Abstract

Integrating quantum key distribution (QKD) with multicore fiber (MCF) optical networks to build large-capacity and high-security networks is a promising method to meet the traffic and security demand in the future. In this paper, an innovative algorithm named QKD Transceiver Planning for Key Generation and Consumption Matching (QTP-KGCM) is proposed to solve the problem of mismatch between key generation and consumption. On demand of achieving synergistic transmission of classical and quantum signal, a heuristic resource allocation algorithm named Classical and Quantum signals Layered Interleaved (CQLI) is proposed. Furthermore, this paper pro poses the Deep Q Network based Synergistic Resource Allocation (DQN-based SRA) algorithm in response to the limited effective ness, which is a common issue in heuristic resource allocation algorithms. Simulation results show that QTP-KGCM algorithm can ensure that secure key rate of generation exceeds consumption rate 94.7% of the time in real-time key consumption scenario, while secure key quantity of generation exceeds consumption 99.5% of the time in cumulative key consumption scenario. Compared with existing conventional channel allocation algorithm, CQLI algorithm achieves a maximum increase of 0.485 in synergistic degree. DQN-based SRA algorithm demonstrates superior synergistic degree performance, achieving a maximum improvement of 0.213 and 0.198 in synergistic degree compared with the CQLI algorithm and existing synergistic core and wave length allocation algorithm, respectively.

A Resource Allocation Scheme for Independent Core Transmission of Quantum Key Distribution

Lingfeng Lu, Yongmei Sun, Yaoxian Gao +1 more

To ensure the security of optical networks in the future, integrating quantum key distribution (QKD) with optical networks is one of the solutions. Moreover, the optical network based on multi-core fiber (MCF) is also one of the ways to improve the transmission capacity. Therefore, we study the integration of QKD into MCF-enabled optical networks. Aiming at the resource allocation problem of MCF-enabled wavelength division multiplexing optical networks, this paper proposes a resource allocation scheme which is suitable for independent-core-transmission of classical signals and quantum signals. For core resource, we propose the alternate core allocation algorithm. For wavelength resource, we propose the iteration-based wavelength allocation algorithm. The overall scheme uses the proposed two algorithms to first allocate the core and then allocate the wavelength. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme has a great improvement in secret key rate (SKR) compared with the benchmark scheme on the regular hexagonal 7-core fiber and 19-core fiber. And the proposed scheme still has good performance under long transmission distance and high classical signal power.

Resource Allocation in Twin-Field QKD Coexisting With Classical Communication Over Multicore Fiber

Weiwen Kong, Yongmei Sun, Jianjun Tang +6 more

With the development of quantum key distribution (QKD), integration with classical communications has become one of the future development trends. In this paper, in order to solve the problems of fiber resource waste and noise interference in twin-field QKD (TF-QKD) where servo signals exist, we design a high-security and fiber-saving classical-quantum coexistence architecture that ensures both high security and efficient utilization of fiber resources, which is designed to be seamlessly compatible with quantum signals, servo signals of TF-QKD, and bidirectional classical signals over multicore fiber (MCF). Subsequently, an in-depth analysis of noise on the quantum channels is conducted. Furthermore, a quantum-priority core and wavelength allocation (QPCWA) scheme is proposed, which effectively reduces the noise interference from servo signals and classical signals to QKD, improving the performance of QKD. Simulation results show that the QPCWA scheme can extend the secure transmission distance up to nearly 300 km compared with the benchmark scheme. Experimental results show that the QPCWA scheme can effectively reduce noise photons by 50.8%. This research establishes a technical foundation for the integrated deployment of QKD and classical communications.

Synergistic Resource Allocation for Hybrid Quantum-Classical Optical Networks: Routing, Wavelength Assignment, and Power Configuration

Yuhang Liu, Xiaosong Yu, Yongli Zhao +3 more

Optical communications provide high capacity and scalability, while quantum communications, particularly through quantum key distribution (QKD), enable information-theoretic security. However, it still remains challenging to deliver both high throughput communication and long-term security within a hybrid quantum-classical optical network. Specifically, classical optical resources can be reallocated to support QKD, aiming to achieve synergistic resource utilization that surpasses the sum of individual functionalities. In this work, we formulate a networking model that captures the resource allocation constraints, aiming to figure out the necessary conversion of classical optical resources to QKD capacity while maintain the connectivity of classical optical communication. Based on that, we propose a synergistic resource allocation strategy, implemented through heuristic routing, wavelength assignment, and power configuration (SRWP) algorithms. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed SRWP algorithm, with the objective of network-wide average secret key rate (SKR) maximization (SRWP-ARM), enhances the average SKR from the order of kbit/s to Mbit/s at GHz-level pulse repetition rates. In a 9-node mesh network topology with 50 km links, the algorithm achieves this gain with zero service blocking under a traffic load of 100 erlangs. At a higher load of 300 erlangs, it maintains a service blocking probability as low as 1.24% while still achieving an average SKR of 18.05 kbit/s. This represents the best trade-off between classical service connectivity and secret key generation across all evaluated algorithms.

Synergistic Resource Allocation in Space Division Multiplexed Data Center Optical Networks Secured with Quantum Key Distribution

Xueqin Ren, Yongmei Sun, Chuan Xie +1 more

In this article, we propose two novel core prioritization and crosstalk aware (CP-XT-Aware) algorithms, including CP-XT-Aware with wavelength grouping (CPWG-XT-Aware) and CP-XT-Aware with wavelength reservation (CPWR-XT-Aware), aiming to realize the synergistic transmission of classical and quantum signals in quantum key distribution (QKD)-enabled optical data center networks based on wavelength-division-multiplexing and space-division-multiplexing, For comparison, we introduce the core and wavelength random allocation without XT-Aware, called the CWRA. Analytical simulations show that the both proposed algorithms can simultaneously improve the average secure key rate and reduce blocking probabilities under dynamic traffic scenarios in different network topologies, compared to the CWRA. Particularly, the CPWG-XT-Aware performs exceptionally well in QKD under the low traffic load, while the CPWR-XT-Aware excels under the high traffic load.

Experimental spatial-spectral allocation for quantum-classical coexistence over multicore fiber

Weiwen Kong, Tianqi Dou, Anxu Zhang +7 more

The convergence of quantum key distribution (QKD) with classical optical networks represents a pivotal advancement in secure communication technologies. This paper presents an experimental investigation of a resource allocation framework for co-transmitting QKD and classical signals through multicore fiber (MCF). We first analyze theoretical model characterizing inter-core noise interference mechanisms between classical and quantum channels over MCF. Building on this analysis, a noise-aware spatial-spectral resource allocation scheme is proposed, coordinating resources across two dimensions: core allocation via a Cartesian coordinate-based hierarchy ensures universal compatibility with arbitrary MCF configurations, while adaptive wavelength assignment dynamically suppresses single or dual noise sources. Experimental validation demonstrates the scheme's superior noise suppression capabilities and enhanced secure key rates compared to benchmark approaches, achieving reductions of ⩾ 4.2 dB in noise photons and improvements of ⩾ 10 kbps in secure key rate. This work establishes a practical foundation for implementing QKD networks within existing fiber infrastructure, advancing the realization of scalable quantum-classical coexistance.
