Fractional Chern insulator with higher Chern number in optical lattice

Ding, Ying-Xing, Li, Wen-Tong, Zhang, Li-Min +4 more

Fractional Chern insulators arise in topologically nontrivial flat bands, characterized by an integer Chern number C that corresponds to the number of dissipationless edge states in the non-interacting regime. Higher Chern numbers can replicate the physics of higher Landau levels and often confer enhanced topological robustness. However, realizing correlated fractional phases with higher Chern numbers in such flat band systems remains challenging. Here, we propose an interlayer coupling scheme to generate higher Chern numbers in a flat-band system, where the interlayer coupling transforms two C = 1 bands in a bilayer checkerboard lattice into a single flat band with C = 2 by lifting their degeneracy and merging their topological indices. Exact diagonalization calculation reveals that this engineered band hosts two fractional Chern insulator states with C = 2/3 and 2/5, respectively. An experimental setup is proposed to simulate these states using cold alkaline-earth-like atoms in an effective bilayer optical lattice. Our work provides a general and widely applicable strategy for constructing higher Chern number flat bands, opening a pathway to explore exotic fractional quantum phases.

Topological phase transitions and flat bands on an islamic lattice

Xu‐Hui Yan, Lu Qi, Xiuyun Zhang +2 more

We construct an islamic lattice by considering the nearest-neighbor (NN) hoppings with staggered magnetic fluxes and the next-NN hoppings. This model supports abundant quantum phases for various values of filling fractions. At1/4filling, Chern insulator (CI) phases with Chern numbersC=±1, -2and a zero-Chern-number topological insulator (ZCNTI) phase exist. At3/8filling, several CI phases with Chern numbersC=±1, 3and the ZCNTI phase are obtained. For the filling fraction 3/4, CI phases with Chern numbersC=±1, 2and two ZCNTI phase areas appear. Interestingly, these ZCNTI phases host both robust corner states and gapless edge states which can be characterized by the quantized polarization and quadrupole moment. We further find that staggered magnetic fluxes can give rise to the ZCNTI state at1/4and3/4fillings. Phase diagrams for filling fractions1/8,1/2,5/8and7/8are presented as well. In addition, flat bands are obtained for various filling fractions by tuning the hopping parameters. At 1/8 filling, a best topological flat band (TFB) with flatness ratio about 12 appears. Several trivial flat bands but with total Chern number|C|=1emerge in this model and exactly flat band is found at 3/8 filling. We further investigateν=1/2fractional Chern insulate state when hard-core bosons fill into this TFB model.

Interacting bosons in topological optical flux lattices

Antoine Sterdyniak, Bogdan Andrei Bernevig, Nigel R. Cooper +1 more

An interesting route to the realization of topological Chern bands in ultracold atomic gases is through the use of optical flux lattices. These models differ from the tight-binding real-space lattice models of Chern insulators that are conventionally studied in solid-state contexts. Instead, they involve the coherent coupling of internal atomic (spin) states, and can be viewed as tight-binding models in reciprocal space. By changing the form of the coupling and the number $N$ of internal spin states, they give rise to Chern bands with controllable Chern number and with nearly flat energy dispersion. We investigate in detail how interactions between bosons occupying these bands can lead to the emergence of fractional quantum Hall states, such as the Laughlin and Moore-Read states. In order to test the experimental realization of these phases, we study their stability with respect to band dispersion and band mixing. We also probe interesting topological phases that emerge in these systems when the Chern number is greater than 1.
