DHR Superselection Structure from the MEG Axioms and the Completion of the Born Rule Dissolution

Abstract

The four axioms of Modular Entropic Gravity (MEG) implicitly contain the Doplicher–Haag–Roberts (DHR) superselection structure of algebraic quantum field theory. This paper establishes the result through a four-link chain: Axiom 1 (modular Hamiltonians of local regions) commits the theory to the Haag–Kastler framework; Axiom 3 (Bisognano–Wichmann and the PLES functional) provides a mass gap with exponential clustering; Axiom 2 (JLMS) restricts physical states to a class satisfying the Buchholz–Fredenhagen exponential localisation criterion, as proved for an explicitly defined admissible state class with bounded modular energy; and the DHR theorem then implies superselection sectors labelled by representations of a compact group, with block decomposition of regional operator algebras and block-diagonal admissible states. The paper demonstrates that this result has consequences beyond the gauge theory application for which it was first identified in the MEG programme (Zenodo DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.19635025). Specifically, it completes the Born rule dissolution established in the companion paper on convex field representations (Zenodo DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.19600153). That paper showed that within a single superselection sector, the Born rule is not a separate measurement postulate but a structural feature of the convex entropy field representation. What it could not address was the origin of the sector structure itself. The DHR superselection structure answers three questions left open by the Born rule paper, all from the axioms alone. First, why do sectors exist? — because the DHR theorem reconstructs them from the Haag–Kastler framework with mass gap and exponential localisation. Second, why are cross-sector superpositions forbidden? — because JLMS-admissible states are block-diagonal, a theorem of the DHR framework rather than a postulate. Third, why are cross-sector branches distinguishable? — because states in distinct sectors carry different quantum numbers under the DHR group, forcing their entropy field configurations to differ. The synthesis gives the Born rule and superselection structure from the MEG axioms: the sector decomposition from DHR (this paper), the Born rule within each sector from the convex dissolution (companion paper), and the absence of cross-sector interference from the block-diagonal constraint. No independent probability postulate is required.x

Quantum Mechanics as Emergent Structure: Deriving the Postulates of Quantum Theory from Modular Entropic Gravity

Patrick Devlin

The postulates of quantum mechanics — complex Hilbert space structure, unitary evolution, the Born rule, definite measurement outcomes, the canonical commutation relations, and the Pauli exclusion principle — have traditionally been taken as axioms. In this work we show that, within the framework of Modular Entropic Gravity (MEG), these structures admit a unified derivation from four geometric axioms governing the informational structure of the quantum vacuum. The framework is non-circular: its inputs are operator-algebraic structures of quantum field theory — including modular Hamiltonians, the JLMS identity, and the Bisognano–Wichmann theorem — which are defined independently of any probability interpretation. The probabilistic and dynamical rules of textbook quantum mechanics then arise as an infrared effective description of this underlying structure. The six results are obtained in logical order: (Q1) the emergence of complex structure from the entropion mass gap; (Q2) the L2 Hilbert space and Schrödinger equation from the long-wavelength limit of the vacuum propagator; (Q3) the Born rule from a relative entropy identity combined with the PLES–Petz correspondence; (Q4) definite measurement outcomes from PLES boundary conditions imposed by classical apparatus; (Q5) the canonical commutation relations from modular flow via the Bisognano–Wichmann and Araki reconstruction; and (Q6) the Pauli exclusion principle from the Z3 topological structure of the MEG vacuum.Three of these results (Q1, Q2, Q5) are established as complete theorems within the framework. The remaining three (Q3, Q4, Q6) are structurally complete derivations in which the underlying mechanism is fully identified, and any remaining conditions concern either formal infinite-dimensional extension or quantitative refinement. The paper therefore presents a coherent and non-circular programme in which the postulates of quantum mechanics are reconstructed from a smaller set of underlying principles, together with an explicit account of the remaining technical steps required for complete formalisation.

