The Wrong Square Root: i as Consequence of Golden Chirality, and the Born Rule over ℝ(√5)

Abstract

The imaginary unit i = √(−1) enters quantum mechanics as a foundational assumption: wavefunctions are complex, evolution is unitary over ℂ, and the Born rule uses the circular norm |ψ|². We show that i is not a foundation but a consequence — specifically, the eigenvalue direction of the adjoint golden gamma matrix Γ_adj relative to the seed Γ_seed, constructed in companion Paper 191. A single sign flip in a 2×2 matrix over ℤ[φ] rotates the eigenvalue spectrum from the real axis to the imaginary axis. Traversing the golden split φ ↔ ψ in one direction produces real eigenvalues ±5^(1/4); in the reverse direction, imaginary eigenvalues ±i·5^(1/4). From this identification, the Born rule is reconstructed over ℝ(√5) without assuming ℂ. Complex conjugation is the chirality flip Γ_seed ↔ Γ_adj — a geometric operation derived from the algebra, not an algebraic assumption. Positivity of the Born rule is not an additional axiom and is not, as earlier drafts claimed, an immediate consequence of the chirality flip: it is restriction to the forward cone of the indefinite Galois norm N(a) = p² − 5q² on ℝ(√5), an object with signature (+,−) whose hyperbolic-plane structure the standard positive-definite Hilbert space cannot host. The normalization condition ⟨ψ_seed|ψ_adj⟩ = √5 is derived from the chiral coupling Γ_seed·Γ_adj = √5·σ₃ (machine-verified). The measurement problem dissolves: measurement is the round trip through the golden conjugation, reading a topological invariant without disturbing a topological state. No collapse is required. Standard QM is recovered as the special case in which the adjoint amplitude equals the complex conjugate of the seed amplitude. A new §11 resolves the (2,2)→(1,3) selection: the excluded timelike direction is the right-handed neutrino, and parity violation is the crystallisation closure choice at t=0. Whether the indefinite norm N connects causally to the indefinite form appearing in the Dedekind factorisation of ζ_{ℚ(√5)} is explicitly left open; an earlier attempt to identify Riemann zeros with the null locus of N failed numerical adversarial review and the correct coordinate map, if any, is deferred to future work.

Quantum Mechanics as the Arithmetic of A Single Polynomial

Stephanie Alexander

Dirac called the imaginary unit in the Schrödinger equation the deepest thing in quantum mechanics, and admitted he did not understand it. This note offers a candidate: i is the complex place of a single number — Q, the real root of x⁴ − x − 1 — and the strangeness of quantum mechanics is the strangeness of that one number's arithmetic, seen from the inside. For a century quantum theory has been taught as a list of postulates — complex amplitudes, a Born rule, unitary evolution, a dagger — accepted because they work and never because they are understood. Grant a single identification, that the state space of a quantum system is the complex place of Q's field, and those postulates stop being assumptions. They become theorems. The imaginary unit is the field's complex structure; the dagger is Galois conjugation; observables are real because they are Galois-fixed; unitary evolution is the field's unit circle; and the Born rule — the squared modulus, long the least-explained law in physics — is the field's own norm, made unique by Gleason's theorem. Time reversal and charge conjugation appear as named elements of the Galois group S₄, the Weyl group of su(4). And a proved theorem locates the classical/quantum boundary precisely: in the family xⁿ − x − 1 the root is Pisot — its powers settle, its world definite — only through three dimensions, and at the fourth that settling fails. That, on the reading proposed here, is where the classical world ends and the quantum world begins. The dozen postulates of the physics textbooks are thus compressed to one here, named plainly as a posit, with every claim labeled at its evidential tier and the composition of many systems left as the open edge. It is not a metaphor and not a fit. Quantum Mechanics is the arithmetic of a single number — and, at last, a single thing to be right or wrong about.

Forcing The Born Rule From Non-Separability

Jonathan Aponte

From a single axiom — that outcomes form one non-separable whole — two consequences fix the quantum state space: a possibility can differ from another in exactly two ways, by magnitude (how much) and by phase (from where). A quantity carrying both is a complex number. On this space, non-separability forces completion by the conjugate, the squared-magnitude weight, linearity, normalization, and the interference cross-term, yielding the Born rule p_i = |ψ_i|² with Σp_i = 1 and interference. The algebraic steps are machine-verified (script included); the structural steps are stated as named claims with every open seam labeled honestly. Hermiticity of observables (A = A†) is argued and machine-verified for the real-weighted case rather than assumed. The derivation presupposes no Hilbert space, inner product, probability measure, or operational structure, and reaches the same targets that existing reconstructions obtain from five or six axioms. Submitted for refutation. The theorem of Section 7B is unchanged, and its proof does not depend on check A10 — it runs on Lemmas 2 and 4 and A1. Check A10 in verify_all.py was defective. It tested whether the product ψ·X is real, rather than whether X completes ψ. Consequently it accepted the sign flip, a partner that A1 explicitly excludes as degree-negating. The check could not fail. A10 is replaced with an exact test of A1’s criterion — that a completer removes vantage while preserving degree — which has the unique solution X = conj(ψ), and which rejects both the sign flip and any neighbouring pole. Two sentences describing A10 (Sections 6 and 7B) stated that a pole multiplied by a neighbour “still carries vantage.” This is false: the product m²e^(−iδ) is vantage-free but does not complete. Both sentences are corrected. This version also revises Lemma 3 to the operator-level criterion, removes the section on Hardy’s Simplicity axiom as superseded by Masanes–Müller (2011), addresses the direct-sum counterexample to Seam 7, and adds eleven references.

