A Qubit Algorithm for Simulating the Nonlinear Schroedinger Equation

Connor Simpson

Recent work in mathematical physics and nonlinear optics has shown that Hamiltonians that are non-Hermitian but still symmetric under parity and time reversal can describe eigenstates of a system with real eigenvalues. Other research has also showed that the nonlinear Schrodinger equation can be generalized to describe PT-symmetric systems, which generates novel solutions not described by its Hermitian equivalent. The Hermitian form of the nonlinear Schroedinger equation can also be extended to describe a particular case of the general PT-symmetric NLS, suggesting a connection between the two. I attempted to generate a unitary operator that will be useful for unitary quantum algorithms describing a coupled set of nonlinear Schroedinger equations and the PT-symmetric version of the NLS.

Tunable nonlinear parity–time-symmetric defect modes with an atomic cell

Chao Hang, Dmitry A. Zezyulin, V. V. Konotop +1 more

We propose a scheme of creating a tunable highly nonlinear defect in a one-dimensional photonic crystal. The defect consists of an atomic cell filled in with two isotopes of three-level atoms. The probe-field refractive index of the defect can be made parity-time (PT) symmetric, which is achieved by proper combination of a control field and of Stark shifts induced by a far-off-resonance field. In the PT-symmetric system, families of stable nonlinear defect modes can be formed by the probe field.

Non-Hermiticity in quantum nonlinear optics through symplectic transformations

Ross Wakefield, Anthony Laing, Yogesh N. Joglekar

Over the past decade, classical optical systems with gain or loss, modeled by non-Hermitian parity-time symmetric Hamiltonians, have been deeply investigated. Yet, their applicability to the quantum domain with number-resolved photonic states is fundamentally voided by quantum-limited amplifier noise. Here, we show that second-quantized Hermitian Hamiltonians on the Fock space give rise to non-Hermitian effective Hamiltonians that generate the dynamics of corresponding creation and annihilation operators. Using this equivalence between PT-symmetry and symplectic Bogoliubov transformations, we create a quantum optical scheme comprising squeezing, phase-shifters, and beam-splitters for simulating arbitrary non-unitary processes by way of singular value decomposition. In contrast to the post-selection scheme for non-Hermitian quantum simulation, the success probability in this approach is independent of the system size or simulation time and can be efficiently Trotterised similar to a unitary transformation.
