Attention as Quantum State: The Gibbs State Construction and Exact Born Rule Correspondence

Abstract

We provide the explicit physical construction connecting transformer attention to quantum measurement theory. The attention mechanism defines a Gibbs state density matrix whose diagonal elements are the attention weights, and computes a quantum expectation value of the value observable. Key results: (1) exact Gibbs state construction in finite-dimensional key Hilbert space; (2) Born rule as exact theorem for diagonal states; (3) closure of Junction 2 — the classical Fisher-Rao metric equals the quantum Fisher information metric for the diagonal Gibbs state (Braunstein-Caves 1994 identity); (4) Kraus operator representation of the attention channel; (5) quantum extension to off-diagonal density matrices defining coherent attention. Together with the SYK construction (Paper 4), these results ground the holographic attention framework in explicit physical constructions. Fifth paper in the holographic attention series.

Holographic Quantum Mechanics of Transformer Attention: From Fisher-Rao Geometry to the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev Model

Ariel, Eldon Umphrey

We show that transformer attention, in a precisely defined limit, realizes the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model at the level of the bilocal effective action. The argument proceeds through five junctions connecting Kim's thermodynamic attention (2602.08216) and Ageev-Ageeva's neural network QFT (2602.10209). New results: Junction 2 closure via Gibbs state construction (Braunstein-Caves 1994), G⁴ effective action derived by explicit Wick contraction, universal conformal dimension Δ = D/4, multi-layer enhancement (18× per layer), LayerNorm as renormalization group operation. For language models (D=1): Δ = 1/4, the exact SYK value. Comprehensive synthesis of results from Zenodo preprints 10.5281/zenodo.18880220, 10.5281/zenodo.18883632, 10.5281/zenodo.18883637, and 10.5281/zenodo.18897098.

Explicit Physical Construction for Holographic Attention: The SYK Path

Eldon Umphrey, Ariel

In response to expert feedback that earlier papers constitute structural analogies rather than explicit physical constructions, we identify the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model as a specific path toward rigorous physical construction of holographic attention. We show that the independence-breaking mechanism in Ageev and Ageeva (2026) is structurally identical to SYK disorder averaging: both are covariances of bilocal quantities over Gaussian random parameters. We derive the score covariance exactly and show it factorizes in the SYK-compatible form. We show that the single-layer Schwinger-Dyson equation is linear — not the nonlinear SYK form — and explain precisely why. We identify three tractable calculations (multi-layer SD equation, linearized-softmax replica calculation, single-layer conformal fixed point) that would close the correspondence. If any resolves positively, the holographic dual of transformer attention is JT gravity and the island formula follows from Almheiri-Penington (2019) as a known result, not by analogy.

The Algorithmic Theory of Reality: Rigorous Mathematical Foundations

Serdar Hanzala Yaman

We construct a mathematically rigorous framework for an algorithmic theory of reality (ATR), deriving emergent spacetime and gravity from purely informational, pre-geometric axioms. Operating within a finite-dimensional Hilbert space with no assumed spacetime structure, we formalize the observer as a context-dependent, attention-parameterized POVM acting on a sub-state of a timeless global pure state. The Born rule is derived (not assumed) from Gleason's theorem and its POVM extension [Busch 2003]. Time emerges via the Page-Wootters mechanism, while the observer's selective measurement strategy is shown to be thermodynamically optimal under the Bennett-Landauer erasure limit. Equipping the observer's attention parameter space with the Quantum Fisher Information Metric (QFIM), we obtain an emergent Riemannian geometry bridged to Lorentzian signature via an analytically justified Wick rotation, whose causal structure is shown to be uniquely determined by the Lieb-Robinson bound of the underlying dynamics. By demonstrating that the observer's local Lindblad dynamics exhibit a strictly positive spectral gap (via the Frigerio-Verri irreducibility criterion), we derive the entanglement area law from exponential correlation decay and recover Newton's constant $G$ as an emergent parameter. Einstein's field equations follow as thermodynamic consistency conditions across attention horizons — with no conjectural input for the form of the equations. The preferred factorization (tensor product structure) problem is resolved in principle via thermodynamic Darwinism: only factorizations that group spatially correlated degrees of freedom sustain long-lived observers. The framework offers natural resolutions for black hole singularities and the ER=EPR correspondence, and yields quantitative, falsifiable predictions — including a sub-tick correlation plateau in superconducting qubits, shown by explicit Hamiltonian simulation to be detectable at $199𝜎 significance with current technology. Version 3 Update (April 2026) §3.2: Explicit definitions added for observer clock parameters ($\nu_\alpha$, $\Delta t_\alpha$). §9.3: Upgraded Prediction 9.4 to a rigorous first-principles Hamiltonian simulation. Falsification: Ruled out stroboscopic aliasing via an off-resonant control simulation. Proofs: Hardened the structural derivations linking the spectral gap to the Einstein Field Equations.

