Abstract

The present work analyzes the fermionic Ising spin glass model in a transverse magnetic field. The problem is written in the Grand Canonical ensemble with the spin operators represented by bilinear combinations of fermionic fields. The transverse field is a spin "flip" mechanism and inserts quantum fluctuations, which can lead the transition temperature Tj to quantum critical point (QCP). In this case, the phase transition from spin glass to paramagnetic phases occurs in T = o. On the other hand, charge fluctuations controlled by chemical potentiall-L show the existence of a tricritical point. The replica method with replica symmetry and static approximation are used to solve this problem. However, the replica symmetry solution shows some problems, like negative entropy in low temperatures. Thus, the stability conditions are derived to test the generated solution of this IDodel. The main purpose of this work is to study the competition between spin glass and paramagnetic phases with both quantum and charge fluctuations. After the stability conditions are derived, a detailed sight into the generated solution is shown under the form of diagrams phase. The stability conditions, however, show another applications in the present problem, once they can be used, for instance, in the tricritical point derivation.

Two-sublattice fermionic ising spin glass model with a transverse field: replica symmetry breaking solution

Fábio M. Zimmer

In the present work, a fermionic infinite-range Ising spin glass (SG) model with a transverse field Γ is studied. The model is analyzed in a one-lattice structure (quantum SG) and in a two-sublattice structure (SG/antiferromagnetism (AF) competition). In these two cases, the exchange interactions are random variables that follow Gaussian probability distributions (SK interactions). For the two-sublattice model, spins of distinct sublattices can couple with an SK-type interaction with an AF average. For a general case of this model, the disordered interactions can also occur with spins of same sublattices. The problem is formulated in a Grassmann path integral formalism within the static ansatz. The replica method is applied to treat the disorder, in which the replica symmetry (RS) and one-step replica symmetry breaking (1P-RSB) approximations are used. The one-lattice model results provide evidences that the 1S-RSB can be used to improve the physical description of the ordered quantum SG phase treated by the replica method. In the two-sublattice model, a parallel magnetic field H breaks the symmetry of the sublattices. It destroys the antiferromagnetic (AF) order, but it can favor the nonergodic mixed phase (SG+AF) characterizing an asymmetric RSB region. In this region, intra-sublattice disordered interactions V increase the difference between the RSB solutions of each sublattice. The freezing temperature (Tf ) shows a higher increase with H when V enhances. A discontinuous phase transition from the replica symmetry (RS) solution to the RSB solution can appear with the presence of an intra-sublattice ferromagnetic average coupling. The Γ field introduces a quantum spin flip mechanism that suppresses the magnetic orders leading them to quantum critical points. Results suggest that the quantum effects are not able to restore the RS solution. Therefore, the presence of both fields, Γ and H, produces effects that are in competition on Tf for instance. However, in the asymmetric RSB region, Γ can produce a stable RS solution at any finite temperature for a particular sublattice while the other sublattice still presents RSB solution for the special case in which only the intra-sublattice spins couple with disordered interactions.

Inverse transitions in fermionic ising spin glass models

C.V. Morais

The present work studies inverse transitions by using two spin glass models: the infinite-range fermionic Ising spin glass (FISG) in the presence of a transverse magnetic field ¡ and Hopfield fermionic Ising spin glass (HFISG) model with a ¡ field. In these models, the spin are written in terms of fermionic operators. In that case, there are four possible eigenvalues of the operator Sz i , two of them non-magnetic. The problem for both models is expressed in the path integral formalism with Grassmann variables. Particularly, the FISG and HFISG models are analysed in the Grand Canonical ensemble, which allows changing the average number occupation of fermions per site by adjusting the chemical potential μ, which is a magnetic dilution mechanism. The Grand Canonical Potential is obtained within the static approximation with replica symmetry and one-step replica symmetry breaking schemes. Firstly, the highly frustrated FISG model is studied. Essentially, for ¡ = 0, a first order inverse transition arises with the increase of μ (dilution). As a consequence, the inverse transitions can be studied under the effect of quantum fluctuations when a transverse magnetic field ¡ is turned on. As main result, it is shown that quantum fluctuations destroy the inverse transitions. Secondly, the role of frustration as ingredient for a model to present naturally inverse transitions is checked by the HFISG model, which allows interpolating from trivial randomness to a highly frustrated regime. In fact, it is shown that for ¡ = 0 and high values of μ, any frustration level presents a inverse transition. Finally, the introduction of the ¡ field in the HFISG model allows to study how the simultaneous adjusting of quantum fluctuations and the level of frustration affects the inverse transition in this model. As a result, it is suggested that the interplay between the dilution and the presence of a frustrated phase has an important role inverse transitions producing. In addition, when the effects of quantum fluctuations are introduced by ¡, the role of dilution seems to be weakened. As a consequence, the inverse transition is destroyed in HFISG model.

