Abstract

The Born rule — that the probability of obtaining outcome |phi> in a measurement of a quantum system in state |psi> is P = |<phi|psi>|^2 — is one of the most empirically well-confirmed and conceptually contested statements in physics. Existing derivation attempts (Gleason’s theorem; Deutsch–Wallace decision theory; Zurek envariance; many-worlds branch counting) each establish it under their own assumptions, but none has achieved universal acceptance. We show that in the Three Time Dimensions (3+3) spacetime framework (de Haan 2026, book DOI 10.5281/zenodo.19633127), in which the third time dimension t_3 is compactified as a discrete two-sphere S^2 with 2^152 Planck-area cells, the Born rule emerges through three independent geometric routes that all converge on the same result P = |<phi|psi>|^2. Route 1 (Malus’s Law on S^2): the wavefunction is literally a direction on the t_3 S^2; the Bloch sphere IS this S^2; Malus’s 1809 law P = cos^2(theta) is identical to the Born rule for bosons, with SU(2) double cover giving cos^2(theta/2) for fermions. Route 2 (Gleason + S^2 non-contextuality): Gleason’s 1957 theorem uniquely selects |<phi|psi>|^2 given non-contextuality, which in (3+3) is a consequence of the S^2 Riemannian metric rather than an independent postulate. Route 3 (Lévy measure + t_2 isotropy): the t_2 expansion perturbs all t_3 directions isotropically; the unique continuous binary-outcome probability measure is the Lévy / Haar-invariant spherical measure, which gives P(+n_A) = cos^2(theta/2). The three routes use distinct mathematical tools (projection, Hilbert-space theorem, stochastic analysis) and distinct physical inputs (geometry, Riemannian metric, dynamical isotropy). They must converge if the geometric identification is correct; they would diverge if it were wrong. Malus’s 1809 law is the Born rule avant la lettre. The empirical optical law taught to undergraduates as a fact is, under this reading, a direct geometric consequence of photon polarisations being directions on S^2 — a statement about projection geometry that predates quantum mechanics by a century. The same geometric identification simultaneously resolves four foundational puzzles: (1) Schrödinger’s cat is never in superposition (the cat’s ~10^29 t_3 modes are entrained by environmental t_2 perturbation within femtoseconds of the first atomic interaction); (2) the three-polariser paradox dissolves (non-commuting measurements are non-commuting rotations on S^2); (3) the Bell/Tsirelson bound 2sqrt(2) is a geometric consequence of S^2 having dimension exactly 2 — empirical confirmation by loophole-free Bell tests (Hensen, Giustina, Shalm 2015) confirms the S^2 identification; (4) the cosmological decoherence floor tau_cosm = 1/H_0 ~ 14.5 Gyr is a structural upper bound on quantum coherence set by the t_2 cosmic expansion — distinguishing the framework from many-worlds interpretations. Three supporting elegance claims establish the framework’s quantum-foundational coherence: (A) the complex-valuedness of psi in C follows from t_2 being a rotation (the imaginary unit i is the generator of the t_2 precession rotation); (B) the Schrödinger equation i hbar dpsi/dt = H psi is the infinitesimal form of t_2 precession rotating the phase of the t_3 configuration; (C) the canonical commutation [x, p] = i hbar follows from the foam lattice structure. The paper is complementary to the companion Quantum Computing preprint [DOI 10.5281/zenodo.19651560] which uses the Bloch-sphere-as-S^2 identification for applied hardware-level proposals. The Born Rule paper provides the foundational underpinning for why that identification is correct at the level of quantum-mechanical first principles. The paper is honest about what remains open. Four specific items are explicitly acknowledged (§11): (1) the framework does not yet have a 6D Lagrangian formulation from which the Born rule would fall out of path-integral quantisation; (2) the uniqueness of the S^2 identification is only partially addressed — higher-dimensional spheres are ruled out by the Tsirelson bound, but tori and Calabi–Yau alternatives are not examined; (3) the path-integral reformulation of quantum mechanics within (3+3) has not been constructed; (4) detailed comparison with QBism, relational quantum mechanics, and consistent histories is outside the paper’s scope. Falsifiability. Six routes: Tsirelson-bound overshoot/undershoot beyond 2sqrt(2) + measurement precision; indefinite quantum coherence beyond cosmological timescales; real-valued QM experimental confirmation (already ruled out by Renou et al. 2021, reconfirmed by independent tests); detection of genuine contextuality; detection of discrete S^2 cell structure at near-Planck scales. The Born rule, in (3+3), is not a mysterious postulate; it is Malus’s Law on a compact sphere that nobody knew was there.