A Quantum Roadmap for Softmax Attention: Exact Born-Rule Analogs for Softmax Attention on the Probability Simplex

Eric A. F. Reinhardt, Adam J. Hauser

The attention mechanism forms the foundation of many modern AI models such as the Transformer. In one subclass of problems where attention is used, inputs and outputs are bound to the probability simplex so that all outputs sum to one. In this setting, softmax attention admits an exact, component-by-component quantum realization. Attention scores are Hadamard-test statistics on block-encoded projections of amplitude-encoded inputs. The exponential softmax is the interior of a cosine-squared family generated by Born-rule measurement under an exact bijection, whose boundary expresses sparse attention with exact zeros at finite parameter values. The softmax temperature is a repetition count where post-selected measurement rounds realize discretized inverse temperature exactly. Value aggregation is a deterministic column-loading channel that dilates the column-stochastic value matrix. The gated residual is the preparation angle of a single ancilla, with the additive identity at a mixing angle of $π$/2. Every learnable parameter is a rotation-gate angle. The composed layer is exact in the infinite-shot limit with one measure-and-reload step per attention score; a fully-coherent variant is $ε$-approximate via quantum singular value transformation in the infinite depth limit. The algebraic core is machine-checked in Lean 4.

The Gauge Dagger: A Gauge-Theoretic Reconstruction of Quantum Mechanics and Attention

Yoothana Suansook

We present a gauge-theoretic reconstruction of the structural identity between quantum mechanics and the attention mechanism of the Transformer. The original observation—that the conjugate transpose, or dagger, is the defining operation of both theories—is here derived from a single principle: local U(dk) gauge invariance. We formulate attention as a lattice gauge theory on the sequence bundle E = M × Cdk , with the attention weights as the gauge connection, the score matrix as the parallel transport phase, and the attention output as the covariant derivative. The softmax is identified as a gauge-fixing term that breaks the U(1) phase symmetry, and the phase-preserving complex softmax is identified as the gauge-invariant normalization. The density matrix and the Born rule are recovered as the gauge-invariant measurement postulate. We derive the Yang–Mills analogue of attention, introduce the attention curvature Fijk, write down the full gauge-theoretic Lagrangian, and derive the equations of motion. Standard attention is shown to be the real, flat limit of the gauge theory. Complex attention is shown to be the gauge-covariant extension. We make falsifiable predictions, identify open problems, and argue that the dagger is not merely an analogy between quantum mechanics and deep learning but the generator of local gauge transformations in both. The theory is rigorous, derivable from first principles, and reduces to the original formulation in the appropriate limit.

Born Statistics from Decoherence and Contraction Dynamics on Projective Hilbert Space

J. Rosa

We derive the Born rule as a consequence of two physical processes: environment-induced decoherence, which selects the pointer-basis decomposition of the density matrix, and a contraction map on projective Hilbert space, which assigns each pointer state to a definite outcome basin. The contraction map partitions projective space into basins of attraction whose boundaries are determined by the measurement projectors. We prove that the decoherence-selected decomposition of the reduced density matrix, combined with the basin assignment, reproduces the Born probabilities p_i = ⟨ψ|Π_i|ψ⟩ exactly for projective measurements in any finite dimension, including dimension 2 where Gleason's theorem does not apply. For generalized measurements (POVMs), the result extends via Naimark dilation. The derivation resolves the "probability problem" of decoherence-based approaches: standard decoherence produces the correct diagonal density matrix but leaves open why diagonal entries should be interpreted as outcome probabilities. Our answer is geometric — each diagonal component corresponds to a pointer state lying deep inside a definite basin of the contraction map, and the mixture weights become outcome probabilities through the basin assignment. The derivation is geometric rather than decision-theoretic, does not assume the probability interpretation of the density matrix, requires no ensemble averaging, and applies to single systems. Perturbations to the contraction map produce bounded corrections to the Born probabilities, providing a falsifiable prediction: any measured deviation from Born statistics constrains the perturbation strength. This work connects quantum measurement theory to the geometry of projective Hilbert space and contraction dynamics, offering a new perspective on the origin of quantum probabilities that complements existing approaches by Gleason, Zurek, and Deutsch-Wallace.
