It from position not from bit

Abstract

Abstract John Archibald Wheeler’s “it from bit” hypothesis proposes that physical reality emerges from information generated through observer-participatory quantum events. This paper presents a mathematical counter-framework: “it from position.” We define a complete, timeless, five-dimensional structure Ω (the 5D quantum foam) that exists independently of observation. The observer occupies a position p in a five-dimensional manifold M5, comprising spatial coordinates (x, y, z), a temporal coordinate (τ), and a consciousness-clarity coordinate (c). A projection function πp maps the totality Ω onto the observer’s accessible reality R(p). We demonstrate that Wheeler’s “it from bit” emerges as a limiting case of this framework when c → 0, reducing the projection to binary measurement outcomes. Conversely, as c → 1 (pure, uninfluenced perception), the projection converges on Ω itself. This framework dissolves the measurement problem, reinterprets quantum entanglement as positional unity, and provides a formal basis for the relationship between consciousness and physical reality. Testable predictions distinguishing this model from standard “it from bit” are proposed.

The Observer's Projection: A Structural Solution to the Quantum Measurement Problem

Bergen, Travis

This work presents a structural solution to the quantum measurement problem by distinguishing physical quantum evolution from the experiential definiteness enforced by the observer’s informational geometry. The observer is modeled as a structured information manifold, M=(Ω,G,τ)M = (\Omega, G, \tau)M=(Ω,G,τ), whose integration, continuity, and projection properties guarantee a single definite experiential outcome without requiring physical collapse of the wavefunction. The theory retains full physical unitarity while explaining phenomenological collapse as an artifact of projection. The paper further introduces a graded measure of consciousness, proposes dynamical soliton models for self-awareness within the manifold, and outlines potential physical grounding of the integration operator via entanglement or optimization principles. The result is a mathematically coherent, ontologically minimal, and empirically approachable framework unifying conscious observation and quantum theory.

Formal Theory of Conscious Projection in Quantum Measurement

Bergen, Travis

This document develops the formal mathematical foundations of the Conscious Projection hypothesis, which resolves the quantum measurement problem by modeling conscious observation as a projection from a globally integrated information manifold. The work introduces the structure of a conscious manifold M=(Ω,G,τ)\mathcal{M} = (\Omega, G, \tau)M=(Ω,G,τ), establishes four foundational lemmas describing structural constraints on observation, and proves two central theorems: Theorem 1 (Definite Outcomes): Collapse is an experiential selection imposed by global integration, degenerate projection, and diachronic identity. Theorem 2 (Non-Observability): Collapse is epistemically private and leaves no physical trace in Hilbert space, ensuring consistency with unitary evolution. These results formally distinguish subjective collapse from physical dynamics, providing a mathematically grounded interpretation of consciousness in quantum measurement and yielding empirically relevant predictions for altered states.

There is No Observer Problem

Mart Wijn

AbstractThis paper demonstrates that the observer problem—the longstanding notion that conscious observation fundamentally alters the observed system—does not exist as a property of reality. It is an artefact of a particular mode of perception. Five independent analyses converge on this conclusion. A cosmological analysis situates the observable universe within a five-dimensional quantum foam structure, reframing observer effects as interactions with dimensional substrates rather than consciousness-dependent phenomena. An epistemological analysis introduces the concept of multiversal truth and establishes that apparent contradictions in observation arise from incomplete perception, not from genuine incompatibility in the observed. A neurological analysis demonstrates that what we call ‘the observer’ is dominated by the left hemisphere—a narrative-constructing system that imposes interpretation before perception is complete—and that a stable, measurable alternative exists: right-hemisphere-dominant consciousness in which knowledge is present but does not uncontrollably influence perception. A physical analysis of the measurement problem reframes wave function collapse as a balance problem: measurement disrupts phase relationships through asymmetric coupling, not through observation per se. Finally, an experimental analysis of the double-slit experiment reveals that the interference pattern is a system effect—emergent from the interaction of electron, geometry, and environment—not evidence that a particle passes through two slits simultaneously. Together, these five analyses dissolve the observer problem and expose its origin: a left-hemisphere-dominant mode of perception that isolates objects from their systems, imposes narrative on raw experience, and projects that interference onto reality as if it were a fundamental property of nature.

