The Parametric Family x² − x ± 1: Axioms, Algebraic Duality, and the Born Rule

Abstract

We prove that the parametric family x² − x + c (c = ±1) is uniquely forced by three axioms: conservation, minimality, and binary coupling. The two polynomials generate the simplest real and imaginary quadratic number fields — ℚ(√5) and ℚ(√−3) — and classify trace-1 dynamics in GL(2,ℤ) into hyperbolic and elliptic regimes. The elliptic regime determines a unique positive-definite inner product via Schur’s lemma. Under continuous-time propagation, the hyperbolic regime forces complex-valued amplitudes. The Born rule p(z) = |z|² is derived as the unique measurement map respecting the dynamically determined inner product and tensor product compositionality. Ten independently verified physical domains — spanning condensed matter, quantum foundations, dynamical systems, and statistical mechanics — are cataloged as empirical instances of this algebraic structure at critical boundaries. No free parameters appear in the algebraic structure itself.

The Geometric Origin of Quantum Axioms: Emergence of Complex Numbers and the Born Rule from Split-Quaternionic Krein Algebra (Part III)

Masayuki Note

This paper is the third installment (Part III) of a research series dedicated to the geometric and algebraic foundations of higher-derivative scalar theories. Following the structural uniqueness of the $\Box^2$ operator (Part I: arXiv:2512.16955) and the emergence of spin-analogous dynamics (Part II), this work addresses the most fundamental axioms of quantum mechanics (QM). Key findings presented in this manuscript: Geometric Origin of Complex Numbers: We demonstrate that the standard complex field $\mathbb{C}$ of quantum mechanics is not a fundamental postulation but an emergent infrared (IR) feature. In the Split-Quaternionic Krein Algebra (PQA), the decoupling of heavy indefinite-metric modes at the Lee-Wick scale ($M \approx 11.3$ TeV) naturally reduces the internal degrees of freedom to a complex subalgebra isomorphic to $\mathbb{C}$. Derivation of the Born Rule: We show that the Born rule ($P = |\psi|^2$) emerges as the unique, positive-definite inner product consistent with the internal Krein metric $\eta$ after projecting out ghost-sector excitations. Algebraic Necessity of the Quadratic Form: The paper provides a rationale for the second-power dependence of probability, linking it to the conservation of the bilinear form under pseudo-unitary time evolution. By reframing standard QM as a low-energy manifestation of PQA geometry, this study provides a consistent "Why" for the mathematical structure of our quantum reality, suggesting that the "ghosts" of higher-derivative theories are the very keys to understanding the origin of quantum axioms.

The Structural Origin of the Born Rule: Rigidity of the Quantum Probability Exponent

Rodgers, Jeremy

This work provides a structural derivation of the quadratic form of the Born rule in quantum mechanics. Rather than postulating the probability rule as a foundational axiom, the paper proves that the exponent governing quantum probabilities is uniquely fixed by stability, contractivity, and duality requirements imposed on admissible physical laws. The analysis is carried out within a general operator-theoretic and law-space framework, in which physical laws are treated as fixed points of recursive generative dynamics. By combining strict contractive flow (Kappa Law), topological rigidity (Law of Endogenous Constraint), and algebra–geometry duality (Monad Duality), the paper demonstrates that only the Hilbert–Schmidt geometry is compatible with global stability of law evolution. As a consequence, the quadratic probability rule emerges as a rigid structural invariant rather than a free modeling choice. The result implies that any hypothetical modification of quantum theory based on non-quadratic probability rules would necessarily violate at least one of the fundamental structural requirements of admissible physical law, such as uniform contractivity, spectral stability, or duality consistency. Relation to Tier-1 dynamical formulation: This work develops a law-level (structural) resolution of the Born exponent. A complementary Tier-1 dynamical realization, formulated entirely within a constrained operator framework and independent of law-level recursion language, is developed in: J. Rodgers, Saturation Geometry and the Structural Emergence of Measurement and the Born Rule in a Capacity-Constrained Dirac–Λ System, Zenodo (2026).https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.18704783 The Tier-1 formulation may be read independently and derives the quadratic Born rule as a consequence of modular implementability and saturation geometry within the coupled Dirac–Λ system.

The Wrong Square Root: i as Consequence of Golden Chirality, and the Born Rule over ℝ(√5)

Clifford Keeble

The imaginary unit i = √(−1) enters quantum mechanics as a foundational assumption: wavefunctions are complex, evolution is unitary over ℂ, and the Born rule uses the circular norm |ψ|². We show that i is not a foundation but a consequence — specifically, the eigenvalue direction of the adjoint golden gamma matrix Γ_adj relative to the seed Γ_seed, constructed in companion Paper 191. A single sign flip in a 2×2 matrix over ℤ[φ] rotates the eigenvalue spectrum from the real axis to the imaginary axis. Traversing the golden split φ ↔ ψ in one direction produces real eigenvalues ±5^(1/4); in the reverse direction, imaginary eigenvalues ±i·5^(1/4). From this identification, the Born rule is reconstructed over ℝ(√5) without assuming ℂ. Complex conjugation is the chirality flip Γ_seed ↔ Γ_adj — a geometric operation derived from the algebra, not an algebraic assumption. Positivity of the Born rule is not an additional axiom and is not, as earlier drafts claimed, an immediate consequence of the chirality flip: it is restriction to the forward cone of the indefinite Galois norm N(a) = p² − 5q² on ℝ(√5), an object with signature (+,−) whose hyperbolic-plane structure the standard positive-definite Hilbert space cannot host. The normalization condition ⟨ψ_seed|ψ_adj⟩ = √5 is derived from the chiral coupling Γ_seed·Γ_adj = √5·σ₃ (machine-verified). The measurement problem dissolves: measurement is the round trip through the golden conjugation, reading a topological invariant without disturbing a topological state. No collapse is required. Standard QM is recovered as the special case in which the adjoint amplitude equals the complex conjugate of the seed amplitude. A new §11 resolves the (2,2)→(1,3) selection: the excluded timelike direction is the right-handed neutrino, and parity violation is the crystallisation closure choice at t=0. Whether the indefinite norm N connects causally to the indefinite form appearing in the Dedekind factorisation of ζ_{ℚ(√5)} is explicitly left open; an earlier attempt to identify Riemann zeros with the null locus of N failed numerical adversarial review and the correct coordinate map, if any, is deferred to future work.
