The foundational framework herein termed APSF has been substantially revised and restated as the Atemporal Substrate Ontology (ASO) [link], which supersedes it in name, scope, and evidential framing. ABES (Atemporal Boundary Encoded Substrate) proposes a reframing of quantum foundations and quantum-gravitational unification. It synthesizes the Wheeler-DeWitt equation and holographic boundary encoding to identify an atemporal, pre-spatial information substrate — static correlations that reinterpret what the wave function describes, without altering its mathematics. This paper is one application of the Atemporal Substrate Ontology (ASO) incorporating Holographic Principle. The framework rests on two principles: (1) systems unable to support 3+1D spacetime architecture must confine information to boundary encodings, and (2) atemporality is the default for such states. Both are independently supported by established physics. A host of quantum enigmas — from the measurement problem to non-locality to the arrow of time — dissolve as artifacts of the transition from atemporal substrate to bound spacetime.ABES is agnostic on emergent versus fundamental time, compatible with Page-Wootters, Zurek decoherence, and Copenhagen interpretations alike. It introduces no new equations, particles, or dimensions — only a reinterpretation of what existing mathematics describes. The paper includes formal derivations from explicit premises (Appendix C), a path toward mathematical formalization (Appendix A), and verified computational demonstrations (Appendix B).The framework complements rather than competes with leading programs. An atemporal 1D string, for instance, offers string theory a path forward without altering its existing machinery. Similar clean integrations apply to loop quantum gravity, emergent gravity, and quantum information theory. This is a comprehensive paper covering quantum foundations, eleven physics enigmas, quantum-gravitational unification, and testable distinguishing predictions.

A century after the wave function's introduction, the vocabulary chosen for it in 1926 - propagation, evolution, collapse, wave - still quietly settles its ontology: each term presupposes an object already situated in spacetime. This paper explores what follows from withholding that assumption. On the proposed reading - an Atemporal Substrate Ontology (ASO) - the entity described by ψ possesses no intrinsic spatiotemporal properties, and location, duration, and ordering arise only at interaction events. The mathematics is unchanged; only the referent is reinterpreted. The proposal is offered under an explicit contract: it sorts every standard puzzle it touches into an itemized ledger of what is dissolved, what is relocated and left open, and what is only partially addressed; it states the experimental result that would kill it; and its consistency with standard quantum computation is demonstrated in executable form. The reading inverts the standard explanandum: superposition is the natural condition of a timeless domain, and it is definiteness, not coexistence, that requires explanation. Under this inversion, seven notorious difficulties - non-local correlation, the frame-dependence of collapse, delayed choice, wave-particle duality, contextuality, the observer effect, the problem of time - cease to arise in their usual form, while outcome selection, the preferred basis, the Born measure, and the Tsirelson bound are explicitly relocated rather than solved. The proposal is situated among converging programs (possibilist transactional interpretation, timeless configuration-space dynamics, relational quantum mechanics, structure-first metaphysics) and distinguished by its deliberate mechanism-agnosticism. Its death condition is confirmation of collapse as an intrinsic, time-parametrized modification of ψ itself; short of that, it competes on the currencies interpretations have always competed on and says so.
This paper proposes a foundational framework in which the unification problem—specifically, gravity's persistent resistance to integration with the three Standard Model forces — arises from a categorical difference rather than a technical one. Gravity is treated as the self-interaction of the universe as a single system, operating across a multi temporal geometric structure with at least two temporal axes: a forward temporal axis experienced sequentially by 4 dimensional observers, and one or more lateral temporal axes along which quantum branching occurs simultaneously. Standard Model forces are confined to the forward temporal axis. Gravity propagates across the full temporal geometry. This categorical asymmetry explains why conventional unification machinery fails without invoking new particles or undiscovered symmetries. The framework further proposes that the quantum measurement problem dissolves under quantum monism: wavefunction collapse is not a physical event but a perspectival artifact of 4D-bound observers sampling a laterally extended structure they cannot fully resolve. Bell's separability assumption is identified as the contrivance, not a constraint the framework must satisfy. A specific, falsifiable prediction is proposed: a cosmological correction term α in the Penrose gravitational collapse threshold, detectable as a directional bias in superposition collapse outcomes correlated with the CMB dipole axis. The mathematical structures required to formalize the framework are identified precisely, and connections to existing programs — Wheeler-DeWitt cosmology, Bars' two-time physics, Verlinde's entropic gravity, Penrose's Conformal Cyclic Cosmology, and Zurek's envariance — are drawn explicitly. This paper does not claim to resolve these structures. It claims to identify them with sufficient precision that the resolution becomes a tractable mathematical problem.
This paper develops a dual-domain framework for quantum foundations grounded in a structural distinction between a nonlocal, atemporal coherence domain (denoted −0) and a local, temporal decoherence domain (denoted +1). Quantum states are interpreted as existing within −0, while classical outcomes emerge when these states transition irreversibly into +1 through decoherence and measurement. The framework is not a modification of quantum mechanics but a reinterpretation of its ontological domain. The framework provides a unified ontological account of: quantum entanglement and nonlocal correlations; the absence of superluminal signalling; the emergence of classicality through decoherence; the mass dependence of decoherence rates; and the persistent incompatibility between quantum field theory and general relativity. Within this model, entanglement corresponds to the persistence of a single −0 state across multiple +1 localisations. Measurement is interpreted not as a collapse occurring within spacetime, but as a boundary transition from coherence to localisation. The paper further argues that gravity should not be interpreted as a quantum field propagating within spacetime, but rather as the geometric structure of the coherence–decoherence boundary itself. This perspective offers a principled explanation for the persistent incompatibility between quantum field theory and general relativity — a tension that may arise not from technical deficiency but from a category error: attempting to describe boundary geometry as though it were content within one of the domains it separates.
Layered Substrate Theory proposes a speculative substrate-based ontology in which spacetime, gravity, time, quantum behavior, entanglement, measurement, and decoherence emerge from deeper substrate-state dynamics. Version 1.1 refines the substrate as a state-bearing, phase-supporting, geometry-generating structure, adds constraint principles for relating known equation forms to substrate behavior, and summarizes toy-model feasibility checks. The framework remains conceptual, not experimentally proven, and preserves no-signaling while outlining open work in formal derivation, metric projection, physical constants, and testability.