The Tsirelson Bound as Measurement Geometry of the Existence Equation

Jae-Ahn Shin

Evidence Paper VI of the Existence Equation series. From Born rule to Bell inequality: one observer to two. In the parent work (The Existence Equation), the Born rule P = |Ψ|² is not an axiom but a derived consequence: the condensation term α|Ψ|²Ψ projects the continuous phase of the deviation field onto discrete binary outcomes (±1), and time-averaging the projected phase recovers cos θ correlations — verified by simulation on a 256³ lattice (hydrogen s-orbital, 30,000 steps). The Born rule emerges from the measurement geometry of one observer. If the Born rule for one observer is a consequence of ED's condensation mechanism, then for two observers sharing a single conserved field (Ψ_A + Ψ_B = 0), the Tsirelson bound S = 2√2 follows as pure measurement geometry. The Bell inequality violation is not a separate mystery — it is the natural two-observer extension of the same mechanism that produces the Born rule. Input: 2 items. The "Classical" configuration in the table below has |u| + |v| = 2√2 — the ceiling is fully available — yet achieves only S = 2. What differs is the correlation function. Separable hidden variables produce piecewise-linear correlations. Only cos θ correlations — which ED derives from field conservation, not from Hilbert space — can saturate the ceiling. The structural reading of Bell violation: Standard quantum mechanics treats the Born rule as an axiom and calculates 2√2 through Hilbert space operator norms. The Existence Equation derives the Born rule from condensation, then explains 2√2 as the geometric consequence of applying that same mechanism to two observers sharing a conserved field. The Bell inequality violation is not evidence for non-locality — it is evidence for non-separability of a single conserved deviation field. The Bell inequality violation is not spooky. It is geometric. It measures the diagonal of the binary measurement lattice. Reduction of the Born Rule to a Liouville–Holonomy Equivariance Problem in TS5D

Noel COPINET

What if the Born rule were not a postulate, but a theorem? Since 1926, the Born rule — which assigns probability ∣⟨φ∣ψ⟩∣2|\langle\varphi|\psi\rangle|^2 ∣⟨φ∣ψ⟩∣2 to a quantum measurement outcome — has been imposed as an axiom. No derivation from non-quantum premises is universally accepted: neither Bohm, Nelson, Valentini, nor Deutsch-Wallace has closed the debate. This paper proposes a radically new approach. Within the framework of the **Five-Dimensional Solitonic Theory (TS5D)** — an extended classical theory on the manifold M4×S1/Z6\mathcal{M}^4 \times S^1/\mathbb{Z}_6 M4×S1/Z6 —, we prove that the derivation of Born *reduces* to a hierarchized system of **two precise mathematical locks**: Technical lock: regularization of the Liouville measure on field-theoretic phase space (three routes identified: modal truncation, cylindrical measures, Gaussian regularization). Dynamical lock: Liouville–holonomy equivariance under soliton-apparatus interaction dynamics. If both locks are removed, Gleason's theorem automatically locks in the ∣ψ∣2|\psi|^2 ∣ψ∣2 form. Four partial results structure the program: Emergence of Hermitian structure via Noether U(1)U(1) U(1) — *established*. Identification of the 5D holonomy phase as a geometric hidden variable — structurally established. Preservation of the Liouville measure by Hamiltonian flow — classical. Gleason's theorem applied to the effective Hilbert space — established under conditions. Decisive contribution: Appendix E presents a Bernoulli reference model in which the full chain leading to Born is explicitly proved — strong mixing ⟹ exponential thresholds ⟹ rates Γk∝∣ck∣2\Gamma_k \propto |c_k|^2 Γk∝∣ck∣2 ⟹ pointer competition ⟹ P(k)=∣ck∣2\mathbb{P}(k) = |c_k|^2 P(k)=∣ck∣2. Numerical validation with Monte Carlo error ∼10−3\sim 10^{-3} ∼10−3 over 50,000 samples. Candidate experimental signatures distinguishing TS5D from standard quantum mechanics and from Bohm-Valentini: Topological mass splitting in ratios 13:15:17 2π/62\pi/6 2π/6 periodicity in Bell-type correlations Gaussian decay of CHSH visibility with spectral marking What this work claims to do: transform a vague question — "how does TS5D derive Born?" — into a precise, hierarchized mathematical problem, attackable by the standard tools of functional analysis and ergodic theory. Following Hilbert's tradition of structuring mathematics in 1900, this work proposes a theorematic reduction rather than a closure, and unambiguously identifies the remaining research directions. Compatibility with no-go theorems: Bell (5D geometric exit), Kochen-Specker (natural contextuality), PBR (ontic field in 5D) — all explicitly analyzed.