Convex Field Representations and the Born Rule: Why Measurement Probability is Not a Separate Postulate in Modular Entropic Gravity

Patrick Devlin

The Born rule — the identification of measurement probability with the squared modulus of quantum amplitudes — has resisted derivation from deeper principles for a century. Every attempt within the Hilbert space framework faces the same structural obstacle: complex amplitudes and real probabilities are different kinds of mathematical objects, and connecting them requires either a new postulate or a covert assumption that smuggles in the probability structure being derived. We argue that in Modular Entropic Gravity (MEG), this obstacle does not arise. The MEG state-to-field map (Axiom 1) sends any quantum mixture ρ = |α|2ρA + |β|2ρB with orthogonal branches to the entropy field configuration Sρ = |α|2SA + |β|2SB . The Born weights |α|2 and |β|2 appear directly as convex coefficients of a real field decomposition — not as complex amplitudes requiring conversion. The factorisation of the measurement map through the coarse-graining channel (established in prior work) guarantees that measurement outcomes respect this convex structure, and we prove a readout faithfulness propositionestablishing that an unbiased branch-resolving apparatus produces outcome frequencies equal to the convex coefficients. The traditional Born rule problem — how do complex amplitudes become real probabilities? — is not answered in MEG. It is rendered unnecessary. In a framework where the physical description is a real entropy field whose branch decomposition carries the Born weights as mixture fractions, the amplitude-to-probability conversion is not a measurement postulate but a feature of the representation change from Hilbert space to entropy field. We directly confront the objection that this merely relocates the Born rule into the density matrix, and show that the relocation changes its logical status: from a postulate connecting two categorically different mathematical objects to an inherited structural property of the physical state representation. The information-geometric results of the MEG programme — the Petz recovery fidelity F 2 = |α|2 and the PLES–Petz equilibrium coincidence — are reinterpreted as independent confirmations of the consistency of this convex structure.

From Entanglement Bootstrap to DHR Theory

Kohtaro Kato, Yoshiko Ogata

We establish a direct connection between the entanglement bootstrap and the Doplicher--Haag--Roberts theory of superselection sectors for two-dimensional quantum spin systems. Under the entanglement-bootstrap assumptions, we prove Haag duality and establish a one-to-one correspondence between simple entanglement-bootstrap anyon types and irreducible superselection sectors. For each fusion channel, we further construct an affine bijection from density matrices on the entanglement-bootstrap fusion space to normalized positive intertwiners in the corresponding operator-algebraic fusion channel. These results connect the entropic and operator-algebraic descriptions of anyons directly, without passing through exactly solvable lattice models.

The Identification of a Viable Ontology for Quantum Mechanics: A Self-Consistent Framework in Which the Postulates of Quantum Theory Are Derived and Its Mysteries Dissolved

Patrick Devlin

For a century, the postulates of quantum mechanics have been taken as irreducible axioms. Bohr, von Neumann, and Feynman each concluded that asking for physical mechanisms underlying the Born rule, wavefunction collapse, or the Pauli exclusion principle constitutes a category error. This consensus was never proved — it was an inference from the failure ofknown attempts. This paper challenges that consensus by exhibiting a candidate framework — Modular Entropic Gravity (MEG) — built on four geometric axioms, in which the six foundational postulates of quantum mechanics are derived consequences and the five standard mysteries of quantum theory have precise physical explanations reducible to classical mechanisms. We make a precise logical claim, not an empirical one. We do not assert that MEG is the correct final theory. We assert that it is internally consistent: its derivations are valid within the framework, no quantum postulate appears as a hidden input, and the programme is non-circular in a precise sense — it derives the probabilistic and interpretive postulates of textbook quantum mechanics from a deeper operator-algebraic level plus the MEG axioms.Several derivations have open steps, all identified explicitly. These concern the technical completion of MEG as a specific theory and do not affect the existence argument: a frame-work of this kind demonstrably can be constructed, as MEG shows. Whether MEG is the correct such framework is an empirical question. That a coherent framework of this kind exists is established here.

