Critical behavior of dirty free parafermionic chains

Akshat Pandey, Aditya Cowsik

Abstract A family of Z n -symmetric non-Hermitian models of Baxter was shown by Fendley to be exactly solvable via a parafermionic generalization of the Clifford algebra. We study these models with spatially random couplings, and obtain several exact results on thermodynamic singularities as the distributions of couplings are varied. We find that these singularities, independent of n, are identical to those in the random transverse-field Ising chain; correspondingly the models host infinite-randomness critical points. Similarities in structure to exact methods for random Ising models, a strong-disorder renormalization group, and generalizations to other models with free spectra, are discussed.

Yang-Lee Criticality as a Dissipative Dynamical Phase Transition: Quantum Simulation of non-Hermitian Physics without Post-selection

Stephen W. Yan

We show that the $d+0$-dimensional Yang-Lee theory describing classical Ising spins in an imaginary magnetic field can be realized, without post-selection, within a $(d-1)+1$ open quantum system whose dynamics consist of local unitaries and engineered dissipation. Competition between the coherent unitary and dissipative dynamics drives a transition wherein the time-dependence of a particular class of linear observables changes from damped oscillatory "underdamped" to purely exponential "overdamped" decay. Our construction relies on an extensive number of weak-symmetries of the Lindbladian fixed by the choice of observable but is otherwise exact. Consequently, we show that the dynamics are described by the non-Hermitian generator of the Yang-Lee transfer matrix, leading to an effective Yang-Lee theory defined on the spacetime history of the open system. By locally modifying the dynamics, we directly measure spin correlation functions of the Yang-Lee theory as well as a related "Loschmidt Echo" correlator which we detail. We explicitly show that the required dissipation channels can be obtained through local $2$-qubit gates and discuss potential realization on near-term quantum simulator devices. Finally, we generalize our construction to embed arbitrary non-Hermitian Hamiltonians within an open quantum system under Lindbladian time-evolution without post-selection, drawing connections between unconditional open quantum dynamics, exceptional point physics, and non-unitary statistical mechanics.

Interaction-Mediated Non-Reciprocal Dynamics in Open Quantum Systems: From an Exactly Solvable Model to Generic Behavior

Pietro Borchia, Johannes Knolle, Andreas Nunnenkamp

Reservoir engineering has emerged as a powerful paradigm to realize non-reciprocal dynamics in open quantum many-body systems. Here, we show that density-density interactions can transfer bath-induced non-reciprocity between different degrees of freedom. Specifically, we investigate a one-dimensional lattice of spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ fermions with all-to-all Hatsugai-Kohmoto interactions in the presence of an engineered reservoir. We establish the exact solvability of the Lindbladian dynamics and show that the interplay between non-reciprocity and interactions qualitatively reshapes the dynamics of excitations. Remarkably, interactions induce directional drift even in spin sectors that are not directly coupled to the reservoir. By analyzing a driven-dissipative Fermi-Hubbard chain, we show that the same mechanism persists for local interactions. The Hatsugai-Kohmoto model thus emerges as a minimal, exactly solvable platform for interaction-mediated non-reciprocal many-body dynamics.

Parafermionic conformal field theory on the lattice

Roger S. K. Mong, David J Clarke, Jason Alicea +2 more

Finding the precise correspondence between lattice operators and the continuum fields that describe their long-distance properties is a largely open problem for strongly interacting critical points. Here, we solve this problem essentially completely in the case of the three-state Potts model, which exhibits a phase transition described by a strongly interacting 'parafermion' conformal field theory. Using symmetry arguments, insights from integrability, and extensive simulations, we construct lattice analogues of nearly all the relevant and marginal physical fields governing this transition. This construction includes chiral fields such as the parafermion. Along the way we also clarify the structure of operator product expansions between order and disorder fields, which we confirm numerically. Our results both suggest a systematic methodology for attacking non-free field theories on the lattice and find broader applications in the pursuit of exotic topologically ordered phases of matter.