From Primitives to the Born Rule

Allen Proxmire

Quantum mechanics says that when you measure a system, the probability of an outcome is the squared modulus of that outcome's amplitude — not absolute value, not cubed, not some other power. The exponent has been two since Born wrote it down in 1926, and for a century it has been a postulate. Copenhagen accepts it as a brute fact; Many-Worlds tries to derive it from decision theory; QBism reframes it as Bayesian credence; Zurek derives it from environmental symmetries; Hardy derives it from operational axioms. Each program leaves at least part of the question unanswered: why squared, and not some other exponent? Gleason's 1957 theorem went part of the way: given a few structural conditions on quantum probability assignments, the squared form is mathematically forced. But Gleason leans on one substantive assumption — non-contextuality — that standard QM postulates rather than derives. This walkthrough shows how the Event Density framework derives the Born rule, including the squared exponent *and* the non-contextuality assumption underneath it, from a smaller set of structural commitments about what reality is made of at the substrate level. The chain has three load-bearing steps: (i) the participation measure is forced to the form √b · e^{iπ} via the Cauchy functional equation on bandwidth additivity plus Frobenius's theorem on real division algebras; (ii) the sesquilinear inner product on the participation-measure space is forced, delivering the Hilbert-space structure Gleason operates on; (iii) non-contextuality is forced by the channel-as-primitive ontology. With non-contextuality derived rather than postulated, Gleason–Busch applies directly. The squared exponent is a consequence of the framework, not a separate postulate.

The Born rule from F1/F2 sampling: a physical derivation via Gleason's theorem and environment-assisted invariance

J M Reed

The Born rule — that the probability of obtaining outcome i in a measurement of a quantum system in state |ψ⟩ is given by P(i) = |⟨i|ψ⟩|² — is conventionally introduced as an axiom of quantum mechanics. We present a derivation of the Born rule based on a structural distinction within the substrate-field framework between F1, the unbounded equilibrium configuration of a fundamental scalar field that carries the unitary wave-function dynamics, and F2, the bounded observable configuration that records definite measurement outcomes. F1 → F2 sampling occurs at each Planck-scale time quantum and produces stochastic localization with a probability distribution that, by Gleason's theorem and the non-contextuality of the sampling mechanism, must be of the form Tr(ρ P_i). The squared-modulus form follows. We complement the Gleason argument with Zurek's environment-assisted invariance to address the equal-amplitude case explicitly and discuss the relationship to existing derivations including the decision-theoretic approach of Deutsch and Wallace, the QBist program of Caves, Fuchs, and Schack, and the Bohmian treatment of Dürr, Goldstein, and Zanghì. The contribution of the present argument is to provide a physical mechanism — F1/F2 sampling — that generates probabilities, eliminating the need to postulate them as primitive while retaining the mathematical structure already secured by Gleason's theorem.