Quantum Records, Definite Outcomes, and the Born Rule from Finite Accessibility - The Measurement Completion of the Operational Framework

Paul Cooney

Papers I and II derived gravitational geometry and second-order dynamics from finite accessibility without invoking measurement, observation protocols, or collapse as primitive notions. This paper extends the operational program to the measurement sector, deriving the structure of record formation and probabilistic weights from the same finite accessibility and compositional constraints. Finite accessibility restricts admissible operations on a subsystem to a proper operator subalgebra. Because bounded certification excludes operators requiring nonlocal coordination or arbitrarily fine phase resolution, the accessible algebra is strictly smaller than the full operator algebra. When a system becomes correlated with orthogonal environment sectors, off-diagonal operators between those sectors fall outside the accessible algebra. The reduced state is therefore indistinguishable, under all admissible operations, from its diagonal ensemble. Definiteness emerges as an algebraic consequence of sector restriction, not as a collapse postulate. The weights of these sectors are fixed uniquely by compositional consistency. Phase invariance, multiplicativity under independent refinement, and stability under record coarse-graining constrain any admissible assignment of sector weights to satisfy a functional equation whose only continuous, non-contextual solution is quadratic in amplitude. The Born rule therefore arises as the unique invariant measure compatible with finite accessibility. Irreversibility follows from action scaling: reversal requires operators outside the admissible tensor algebra and incurs action cost proportional to the number of correlated subsystems. Since admissible operations are bounded by the action gap, macroscopic record reversal is excluded. Measurement introduces no new physical primitives beyond finite accessibility, locality, and compositional stability. Record formation, classical definiteness, and Born probabilities are structural consequences of algebraic restriction under finite accessibility. **This paper is part of the Finite Accessibility series, which reconstructs gravitational geometry, quantum dynamics, gauge structure, cosmological perturbation theory, and the dark sector from a single operational primitive: a finite certification ceiling ω* governing the maximum rate at which physical relations can be maintained across extended domains.** **Introductory papers** - Geometric Limits to Coherent Timekeeping in Extended Reference Frames — https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.18824556 - Accessibility Selection Law (ASL) — https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.18824649 - Phase Boundary Gravity — https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.18824707 **Pillars (numbered I–IV)** - Paper I: Deriving Gravitational Geometry and Schrödinger Dynamics from Finite Accessibility — https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.18601600 - Paper II: Deriving Inertia, Motion, and Wave Propagation from Finite Accessibility — https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.18625174 - Paper III: Accessible State Spaces, Record Stability, and the Emergence of Quantum Statistics — https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.18625192 - Paper IV: Frame Dissolution, the Certification Ceiling, and Observable Deformations — https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.18654458 **Extension papers** - Dark Matter from Finite Accessibility — https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.18654433 - Dark Energy from Finite Accessibility — https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.18654523 - No-Go Theorems and the Admissibility Corridor — https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.18654493 - Gauge Structure from Finite Accessibility — https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.18928152 - Perturbation Theory from Finite Accessibility — https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.18928213 **Experimental paper** - Experimental Probes of Finite Accessibility: GW Dispersion and Vacuum Path Independence — https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.18931126 **Keywords:** Born rule derivation, measurement problem, quantum statistics, finite accessibility, operator subalgebra, record formation, definiteness emergence, wave function collapse, compositional consistency, accessible state spaces, action gap, irreversibility, sector restriction, quantum foundations, algebraic quantum mechanics, decoherence

Formal Supplement: End-to-End Derivation from Finite Enforcement Capacity to Quantum Structure

