatic pressure and temperature on the nonlinear optical properties of shallow-donor impurities in semiconductors in a magnetic field

Weiyang Wang, Lei Xu, Xiangfei Wei +2 more

We present a theoretical study of the nonlinear optical properties of shallow-donor impurities in semiconductors subjected to magnetic fields, hydrostatic pressures, and intense laser illumination within the Voigt configuration. The donor energy levels and their wave functions are obtained using a combination of nonperturbative and variational methods where intense laser field effects are exactly taken into account through a laser-dressed Coulomb potential (LdCP). The combined effects of radiation and magnetic fields, hydrostatic pressures, and temperatures on the linear, third-order nonlinear, and total optical absorption coefficients (OACs) for the 1s→2p± and 2pz transitions are investigated using a compact density-matrix approach. We find that the transition energies and geometric factors can be increased or decreased by changing external fields via the LdCP or by changing hydrostatic pressures and temperatures. In this way, saturable absorption depends not only on the incident optical intensity but also on the laser field, which is more easily realized in the z-polarization direction. The peak positions and magnitudes of the linear, third-order nonlinear, and total OACs can be effectively adjusted with an appropriate choice of these external perturbations. Moreover, hydrostatic pressures and temperatures affect these OACs in an opposite way. This opens a promising route to design new and efficient impurity-based devices manipulated by external perturbations.

Abstract This study investigates the multifaceted impact of position-dependent effective mass, temperature, and hydrostatic pressure on the electronic and optical properties of single-doped quantum wells, with a particular emphasis on varying doping levels. Utilizing effective mass and parabolic band approximations, calculations were meticulously conducted via the diagonalization method, employing a trigonometric orthonormal function basis to elucidate the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the confined electron potential. The obtained results unveil substantial alterations in electron energies, state transitions, and absorption spectra consequent to fluctuations in doping levels, temperature, and pressure. These findings provide profound insights into the intricate interplay between semiconductor characteristics and external stimuli, laying a foundation for the optimization of laser and optoelectronic devices through the tailored engineering of material properties. This comprehensive understanding not only advances fundamental knowledge in semiconductor physics but also paves the way for the development of innovative materials with customized optical functionalities, thus driving progress in a wide array of technological applications.

Effects of hydrostatic pressure and temperature on the nonlinear optical properties of GaAs/GaAlAs zigzag quantum well

Ahmet Türker Tüzemen, Hassen Dakhlaoui, Fatih Ungan

We have examined theoretically how the temperature and the hydrostatic pressure affect the total optical absorption coefficients, the total refractive index changes, and the second harmonic generation coefficients for GaAs/GaAlAs zigzag quantum well structure. The diagonalisation method and the effective mass approximation have been used to obtain the numerical solution of the Schrödinger equation and energy levels, respectively. The analytical expressions of the optical properties were obtained by using the compact density matrix and iterative methods. When the temperature (hydrostatic pressure) is increased, the resonant peaks’ positions of the total optical absorption coefficients and the relative refractive index changes are shifted to higher energies/blueshift (lower energies/red-shift) with amplitude increment (decrement). Additionally, the resonant peak position of the second harmonic generation coefficient shifts to higher energies/blueshift (lower energies) and also decrease (increase) in magnitude with increasing temperature (hydrostatic pressure).

The functionality of the external electric and magnetic field on optical specifications of Rosen–Morse quantum well

Fatih Ungan, Mustafa Kemal Bahar

Abstract In this study, for the first time, we probe the influences of the external electric and magnetic field (EF and MF) on the total refractive index changes (TRICs) and the total absorption coefficients (TACs) of quantum well (QW) with the Rosen–Morse (RM) potential confinement constituting by GaAs/GaAlAs heterostructure. To do this, the bound state energies and the wave functions of the Rosen–Morse quantum well (RMQW) under the influence of the external EF and MF are determined by solving the corresponding wave equation using the diagonalization method within the framework of the effective mass approach and the parabolic band approximation. As the purpose of the present work is to find out the functionality of the external EF and MF on TRICs and TACs of RMQW, same RMQW with V 1 = 250 meV, V 2 = 228 meV, η = 0.01 cm −1 is taken into consideration throughout the work. The TRICs and TACs of RMQW in the weak and strong regimes of the external fields are discussed in detail. The present work introduces to researches that how to and in what regimes apply the EF and MFs to be considered in devices designs and applications including RMQW.
