QBIoT: A Quantum Blockchain Framework for IoT with an Improved Proof-of-Authority Consensus Algorithm and a Public-Key Quantum Signature

Ang Liu, Qing Zhang, Shengwei Xu +3 more

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a network system that connects physical devices through the Internet, allowing them to interact. Nowadays, IoT has become an integral part of our lives, offering convenience and smart functionality. However, the growing number of IoT devices has brought about a corresponding increase in cybersecurity threats, such as device vulnerabilities, data privacy concerns, and network susceptibilities. Integrating blockchain technology with IoT has proven to be a promising approach to enhance IoT security. Nevertheless, the emergence of quantum computing poses a significant challenge to the security of traditional classical cryptography used in blockchain, potentially exposing it to quantum cyber-attacks. To support the growth of the IoT industry, mitigate quantum threats, and safeguard IoT data, this study proposes a robust blockchain solution for IoT that incorporates both classical and post-quantum security measures. Firstly, we present the Quantum-Enhanced Blockchain Architecture for IoT (QBIoT) to ensure secure data sharing and integrity protection. Secondly, we propose an improved Proof of Authority consensus algorithm called “Proof of Authority with Random Election” (PoARE), implemented within QBIoT for leader selection and new block creation. Thirdly, we develop a public-key quantum signature protocol for transaction verification in the blockchain. Finally, a comprehensive security analysis of QBIoT demonstrates its resilience against cyber threats from both classical and quantum adversaries. In summary, this research introduces an innovative quantum-enhanced blockchain solution to address quantum security concerns within the realm of IoT. The proposed QBIoT framework contributes to the ongoing development of quantum blockchain technology and offers valuable insights for future research on IoT security.

Adaptive Quantum Blockchain For Secure IoT Resource Coordination

Ganesh Racha

The fast growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) has posed considerable problems regarding the security, scalability, and effective co-ordination of resources between interdependent devices. The conventional centralized solutions have failed to manage the active and decentralized nature of IoT environments. Blockchain technology also proposes a secure and decentralized model of data management, but it is based on classical cryptography methods that are susceptible to new attacks by quantum computers. The need to develop quantum-resistant security mechanisms is noted by the development of quantum algorithms by Peter Shor and Lov Grover. The present paper introduces a proposal of Adaptive Quantum Blockchain based on the Framework of Secure IoT Resource Coordination which combines quantum cryptography, blockchain technology, and adaptive optimization methods. The suggested system is based on quantum-secure encryption techniques to improve the protection of data, whereas blockchain provides decentralization and transparency. Moreover, adaptive algorithms allow allocating resources dynamically and effectively manage the IoT networks. The architecture will enhance security, scalability, and performance in complicated IoT settings. The suggested solution offers a solid solution to next generation intelligent and secure distributed systems.

Integrating Post-Quantum Cryptography and Blockchain to Secure Low-Cost IoT Devices

Aniello Castiglione, Jacopo Gennaro Esposito, Vincenzo Loia +3 more

In the contemporary era, the global proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT) devices exceeds 15 billion, serving functions from wearables to smart grid monitoring. These devices frequently manage sensitive data, underscoring the need for secure and reliable IoT networks leveraging blockchain technology. A key innovation of this study is an approach to mitigate vulnerabilities that quantum computing poses to blockchain-based IoT systems, which existing cryptographic methods cannot effectively address. Quantum computers could exploit these weaknesses to compromise key-pair generation and extract private keys from transaction signatures. To overcome this, the research introduces an optimized implementation of the post-quantum digital signature algorithm Dilithium-5, ensuring blockchain security and quantum readiness. These transaction signatures are designed for low-power, cost-effective microcontrollers, such as the ESP32, making the solution accessible for a wide range of IoT devices. In addition, the study includes a case study involving a post-quantum safe portable device for measuring blood oxygen levels and heart rate, illustrating the practical benefits and effectiveness of the proposed solution in enhancing IoT security against quantum threats. The results demonstrate that the proposed approach ensures quantum-resistant security while maintaining performance efficiency, making it suitable for real-world IoT applications.