Duplicate record. The canonical deposit for this paper is APF Paper 1 — The Enforceability of Distinction (Technical Supplement) (DOI 10.5281/zenodo.19714957). This record is retained because published Zenodo DOIs cannot be removed; please cite the canonical record. Title: Formal Supplement: End-to-End Derivation from Finite Enforcement Capacity to Quantum Structure Authors: Brooke, E. S. Description: Self-contained formal supplement to "The Enforceability of Distinction: Quantum Structure from Finite Enforcement Capacity" (Paper 1 of the Admissibility Physics Framework series). Derives finite-dimensional quantum mechanical structure — Hilbert space, C*-algebra, Born rule, Tsirelson bound, no-broadcasting — from a single resource-theoretic axiom (A1: finite enforcement capacity), one regularity condition (MD: uniform per-test cost floor), one richness premise (BW: budget-window triple), and constitutive admissibility semantics (SP, K3, FD1–FD6). The derivation proceeds in three tiers. The core chain (A1 + MD + BW + constitutive semantics) produces: a finite-dimensional real vector space with sector decomposition, a sector-orthogonal bilinear form forced by disjoint-support additivity (K3), self-adjoint enforcement projections, superadditive joint enforcement costs, a noncommutative real *-algebra, Wedderburn–Artin block decomposition, a GNS Hilbert-space representation, and a faithful positive state constructed from enforcement data. Field selection excludes real nonclassical blocks via state-separation completeness (T2c.1, single-interface, proved) and quaternionic blocks via composition closure (T2c.2, multi-interface, conditional). Standard quantum corollaries — Born rule (via Busch's generalized Gleason theorem), Tsirelson bound (via the Cirel'son identity), monogamy, and no-broadcasting — follow within the derived algebraic skeleton. Key features: (1) explicit variational framework for joint enforcement, including admissible defender class, projection reduction lemma, Grassmannian existence proof, and a theorem that all optimal joint defenders have nontrivial pool support when the superadditivity surplus is positive; (2) formal equivalence between nontrivial pool-supported joint threats, superadditive enforcement cost, and algebraic noncommutativity; (3) a fully explicit 11-step qubit model computing every quantity from enforcement costs through Born probabilities; (4) named support-recruitment monotonicity principle (SRM) separating structural from physical selection of orthogonal projections; (5) explicit computable stability thresholds for Wedderburn block structure and field type under approximate disjoint-support additivity; (6) front-matter tables classifying every result as unconditional, conditional, or dependent on external theorems. 71 pages.

Derives finite-dimensional quantum mechanical structure — Hilbert space, C*-algebra, Born rule, Tsirelson bound, no-broadcasting — from a single resource-theoretic axiom (A1: finite enforcement capacity), one regularity condition (MD: uniform per-test cost floor), one richness premise (BW: budget-window triple), and constitutive admissibility semantics (SP, K3, FD1–FD6). The derivation proceeds in three tiers. The core chain (A1 + MD + BW + constitutive semantics) produces: a finite-dimensional real vector space with sector decomposition, a sector-orthogonal bilinear form forced by disjoint-support additivity (K3), self-adjoint enforcement projections, superadditive joint enforcement costs, a noncommutative real *-algebra, Wedderburn–Artin block decomposition, a GNS Hilbert-space representation, and a faithful positive state constructed from enforcement data. Field selection excludes real nonclassical blocks via state-separation completeness (T2c.1, single-interface, proved) and quaternionic blocks via composition closure (T2c.2, multi-interface, conditional). Standard quantum corollaries — Born rule (via Busch's generalized Gleason theorem), Tsirelson bound (via the Cirel'son identity), monogamy, and no-broadcasting — follow within the derived algebraic skeleton. Key features: (1) explicit variational framework for joint enforcement, including admissible defender class, projection reduction lemma, Grassmannian existence proof, and a theorem that all optimal joint defenders have nontrivial pool support when the superadditivity surplus is positive; (2) formal equivalence between nontrivial pool-supported joint threats, superadditive enforcement cost, and algebraic noncommutativity; (3) a fully explicit 11-step qubit model computing every quantity from enforcement costs through Born probabilities; (4) named support-recruitment monotonicity principle (SRM) separating structural from physical selection of orthogonal projections; (5) explicit computable stability thresholds for Wedderburn block structure and field type under approximate disjoint-support additivity; (6) front-matter tables classifying every result as unconditional, conditional, or dependent on external theorems. 71 pages. Three parts: Part I (Core Derivation, §1–7), Part II (Worked Examples and Detailed Verifications, §8–12), Part III (Discussion, Comparisons, and Scope, §13–14). No companion paper result is assumed. Admissibility Physics derives the Standard Model gauge group, fermion content, quantum formalism, Lorentzian spacetime, the Einstein field equations, the cosmological constant, and the neutrino, strong-CP, and dark sectors from a single assumption — that enforcement is finite at every causally connected region — with zero free parameters. The core derivation runs Papers 0–11; the extension papers carry the individual sectors. Each paper's main text and Technical Supplement is deposited separately, and every quantitative claim traces to a named, executable check in the public theorem bank (over 3,800 bank-registered theorems across roughly 450 modules, 48 quantitative predictions).
