Back action of nonequilibrium phonons on the optically induced dynamics in semiconductor quantum dots

A. Krügel, V. M. Axt, T. Kühn

The dynamics in a GaAs-type quantum dot induced by excitation with Gaussian laser pulses of arbitrary duration are calculated in the density matrix formalism using the correlation expansion. In particular the back-action of nonequilibrium phonons, i.e., the coherent phonon amplitude and the nonequilibrium phonon occupation, on the electronic two-level system are studied. We find that especially for long pulses and low temperatures nonequilibrium phonons play an important role and cannot be neglected.

Phonon induced phase grating in quantum dot system

Guangling Cheng, Wenxue Zhong, Ai-Xi Chen

Electromagnetically induced phase grating is theoretically investigated in the driven two-level quantum dot exciton system at the presence of the exciton-phonon interactions. Due to the phonon-induced coherent population oscillation, the dispersion and absorption spectra are sharply changed and the phase modulation is enhanced via the high refractive index with nearly-vanishing absorption, which could effectively diffract a weak probe light into the first-order direction with the help of a standing-wave control field. Moreover, the diffraction efficiency of the grating can be easily manipulated by controlling the Huang-Rhys factor representing the exciton-phonon coupling, the intensity and detuning of the control field, and the detuning of the probe field. The scheme we present has potential applications in the photon devices for optical-switching and optical-imaging in the micro-nano solid-state system.

Vacuum-induced coherence in quantum dot systems

Anna Sitek, Paweł Machnikowski

We present a theoretical study of vacuum-induced coherence in a pair of vertically stacked semiconductor quantum dots. The process consists in a coherent excitation transfer from a single-exciton state localized in one dot to a delocalized state in which the exciton occupation gets trapped. We study the influence of the factors characteristic of quantum dot systems (as opposed to natural atoms): energy mismatch, coupling between the single-exciton states localized in different dots, and different and nonparallel dipoles due to sub-band mixing, as well as coupling to phonons. We show that the destructive effect of the energy mismatch can be overcome by an appropriate interplay of the dipole moments and coupling between the dots which allows one to observe the trapping effect even in a structure with technologically realistic energy splitting of the order of milli--electron volts. We also analyze the impact of phonon dynamics on the occupation trapping and show that phonon effects are suppressed in a certain range of system parameters. This analysis shows that the vacuum-induced coherence effect and the associated long-living trapped excitonic population can be achieved in quantum dots.