Replica symmetry breaking in the transverse-field Ising spin-glass model: Two fermionic representations

Eduardo Muccillo Monteiro Santos, Alba Theumann

We analyze the infinite range Ising spin glass in a transverse-field $\ensuremath{\Gamma}$ below the critical temperature by a one step replica symmetry breaking theory. The set of $n$ replicas is divided in $r$ blocks of $m$ replicas each. We present results for different values of the block-size parameter $m$. The spin operators are represented by bilinear combinations of fermionic fields and we compare the results of two models: In the four-states (4-S) model the diagonal ${S}_{i}^{z}$ operator has two unphysical vanishing eigenvalues, that are suppressed by a restraint in the two-states (2-S) model. In the static approximation we obtain qualitatively similar results for both models. They both exhibit a critical temperature ${T}_{c}(\ensuremath{\Gamma})$ that decreases when $\ensuremath{\Gamma}$ increases, until it reaches a quantum critical point at the same value of ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}_{c}$ and they are both unstable under replica symmetry breaking in the whole spin glass phase. Below the critical temperature we present results for the order parameters and free energy.

Studies of the phase diagram of randomly interacting fermionic systems

Oppermann, R., Bernd Rosenow

We present details of the phase diagrams of fermionic systems with random and frustrated interactions, emphasizing the important role of the chemical potential. The insulating fermionic Ising spin glass model is shown to reveal different entangled magnetic instabilities and phase transitions. We review tricritical phenomena related to the strong correspondence between charge and spin fluctuations, being controlled by quantum statistics. We compare the spin density diluted Sherrington-Kirkpatrick spin glass with classical spin 1 models such as the BEG model. We analyse in detail the infinite range model and show that spin glass order must decay discontinuously as the chemical potential exceeds a critical value, provided the temperature is below the tricritical one, and that the T=0 transition is of classical type. Parisi replica permutation symmetry breaking (RPSB) governs the thermal spin glass transitions and fermionic modifications of the SK-models AT-line emerge. RPSB takes place everywhere within the fermionic spin glass phase. Although the critical field theory of the quantum paramagnet to spin glass transition in metallic systems remains replica--symmetric at T=0, with only small corrections at low T from RPSB, the phase diagram is affected at O(T^0) by RPSB. Generalizing our results for the fermionic Ising spin glass we consider aspects of models with additional spin and charge quantum--dynamics such as metallic spin glasses.

Inverse freezing in the cluster fermionic spin glass model with a transverse field

Fábio M. Zimmer, C. F. Silva, C.V. Morais +1 more

The inverse freezing (IF) transition is studied with a cluster fermionic Ising spin glass model in the presence of a transverse magnetic field Γ. The model considers a disordered infinite-range interaction among magnetic moments of the clusters with a short-range ferromagnetic intracluster coupling J 0 . The intercluster disorder is treated within a mean-field theory by using the framework of one-step replica symmetry breaking and the static approximation. This treatment results in an effective model that is computed by means of an exact diagonalization method. In particular, in this fermionic problem, the chemical potential μ and the Γ introduce cluster charge fluctuations and quantum spin flipping, respectively. The results indicate an IF transition for a certain range of μ. When the short-range interaction increases, the IF is still found. However, the intensity of J 0 can affect the charge fluctuation, introducing a second-order IF transition. On the other hand, the enhancement of Γ destroys the inverse freezing.
