Abstract

Effects of a nonresonant oscillating magnetic field on transient precessions of ^<85> Rb atoms are studied in a rotating frame by using the optical pumping technique. The configuration of applied magnetic fields is such as the noresonant field is parallel to a static field along the light path (z axis) and perpendicular to another weak rf field. The shifts of nutation frequencies for particular values of the effective field were measured as a function of the amplitude of the nonresonant field, and new transient precessions were obtained just after the turning on and off of the nonresonant field pulse. These experimental results are compared with the solution of the Bloch equation for a spin-1/2 atom. The observed shifts of nutation frequencies are found to be well in agreement with theoretical curves, and discussions are given of the mechanism of appearance of the new transient precessions.|非共鳴な振動磁場の^<85>Rb原子の過渡的歳差運動に対する効果が回転系において光パンピングの技術を使って研究される。

The sublevel coherence or the spin precession has been generated by resonant light pulses in a system of 85Rb atoms dressed by resonant rf photons. The Hanle effect of the dressed atom has been observed in a rotating frame when the rf field is 90° out of phase with the light pulses, and the transverse pumping has been acheived under a weak effective field. A rotaty resonance of 85Rb atoms has been studied by an irradiation of the pumping light modulated at the nutation frequency of the dressed atoms.|副準位コヒーレンスが,ラジオ波光子を着衣した85Rb原子系に共鳴光により創られた。

We investigate the problem of finding eigenenergies of a spin-1/2 atom subjected to a strong oscillating magnetic field and a transverse static magnetic field which is large enough to the extent that the Larmor frequency of the atom becomes nearly equal to the frequency of the oscillating field. The analysis is made by using a perturbation method based on the theory of a dressed atom, and it is found that the calculated level shift of the atom is in good agreement with the experimental one measured as a shift of the nutation frequency of optically pumped Rb atoms.|強い振動磁場とこれに垂直な静磁場とにさらされたスピン1/2の原子の固有エネルギーを見出す問題を研究する。

STUDY OF NUTATIONAL RESONANCE IN OPTICALLY PUMPED RUBIDIUM VAPOR

W. Franzen

Abstract : A method for the optical observation of nutational resonance in optically pumped rubidium vapor has been studied both experimentally and theoretically. The method consists of pulsemodulating an rf magnetic field a one of the Zeeman resonance frequencies of the vapor and observing the resulting damped transient modulation in the transmitted light intensity. Of particular interest is the application of this method to a study of the spin relaxation of vapor atoms as influenced by the physical parameters of the system, in the case where the applied steady magnetic field is intense enough to cause individual Zeeman intervals to become noticeably unequal. Both single and double quantum resonances at a wide spectrum of Zeeman transitions of Rb-85 vapor diffusing through neon and helium buffer gases have been observed and identified, and the damping of the transient nutations in light intensity has been recorded under a variety of conditions. Transient dynamics of atomic spin in the spin-exchange-relaxation-free regime

Junjian Tang, Yan Yin, Yueyang Zhai +4 more

In this paper, we experimentally study transient dynamics of spin polarized atoms in the spin-exchange-relaxation-free (SERF) regime with a single-beam configuration. We pumped atoms with a weak detuning pumping beam, along with a sequence of magnetic field pulses orthogonal to the pumping beam were applied. The dynamics of atomic spin, which experiences Larmor precession under the perturbation of magnetic field, is detected by the transmitted pumping beam. Benefited from the long coherence time of atomic spin in the SERF regime, the dependence of precession frequency and decay rate, which is equal to the magnetic resonance linewidth of atomic spin, on magnetic fields is studied with the transient dynamics of atomic spin in the limit of low spin polarization. Moreover, we demonstrate that coil constants can be calibrated by analyzing the precession frequency of the transient dynamics of atomic spin. And the experimental results show that the coil constants are 114.25 ± 0.02 nT/mA and 114.12 ± 0.04 nT/mA in x- and y-axis, respectively. This method is particularly applicable to study the atomic spin dynamics and calibrate the coil constant in situ of a miniature single-beam SERF magnetometer.

Effect of Transverse Pumping in Two Rotating Fields

Noriaki Tsukada, T. Yabuzaki, Toru Ogawa

The evolution of magnetization of optically pumped atoms in the presence of two rotating rf fields with different frequencies is investigated by using the phenomenological Bloch equation. It is shown that the new type resonances, which are due to the effect of the transverse pumping, together with the ordinary magnetic resonance and the multiple quantum transitions are realized under these conditions. It is also shown that the Hanle curve is broadened by a rotating rf field in the same manner as by an oscillating rf field, and is shifted towards high field region as the intensity of the rotating rf field is increased. The results obtained are, in general, applicable to the case of an elliptically rotating rf field, which is superposition of two rotating rf fields.

Experimental Study of Zeeman Light Shifts in Weak Magnetic Fields

Claude N. Cohen-Tannoudji, J. Dupont-Roc

According to the quantum theory of the optical-pumping cycle, one can describe the effect of a nonresonant light beam on the different Zeeman sublevels of an atomic ground state by an effective Hamiltonian ${\mathcal{H}}_{e}$ which depends on the polarization and spectral profile of the incident light. In order to check the structure of ${\mathcal{H}}_{e}$, we have performed a detailed experimental study of the ground-state energy sublevels of various kinds of atoms perturbed by different types of nonresonant light beams. Attention is paid to the modification of the Zeeman structure due to ${\mathcal{H}}_{e}$. We have been able to obtain experimentally in the ground state of $^{199}\mathrm{Hg}$, $^{201}\mathrm{Hg}$, and $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$, Zeeman light shifts that are larger than the width of the levels due to the thermal relaxation. The removal of the Zeeman degeneracy in zero external field, due to a nonresonant light irradiation, is observed by different optical-pumping techniques; the full Zeeman diagram of the perturbed atoms is also determined when a static field ${\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\mathrm{H}}}_{0}$ is added. We have checked that the effect of ${\mathcal{H}}_{e}$ can be described in terms of fictitious static electric or magnetic fields. These fictitious fields can be used to act selectively on a given atomic level.