The Born Rule from Configurational Stability: A Timeless Derivation

Ilja Schots

The Born rule, assigning probabilities via |ψ|², is traditionally introduced as an independent axiom of quantum mechanics. Despite its empirical success, its foundational origin remains unresolved. In this paper we derive the Born rule as a necessary consequence of configurational stability in a timeless, pre-metric configuration space. Physical states are described by field configurations Φ, weighted by a stability functional S[Φ]. Quantum states ψ arise as representational coordinates encoding relative stability rather than as ontological wave objects. We show that requiring: projective invariance, factorizability for independent subsystems, and classical additivity under phase degradation, uniquely selects the quadratic probability map |ψ|², without assuming Hilbert space structure, Gleason-type theorems, or temporal dynamics. Measurement is identified as a topological transition at a stability threshold Σ*, where the Hessian spectrum becomes marginally stable. This leads to a distinctive, non-analytic “kink” in decoherence behavior. Unlike stochastic collapse models, the framework predicts pure dephasing without energy injection, avoiding existing experimental heating constraints. The theory yields explicit, falsifiable experimental signatures, including structure-dependent decoherence effects in mesoscopic systems, accessible to current matter-wave interferometry and levitated nanosphere experiments. The framework is fully timeless at the fundamental level; laboratory time emerges only as an epistemic ordering parameter. This work is self-contained and does not rely on gravitational, cosmological, or dark-matter assumptions. SAE QM Paper 6 The Born Rule as the Algebraic Projection of Closure / SAE

Han Qin

Full bilingual text and framework available at self-as-an-end.net The Born rule — that the probability of a measurement outcome is given by the modulus squared of the quantum state — is introduced as a postulate in standard quantum mechanics and confirmed by experiment to very high precision, yet the origin of its modulus-squared form has long been a central question in the foundations of quantum mechanics. The major approaches locate this origin in the mathematical uniqueness of Hilbert space (Gleason), the decision-theoretic norms of a rational agent (Deutsch–Wallace), the symmetry of system–environment entanglement (Zurek's envariance), subjective belief (QBism), or hidden variables (Bohmian mechanics). This paper gives an ontological origin for the modulus-squared readout within the Self-as-an-End (SAE) framework. The central claim: the modulus squared is the one-sided reading of a pre-closure state that lies below the causal slot, takes the uncertainty-wave form, and is simultaneously subject to time arrows on both sides — and is therefore without causality. In this region the time arrow and causality are distinct: the time arrow exists at every scale (the quantum evolves forward in our frame, the dynamical layer), whereas causality is the influence of a single-direction time arrow. Above the causal slot the state is subject only to single-direction influence, so causality holds and the outcome is definite; below the causal slot it is subject simultaneously to the our-frame and opposite-frame bidirectional time arrows (two faces of one dual-4DD structure, per Cosmo V), so no single direction can fix causation and there is no causality. A one-sided reading therefore cannot read off pre-written definite content, and presents as a probability distribution (degenerating to a definite P=1 readout for an eigenstate). At the amplitude layer this manifests as the conjugate pairing of dual orientations, ψ♯ψ = A² — the modulus squared. The paper works at three commitment levels: T1 (Gleason-type mathematical uniqueness, taken over externally), T2 (a strong structural derivation of the quadratic readout, the core contribution — not a full Gleason-equivalent theorem), and T3 (an ontological mechanism picture, offered as a candidate). It answers why the both-sided reading is multiplicative rather than additive: reciprocity prescribes that one side close with its dual in the native algebra of the object read — a scalar density closes additively (Λ₁+Λ₂=0), a complex phase carrier multiplicatively (ψ♯ψ=A²); the two substrates are isomorphic (both θ+θ♯=0), the microscopic one wearing one coat of exponential dualization. On this basis it places Born randomness (no pre-written content; weights from dual-orientation pairing), demarcates SAE from Gleason, Many-Worlds (via a causality firewall), QBism, and Bohmian mechanics, and interfaces with P4's cross-ladder readout, P5's Tsirelson bound, and no-signaling marginals. Whether the Born rule is modified in the strong-field regime is marked as an open problem. 本文在 SAE(Self-as-an-End)框架内,为模平方这一读出形式给出一个本体来源。 本文区分三层强度:T1(Gleason 类数学唯一性,外部承接)、T2(二次型读出的强结构推导,核心交付——非 Gleason 等价完整定理)、T3(本体机制图像,作为候选)。 Related identifiers (Related/alternate identifiers) All "is referenced by / references" relations to established SAE works.