The Born Rule from S² Geometry: Three Independent Routes to P = |⟨φ|ψ⟩|², with Geometric Resolution of Schrödinger's Cat, the Three-Polariser Paradox, the Tsirelson Bound, and the Cosmological Decoherence Floor

C. R. (René) de Haan

The Born rule — that the probability of obtaining outcome |phi> in a measurement of a quantum system in state |psi> is P = |<phi|psi>|^2 — is one of the most empirically well-confirmed and conceptually contested statements in physics. Existing derivation attempts (Gleason’s theorem; Deutsch–Wallace decision theory; Zurek envariance; many-worlds branch counting) each establish it under their own assumptions, but none has achieved universal acceptance. We show that in the Three Time Dimensions (3+3) spacetime framework (de Haan 2026, book DOI 10.5281/zenodo.19633127), in which the third time dimension t_3 is compactified as a discrete two-sphere S^2 with 2^152 Planck-area cells, the Born rule emerges through three independent geometric routes that all converge on the same result P = |<phi|psi>|^2. Route 1 (Malus’s Law on S^2): the wavefunction is literally a direction on the t_3 S^2; the Bloch sphere IS this S^2; Malus’s 1809 law P = cos^2(theta) is identical to the Born rule for bosons, with SU(2) double cover giving cos^2(theta/2) for fermions. Route 2 (Gleason + S^2 non-contextuality): Gleason’s 1957 theorem uniquely selects |<phi|psi>|^2 given non-contextuality, which in (3+3) is a consequence of the S^2 Riemannian metric rather than an independent postulate. Route 3 (Lévy measure + t_2 isotropy): the t_2 expansion perturbs all t_3 directions isotropically; the unique continuous binary-outcome probability measure is the Lévy / Haar-invariant spherical measure, which gives P(+n_A) = cos^2(theta/2). The three routes use distinct mathematical tools (projection, Hilbert-space theorem, stochastic analysis) and distinct physical inputs (geometry, Riemannian metric, dynamical isotropy). They must converge if the geometric identification is correct; they would diverge if it were wrong. Malus’s 1809 law is the Born rule avant la lettre. The empirical optical law taught to undergraduates as a fact is, under this reading, a direct geometric consequence of photon polarisations being directions on S^2 — a statement about projection geometry that predates quantum mechanics by a century. The same geometric identification simultaneously resolves four foundational puzzles: (1) Schrödinger’s cat is never in superposition (the cat’s ~10^29 t_3 modes are entrained by environmental t_2 perturbation within femtoseconds of the first atomic interaction); (2) the three-polariser paradox dissolves (non-commuting measurements are non-commuting rotations on S^2); (3) the Bell/Tsirelson bound 2sqrt(2) is a geometric consequence of S^2 having dimension exactly 2 — empirical confirmation by loophole-free Bell tests (Hensen, Giustina, Shalm 2015) confirms the S^2 identification; (4) the cosmological decoherence floor tau_cosm = 1/H_0 ~ 14.5 Gyr is a structural upper bound on quantum coherence set by the t_2 cosmic expansion — distinguishing the framework from many-worlds interpretations. Three supporting elegance claims establish the framework’s quantum-foundational coherence: (A) the complex-valuedness of psi in C follows from t_2 being a rotation (the imaginary unit i is the generator of the t_2 precession rotation); (B) the Schrödinger equation i hbar dpsi/dt = H psi is the infinitesimal form of t_2 precession rotating the phase of the t_3 configuration; (C) the canonical commutation [x, p] = i hbar follows from the foam lattice structure. The paper is complementary to the companion Quantum Computing preprint [DOI 10.5281/zenodo.19651560] which uses the Bloch-sphere-as-S^2 identification for applied hardware-level proposals. The Born Rule paper provides the foundational underpinning for why that identification is correct at the level of quantum-mechanical first principles. The paper is honest about what remains open. Four specific items are explicitly acknowledged (§11): (1) the framework does not yet have a 6D Lagrangian formulation from which the Born rule would fall out of path-integral quantisation; (2) the uniqueness of the S^2 identification is only partially addressed — higher-dimensional spheres are ruled out by the Tsirelson bound, but tori and Calabi–Yau alternatives are not examined; (3) the path-integral reformulation of quantum mechanics within (3+3) has not been constructed; (4) detailed comparison with QBism, relational quantum mechanics, and consistent histories is outside the paper’s scope. Falsifiability. Six routes: Tsirelson-bound overshoot/undershoot beyond 2sqrt(2) + measurement precision; indefinite quantum coherence beyond cosmological timescales; real-valued QM experimental confirmation (already ruled out by Renou et al. 2021, reconfirmed by independent tests); detection of genuine contextuality; detection of discrete S^2 cell structure at near-Planck scales. The Born rule, in (3+3), is not a mysterious postulate; it is Malus’s Law on a compact sphere that nobody knew was there.