A physical approach to qualia and the emergence of conscious observers in qualia space

Resende, Pedro

I propose that qualia are physical because they are directly observable, and revisit the contentious link between consciousness and quantum measurements from a new perspective -- one that does not rely on observers or wave function collapse but instead treats physical measurements as fundamental in a sense resonant with Wheeler's it-from-bit. Building on a mathematical definition of measurement space in physics, I reinterpret it as a model of qualia, effectively equating the measurement problem of quantum mechanics with the hard problem of consciousness. The resulting framework falls within panpsychism, and offers potential solutions to the combination problem. Moreover, some of the mathematical structure of measurement spaces, taken for granted in physics, needs justification for qualia, suggesting that the apparent solidity of physical reality is deeply rooted in how humans process information.

Consciousness as Information-Optimizing Participatory Extractor of Reality (CIO-PER): A Unified Information-Theoretic Framework for the Emergence of Observable Reality from a Pre-Spacetime Substrate

Martin Noirmont

This article presents a basic concept for a comprehensive, unified theoretical framework for the mechanism of consciousness by synthesizing four cornerstone advances in quantum foundations and information physics: John Archibald Wheeler’s participatory universe and “It from Bit” paradigm [1], Quantum Bayesianism (QBism) with its participatory realism [2], Melvin Vopson’s Infodynamics (encompassing the mass-energy-information equivalence principle and the second law of infodynamics) [3,4], and Wojciech Zurek’s decoherence theory together with Quantum Darwinism, which accounts for the “loss of quantumness” and the emergence of classical objectivity [5,6]. In contrast to objective-collapse models such as Penrose and Hameroff’s Orchestrated Objective Reduction (Orch-OR) [7], we propose that consciousness is not a secondary emergent phenomenon arising from physical processes within an already-objective spacetime but the „primary participatory agent” that actively extracts and renders the classical, observable, and subjectively experienced reality - including particles, mass, energy, frequency, and spacetime geometry itself - from a deeper, pre-spacetime, purely informational substrate we denote as Φ. A mathematically consistent model is constructed in which consciousness functions as an information-optimizing, self-referential agent within Φ. Quantum states are interpreted as an agent’s subjective Bayesian probabilities (QBism); information entropy is dynamically minimized according to the second law of infodynamics; environmental interactions select robust pointer states through redundant copying (Quantum Darwinism); and participatory measurements actualize definite “its” (Wheeler) from underlying “bits.” The Einstein–Planck–de Broglie equivalence E = mc² = hf, which implies that every massive particle possesses an internal “metronome” ticking at the Compton frequency f ≈ mc²/h, appears only as a stabilized, experienced feature „after” this participatory extraction process. The framework preserves all empirical successes of quantum mechanics while naturally accommodating a simulation-like virtuality of macroscopic reality. We derive explicit mathematical relations, testable predictions, a detailed comparison with Orch-OR, followed by an extensive discussion of potential criticisms, and - crucially - a new extension exploring how the same mechanism may enable the emergence of consciousness in advanced artificial intelligence systems, particularly agentic large language models (LLMs). The result is a physically operational, information-theoretic vision of consciousness as the co-creator of the observable cosmos.

Coordinate Slicing Theory (CST): A Five-Dimensional Single-Reality Framework for Quantum Mechanics

Anonymous

We propose Coordinate Slicing Theory (CST), an interpretive framework for quantum mechanics that maintains a single realized reality without hidden variables, branching worlds, or observer-dependent collapse. CST posits that physical systems extend not only through spacetime but also through an ontic probability manifold P — a real, observer-independent structure encoding unresolved potential for definiteness, rather than a catalogue of pre-existing outcomes or mere epistemic uncertainty. Definite facts are created through interaction via "slicing": a localized interaction that produces stable relational records by localizing a system's extension in P. Which outcome a slicing event creates is irreducibly chancy: CST relocates and reframes the selection problem rather than solving it, contributing an ontology of the pre-outcome situation and a covariant account of when and where facts are created. Classical definiteness arises from continual environmental slicing, while quantum phenomena appear when extension in P persists until interaction. Entanglement is reinterpreted geometrically as shared probability structure: entangled systems occupy a common structure in P, so a single slicing event jointly creates correlated outcomes without signaling, temporal ordering, or pre-existing values. CST is an interpretation, not a modification of quantum dynamics, and is empirically equivalent to standard quantum mechanics. We construct explicit toy models in which quantum states arise as projections of densities on probability manifolds (S² for qubits, CP³ for qubit pairs), with unitary dynamics lifted to a flow on the manifold. A no-go lemma shows that deterministic responses cannot reproduce the Born rule for pure states; the models therefore employ stochastic likelihood responses, which reproduce Born statistics exactly for all preparations, recover projective collapse and repeatability, satisfy no-signaling, reproduce Bell correlations, and yield a foliation-independent update scheme for spacelike-separated interactions.
