With the rapid development of 6G technologies, extremely large-scale reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (XL-RIS) have been introduced to enhance spatial diversity and improve signal coverage. Meanwhile, physical-layer key generation (PKG) has emerged as a promising, quantum-resistant solution for securing wireless communications. However, the deployment of XL-RIS significantly expands the near-field region, making traditional far-field planar wave models inadequate for PKG. To address this limitation, this paper proposes an XL-RIS-assisted PKG model based on near-field spherical wave propagation theory. We further derive a expression for the legitimate key generation rate (KGR) under passive eavesdropping attacks. To maximize the achievable KGR, we propose a novel alternating optimization(AO) algorithm ADA that combines Dinkelbach and the Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) to jointly optimize the base station (BS) beamforming vector and RIS reflection coefficients in an iterative manner. Simulation results indicate that the spatial resolution gain provided by the near-field channel helps enhance the independence between the legitimate and eavesdropping channels. The ADA demonstrates robust convergence. Notably, it maintains superior performance even when the eavesdropper and the legitimate user share the same azimuth angle.

By exploiting the entropy of wireless channels, physical layer key generation (PLKG) has gained considerable attention in recent years. Due to the characteristic of dynamic controlling of wireless channels, reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) can improve the key generation rate (KGR). Simultaneous transmission and reflection reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR- RIS) can extend the half-space coverage to full-space coverage. This paper proposes a STAR-RIS-assisted physical layer key generation (SRKG) scheme in a multi-user case. The objective is to maximize the sum KGR by jointly designing the transmitting and reflecting coefficients (TARCs). We propose an iterative algorithm based on alternating optimization (AO), utilizing successive convex approximation (SCA) and semi-definite relaxation (SDR) methods, to solve the non-convex optimization problem in the presence of correlated channels. We also propose a low-complexity algorithm based on Lagrange multipliers to jointly optimize TARCs considering independent fading. Finally, the simulation results validate that, compared with the PLKG scheme assisted by traditional RIS (T-RIS), the proposed SRKG scheme can achieve higher sum KGR in a wider range under correlated and independent channel conditions.
Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a promising technique to enhance the performance of physical-layer key generation (PKG) due to its ability to smartly customize the radio environments. Existing RIS-assisted PKG methods are mainly based on the idealistic assumption of an independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) channel model at both the transmitter and the RIS. However, the i.i.d. model is inaccurate for a typical RIS in an isotropic scattering environment. Also, neglecting the existence of channel spatial correlation would degrade the PKG performance. In this paper, we establish a general spatially correlated channel model in multi-antenna systems and propose a new PKG framework based on the transmit and the reflective beamforming at the base station (BS) and the RIS. Specifically, we derive a closed-form expression for characterizing the key generation rate (KGR) and obtain a globally optimal solution of the beamformers to maximize the KGR. Furthermore, we analyze the KGR performance difference between the one adopting the assumption of the i.i.d. model and that of the spatially correlated model. It is found that the beamforming designed for the correlated model outperforms that for the i.i.d. model while the KGR gain increases with the channel correlation. Simulation results show that compared to existing methods based on the i.i.d. fading model, our proposed method achieves about 5 dB performance gain when the BS antenna correlationρis 0.3 and the RIS element spacing is half of the wavelength.
The escalating demand for secure wireless communication, driven by the proliferation of connected devices, has made information security a paramount concern. Traditional encryption methods struggle against eavesdropping and malicious jamming in open wireless channels, necessitating innovative solutions. This paper explores physical layer security, leveraging intrinsic wireless channel properties, enhanced by reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS). We propose an RIS-assisted multiple-input single-output system to counteract eavesdroppers and jamming threats through an artificial noise (AN) cooperation scheme. AN is injected during legitimate beamforming to bolster transmission security. Jointly optimizing the base station’s precoding vector, AN vector, and RIS reflection coefficients under power, quality, and phase constraints, we formulate a non-convex secrecy rate (SR) maximization problem. Addressing its complexity, we model it as a Markov decision process and develop a deep deterministic policy gradient algorithm within a deep reinforcement learning framework. Simulation results demonstrate the proposed method’s superior performance, reduced complexity, and robustness against multiple eavesdroppers and high-power jamming, underscoring the critical roles of RIS and AN in securing wireless communications. It consistently outperforms traditional algorithms such as alternating optimization with semidefinite programming, offering up to 7% higher SR and achieving nearly 120% SR gains as RIS elements scale from N =4 to N =10.
