Ultrabright Entanglement Based Quantum Key Distribution over a 404 km Optical Fiber

Shi-Chang Zhuang, Bo Li, Ming-Yang Zheng +14 more

Entangled photons are crucial resources for quantum information processing. Here, we present an ultrabright polarization-entangled photon source based on a periodically poled lithium niobate waveguide designed for practical quantum communication networks. Using a 780 nm pump laser, the source achieves a pair generation rate of 2.4×10^{10} pairs/s/mW. Remarkably, the entangled photons are bright enough to be detected by a power meter, reaching a power of 17.9 nW under a pump power of 3.2 mW. We demonstrate the practicality of the source by conducting quantum key distribution experiments over long-distance fiber links. Wavelength-division multiplexing was employed to enhance the key generation, and nonlocal dispersion compensation was implemented to ensure precise timing coincidence measurements across a broad spectral range. By utilizing nine pairs of wavelength channels, the system achieved the applicable secure key rates of up to 440.80 bits/s over 200 km with a 62 dB loss and extended the maximum secure key generation distance to 404 km. These results demonstrate the potential of wavelength-multiplexed polarization-entangled photon sources for high-speed, long-distance quantum communication, positioning them as key components for future large-scale quantum networks.

Polarization compensation for entanglement-based quantum key distribution

Sijie Yin, Tian-Wang Luo, Wenjuan Jiang +6 more

In quantum key distribution (QKD) systems using polarization entanglement, channel polarization perturbations significantly compromise both efficiency and security. To address the slow response and instability of current entanglement-based polarization compensation techniques for entanglement-based quantum key distribution, we propose a polarization compensation scheme based on an adaptive gradient descent algorithm. The system's performance is tested over a 10 km single-sided fiber channel. Results show that this scheme maintains long-term stability of the polarization state under both random and periodic perturbations. The average compensation time is 248 ms, with an entanglement source average visibility of 83.43% and an average quantum error rate of 8.28%. This method effectively mitigates polarization perturbation in entanglement-based quantum key distribution (QKD). These results are pivotal for the development of long-distance, multi-node quantum communication networks.

Quantum entanglement distribution with 810 nm photons through telecom fibers

E. Meyer-Scott, H. Hübel, Alessandro Fedrizzi +3 more

We demonstrate the distribution of polarization entangled photons of wavelength 810 nm through standard telecom fibers. This technique allows quantum communication protocols to be performed over established fiber infrastructure, and makes use of the smaller and better performing setups available around 800 nm, as compared to those which use telecom wavelengths around 1550 nm. We examine the excitation and subsequent quenching of higher-order spatial modes in telecom fibers up to 6 km in length, and perform a distribution of high quality entanglement (visibility 95.6%). Finally, we demonstrate quantum key distribution using entangled 810 nm photons over a 4.4 km long installed telecom fiber link.