Real-commutant phase selection from real Hilbert representations

Mohamed Haj Yousef

Complex Hilbert space is usually assumed at the start of quantum mechanics. This paper formulates a reverse construction for the one-particle and operator-algebraic setting. Starting from a real Hilbert space carrying an orthogonal representation, the admissible imaginary units are identified with the skew-adjoint square roots of − Id in the Real commutant of the complexified representation. The novelty is not the isolated use of complexification, spectral orientation, or polar decomposition, but their order of dependence: first the symmetry representation defines an intrinsic operator-valued phase space; then an oriented internal time flow selects a distinguished point of that phase space; only afterward are the usual complex one-particle, observable, probability, and Weyl–CCR structures invoked under their standard hypotheses. In the terminology used here, this oriented internal flow is the reversible or inner-generative side of a dual-time distinction. It is not a second observer clock and not an additional Lorentzian coordinate: mathematically it is the strongly continuous orthogonal group U ( t ) = exp ( t A ) on the real Hilbert space. Its Stone-dual variable is energy/frequency λ ; canonical conjugation pairs λ with − λ ; positive energy orients this pair and selects the canonical phase on the dynamic sector through A = J | A | = | A | J . Thus inner-generative time is the source of phase orientation, while irreversible record time, projection, memory, and decoherence enter only as later reduced-dynamics layers. No spectral gap at zero is required, and zero modes remain visible as residual phase data rather than being hidden by the construction. The selected phase is invariant under time-orientation-preserving symmetries and changes sign under time reversal, giving the usual antiunitary action after complex reconstruction. The paper also makes explicit the monoidal limitation: two selected local phases do not make the raw real tensor product the standard composite system; the standard composite is recovered only after imposing the J -balanced, equivalently complex, tensor product rule. Thus the result is a reconstruction of compatible complex kinematics on the selected one-particle/operator-algebraic sector, not a derivation of all quantum foundations from purely real data.

One Is the Circle: The Geometric Mechanism of Born Closure Reciprocal Spiral Compactification, Quadratic Unity, and Intrinsic Event Admissibility

Eric Needham

This paper presents an exact geometric mechanism for the complex conjugation, quadratic norm, and unity structure underlying Born probability. The paper does not claim a complete derivation of quantum measurement or of the occurrence of one individual outcome. Its central result is an exact geometric mechanism for the conjugation, quadratic weighting, normalization, and orthogonal-closure structure on which the Born rule depends. A supplementary Python script symbolically and numerically verifies seventeen central identities and test cases, including reciprocal invariance, phase compactification, golden calibration, quadratic weighting, projector closure, generalized measurement normalization, interference, and unitary norm preservation. The ZTD Physical Mapping of the Mathematical Structure of Quantum Mechanics — A Conceptual Framework Paper —

Yan Zhuang

Quantum mechanics has achieved unparalleled mathematical success, but has left a seriesof black boxes at the level of physical pictures: What does it mean that state vectors livein a complex Hilbert space? Why does the imaginary unit i appear? Where does thecommutation relation [ ˆX , ˆp] = iℏ come from? Why does measurement cause collapse? Whydoes the Born rule hold?In this paper, within the framework of ZTD (Marker Ontology), we provide physicalontological interpretations for every mathematical object of quantum mechanics. The positioning of this paper must first be made clear: this is a conceptual frameworkpaper, not a complete mathematical derivation. The goal of this paper is to establisha mapping relationship between the ZTD physical picture and the mathematical structure ofquantum mechanics. For each item in the list, rigorous mathematical argumentation needsto be gradually developed in subsequent work. Among the mathematical derivations givenin this paper, some are already rigorous (such as the discrete derivation of the commutationrelation), some are still conceptual (such as the derivation of the Born rule), and some carrycircularity risks (such as the borrowing of the Fermi golden rule for the Born rule). Theseare honestly marked in the text. The core mappings include:1. Complex Hilbert space corresponds to the complex amplitude space on the primitivenetwork;2. State vectors are the mathematical generalization of diffuse patterns;3. The wave function is the physical distribution of the diffuse pattern on the primitivenetwork;4. The imaginary unit i is the phase encoding of step counting;5. The commutation relation is the continuum limit of the discrete adjacency matrix;6. Unitary evolution is the pattern maintaining itself;7. Measurement is the capture of the diffuse pattern by an atom;8. The Born rule is the statistical result of capture;9. Quantum entanglement is the sharing of the same birth event;10. The uncertainty principle is a necessary consequence of spatial discreteness. This paper does not invent new mathematics, nor does it propose new testable predictions. Its goal is: to turn quantum mechanics from “mathematical mechanics” backinto “physical mechanics.”Keywords: quantum mechanics; mathematical structure; physical mapping; ontology; diffusepattern; unitary evolution; ZTD theory