Physical-layer key generation (PKG) based on wireless channels is a lightweight technique to establish secure keys between legitimate communication nodes. Recently, intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) have been leveraged to enhance the performance of PKG in terms of secret key rate (SKR), as it can reconfigure the wireless propagation environment and introduce more channel randomness. In this paper, we investigate an IRS-assisted PKG system, taking into account the channel spatial correlation at both the base station (BS) and the IRS. Based on the considered system model, the closed-form expression of SKR is derived analytically considering correlated eavesdropping channels. Aiming to maximize the SKR, a joint design problem of the BS’s precoding matrix and the IRS’s phase shift vector is formulated. To address this high-dimensional non-convex optimization problem, we propose a novel unsupervised deep neural network (DNN)-based algorithm with a simple structure. Different from most previous works that adopt iterative optimization to solve the problem, the proposed DNN-based algorithm directly obtains the BS precoding and IRS phase shifts as the output of the DNN. Simulation results reveal that the proposed DNN-based algorithm outperforms the benchmark methods with regard to SKR.
The potential of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) for energy-efficient and performance-boosted wireless communications is recently gaining remarkable research attention, motivating their consideration for various 5-th Generation (5G) Advanced and beyond applications. In this paper, we consider a Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) Physical Layer Security (PLS) system with multiple data streams including one legitimate passive RIS and one malicious passive RIS, with the former being transparent to the multi-antenna eavesdropper and the latter’s presence being unknown at the legitimate multi-antenna transceivers. We first present a novel threat model for the RIS-boosted eavesdropping system and design a joint optimization framework for the eavesdropper’s receive combining matrix and the reflection coefficients of the malicious RIS. Focusing next on the secrecy rate maximization problem, we present an RIS-empowered PLS scheme that jointly designs the legitimate precoding matrix and number of data streams, the Artificial Noise (AN) covariance matrix, the receive combining matrix, and the reflection coefficients of the legitimate RIS. The proposed optimization algorithms, whose convergence to at least local optimum points is proved, are based on alternating maximization, minorization-maximization, and manifold optimization, including semi-closed form expressions for the optimization variables. Our extensive simulation results for two representative system setups reveal that, in the absence of a legitimate RIS, transceiver spatial filtering and AN are incapable of offering non-zero secrecy rates, even for malicious RISs with small numbers of elements. However, when anL-element legitimate RIS is deployed, confidential communication can be safeguarded against eavesdropping systems possessing even more than a5L-element malicious RIS.
Physical layer key generation (PKG) is a promising means to provide on-the-fly shared secret keys by exploiting the intrinsic randomness of the radio channel. However, the performance of PKG is highly dependent on the propagation environments. Due to its feature of controlling the wireless environment, reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is appealing to be applied in PKG. In this article, in contrast to the existing literature, we investigate both the constructive and destructive effects of RIS on the PKG scheme. For the constructive aspect, we have identified static and wave-blockage environments as two RIS-empowered-PKG applications in future wireless systems. In particular, our experimental results in a static environment showed that RIS can enhance the entropy of the secret key, achieving a key generation rate (KGR) of 97.39 bit/s with a bit disagreement rate (BDR) of 0.083. In multi-user systems where some remote users are in worse channel conditions, the proposed RIS-assisted PKG algorithm improves the sum secret key rate by more than 2 dB, compared to the literature. Furthermore, we point out that RIS could be utilized by an attacker to perform new jamming and leakage attacks and give countermeasures, respectively. Finally, we outline future research directions for PKG systems in light of the RIS.
