Abstract

Real-time CV-QKD Bob achieves peak 0.65 Mbps secret key rates over 25.7 km of fiber while co-propagating 14 adjacent classical channels. Performance degrades at higher classical launch powers due to higher excess noise from crosstalk and possible nonlinear optical effects.

High-rate continuous-variable quantum key distribution over 100 km fiber with composable security

Heng Wang, Yang Li, Ting Ye +14 more

Quantum key distribution (QKD), providing a way to generate secret keys with information-theoretic security, is arguably one of the most significant achievements in quantum information. The continuous-variable QKD (CV-QKD) offers the potential advantage of achieving a higher secret key rate (SKR) within a metro area, as well as being compatible with the mature telecom industry. However, the SKR and transmission distance of state-of-the-art CV-QKD systems are currently limited. Here, based on the proposed orthogonal-frequency-division-multiplexing (OFDM) CV-QKD protocol, we demonstrate a high-rate multi-carrier (MC) CV-QKD with a 10 GHz symbol rate that achieves Gbps SKR within 10 km and Mbps SKR over 100 km in the finite-size regime under composable security against collective attacks. The results are achieved by suitable optimization of subcarrier number and modulation variance, well-controlled excess noise induced by both the OFDM mechanism and the efficient DSP scheme, and high-performance post-processing capacity realized by the heterogeneous computing scheme. The composable finite-size SKR reaches 1779.45 Mbps@5 km, 1025.49 Mbps@10 km, 370.50 Mbps@25 km, 99.93 Mbps@50 km, 25.70 Mbps@75 km, and 2.25 Mbps@100 km, which improves the SKR by two orders of magnitude and quintuples the maximal transmission distance compared to the most recently reported CV-QKD results [ Nat. Commun. 13 , 4740 ( 2022 ) NCAOBW 2041-1723 10.1038/s41467-022-32161-y ]. Interestingly, it is experimentally verified that the SKR of the proposed MC CV-QKD can approach five times larger than that of the single-carrier CV-QKD with the same symbol rate without additional hardware costs. Our work constitutes a critical step toward future high-speed quantum metropolitan and access networks.

Coexistence of continuous variable QKD with intense DWDM classical channels

Rupesh Kumar, Hao Qin, Romain Alléaume

We demonstrate experimentally the feasibility of continuous variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) in dense-wavelength-division multiplexing networks (DWDM), where QKD will typically have to coexist with several co-propagating (forward or backward) C-band classical channels whose launch power is around 0 dBm. We have conducted experimental tests of the coexistence of CV-QKD multiplexed with an intense classical channel, for different input powers and different DWDM wavelengths. Over a 25 km fiber, a CV-QKD operated over the 1530.12 nm channel can tolerate the noise arising from up to 11.5 dBm classical channel at 1550.12 nm in the forward direction (9.7 dBm in backward). A positive key rate (0.49 kbits s −1 ) can be obtained at 75 km with classical channel power of respectively −3 and −9 dBm in forward and backward. Based on these measurements, we have also simulated the excess noise and optimized channel allocation for the integration of CV-QKD in some access networks. We have, for example, shown that CV-QKD could coexist with five pairs of channels (with nominal input powers: 2 dBm forward and 1 dBm backward) over a 25 km WDM-PON network. The obtained results demonstrate the outstanding capacity of CV-QKD to coexist with classical signals of realistic intensity in optical networks.

Sub-Mbps key-rate continuous-variable quantum key distribution with local local oscillator over 100-km fiber

Yaodi Pi, Heng Wang, Yan Pan +6 more

We experimentally demonstrated a sub-Mbps key rate Gaussian-modulated coherent-state (GMCS) continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) over a 100-km transmission distance. To efficiently control the excess noise, the quantum signal and the pilot tone are co-transmitted in the fiber channel based on wideband frequency and polarization multiplexing methods. Furthermore, a high-accuracy data-assisted time domain equalization algorithm is carefully designed to compensate the phase noise and polarization variation in low signal-to-noise ratio. The asymptotic secure key rate (SKR) of the demonstrated CV-QKD is experimentally calculated to be 7.55 Mbps, 1.87 Mbps, and 0.51 Mbps over a transmission distance of 50 km, 75 km, and 100 km, respectively. The experimentally demonstrated that the CV-QKD system significantly improves the transmission distance and SKR compared to the state-of-art GMCS CV-QKD experimental results, and shows the potential for long-distance and high-speed secure quantum key distribution.
