Abstract

Finding the precise correspondence between lattice operators and the continuum fields that describe their long-distance properties is a largely open problem for strongly interacting critical points. Here, we solve this problem essentially completely in the case of the three-state Potts model, which exhibits a phase transition described by a strongly interacting 'parafermion' conformal field theory. Using symmetry arguments, insights from integrability, and extensive simulations, we construct lattice analogues of nearly all the relevant and marginal physical fields governing this transition. This construction includes chiral fields such as the parafermion. Along the way we also clarify the structure of operator product expansions between order and disorder fields, which we confirm numerically. Our results both suggest a systematic methodology for attacking non-free field theories on the lattice and find broader applications in the pursuit of exotic topologically ordered phases of matter.

Exotic phases of interacting Majorana fermions and parafermions

O'Brien, Edward

In this thesis exotic phases of models preserving the symmetries of the one-dimensional quantum Ising and three-state Potts chains are considered, the natural habitats of Majorana fermions and parafermions, respectively. Along with numerical techniques, conformal field theory (CFT) is used to study the resulting physics. Chapter 1 gives an introduction to the field and explains the basics of the numerical techniques to be used throughout the thesis. CFT is briefly introduced in Chapter 2 before the key results necessary for the thesis are given. In Chapter 3, self-dual interactions are added to the critical Ising model, giving a range of different phases. A tricritical Ising point separates the Ising phase from an order-disorder coexistence phase on the chirally symmetric line, while a supersymmetric line provides the transition to an incommensurate phase in the general model. The model is solved exactly on a free-fermionic line giving insight into the points where only numerical analysis can be performed. This is supplemented by Appendix A, where the qualitative difference between similar perturbations is considered. Chapters 4 and 5 consider models with the symmetries of the three-state Potts model. Various phases are found including an order-disorder coexistence phase, a second critical Potts phase, a "not-A" phase, and a representation symmetry protected topological phase. The effect of lattice momentum on the stability of phases and the connection with conformal field theory operators is studied. Lattice realizations of several CFTs are found, such as the tricritical Potts CFT and a CFT expressible in two different forms, either in terms of a boson and fermion, or Potts and tricritical Ising CFTs.

A lattice model for the second $\mathbb{Z}_{3}$ parafermionic field theory

Benoit Estienne

The second $\mathbb{Z}_{3}$ parafermionic conformal theories are associated with the coset construction $\frac{SU(2)_{k}\times SU(2)_{4}}{SU(2)_{k+4}} $. Solid-on-solid integrable lattice models obtained by fusion of the model based on level-1 representation of the affine algebra $B_1^{(1)}$ have a critical point described by these conformal theories. Explicit values for the Boltzmann weights are derived for these models, and it is shown that the Boltzmann weights can be made positive for a particular value of the spectral parameter, opening a way to eventual numerical simulations of these conformal field theories. Away from criticality, these lattice models describe an integrable, massive perturbation of the parafermionic conformal theory by the relevant field $Ψ_{-2/3}^{\dagger}D_{1,3} $.

Quantum criticality in many-body parafermion chains

Ville Lahtinen, Teresia Månsson, Eddy Ardonne

We construct local generalizations of 3-state Potts models with exotic critical points. We analytically show that these are described by non-diagonal modular invariant partition functions of products of Z_3 Z 3 parafermion or u(1)_6 u ( 1 ) 6 conformal field theories (CFTs). These correspond either to non-trivial permutation invariants or block diagonal invariants, that one can understand in terms of anyon condensation. In terms of lattice parafermion operators, the constructed models correspond to parafermion chains with many-body terms. Our construction is based on how the partition function of a CFT depends on symmetry sectors and boundary conditions. This enables to write the partition function corresponding to one modular invariant as a linear combination of another over different sectors and boundary conditions, which translates to a general recipe how to write down a microscopic model, tuned to criticality. We show that the scheme can also be extended to construct critical generalizations of k k -state clock type models.

Quenches to the critical point of the three-state Potts model: Matrix product state simulations and conformal field theory

Niall Robertson, Jacopo Surace, Luca Tagliacozzo

Conformal field theories (CFTs) have been used extensively to understand the physics of critical lattice models at equilibrium. However, the applicability of CFT calculations to the behavior of the lattice systems in the out-of-equilibrium setting is not entirely understood. In this work, we compare the CFT results of the evolution of the entanglement spectrum after a quantum quench with numerical calculations of the entanglement spectrum of the three-state Potts model using matrix product state simulations. Our results lead us to conjecture that CFT does not describe the entanglement spectrum of the three-state Potts model at long times, contrary to what happens in the Ising model. We thus numerically simulate the out-of-equilibrium behavior of the Potts model according to the CFT protocol, i.e., by taking a particular product state and ``cooling'' it, then quenching to the critical point and finding that, in this case, the entanglement spectrum is indeed described by the CFT at long times.

Lattice regularisation of a non-compact boundary conformal field theory

Niall Robertson, Jesper Lykke Jacobsen, Hubert Saleur

Abstract Non-compact Conformal Field Theories (CFTs) are central to several aspects of string theory and condensed matter physics. They are characterised, in particular, by the appearance of a continuum of conformal dimensions. Surprisingly, such CFTs have been identified as the continuum limits of lattice models with a finite number of degrees of freedom per site. However, results have so far been restricted to the case of periodic boundary conditions, precluding the exploration via lattice models of aspects of non-compact boundary CFTs and the corresponding D-brane constructions. The present paper follows a series of previous works on a ℤ2-staggered XXZ spin chain, whose continuum limit is known to be a non-compact CFT related with the Euclidian black hole sigma model. By using the relationship of this spin chain with an integrable $$ {D}_2^2 $$ D 2 2 vertex model, we here identify integrable boundary conditions that lead to a continuous spectrum of boundary exponents, and thus correspond to non-compact branes. In the context of the Potts model on a square lattice, they correspond to wired boundary conditions at the physical antiferromagnetic critical point. The relations with the boundary parafermion theories are discussed as well. We are also able to identify a boundary renormalisation group flow from the non-compact boundary conditions to the previously studied compact ones.

Discrete holomorphicity in the chiral Potts model

Yacine Ikhlef, Robert Weston

We construct lattice parafermions for the Z ( N ) chiral Potts model in terms of quasi-local currents of the underlying quantum group. We show that the conservation of the quantum group currents leads to twisted discrete-holomorphicity (DH) conditions for the parafermions. At the critical Fateev–Zamolodchikov point the parafermions are the usual ones, and the DH conditions coincide with those found previously by Rajabpour and Cardy. Away from the critical point, we show that our twisted DH conditions can be understood as deformed lattice current conservation conditions for an underlying perturbed conformal field theory in both the general and N = 2 Ising cases.
