Local Control of Parity and Charge in Nanoscale Superconducting Lead Islands

Stefano Trivini, Jon Ortuzar, Katerina Vaxevani +3 more

Small superconducting islands can exhibit charge quantization, where Coulomb interactions compete with Cooper pairing. Using scanning tunneling spectroscopy, we probe this interplay by measuring the charging energy (E_{C}) and the pairing energy (Δ) of individual Pb nanoislands. Below a critical island size, where E_{C}>Δ, we observe a crossover between even and odd parity ground states. By applying controlled voltage pulses, we continuously tune the island's electrostatic potential and map the full charge-parity landscape. These results demonstrate tunable superconducting ground states, offering a potential platform for qubit design and control.

Parity effect in a superconducting island in a tunable dissipative environment

Watson Kuo, Cen-Shawn Wu, Jia-Hong Shyu +1 more

We have experimentally studied Coulomb oscillation in a superconducting single-electron transistor, where electromagnetic-environment impedance was controlled using a one-dimensional array of superconducting quantum interference devices. By decreasing environment impedance, the Coulomb oscillation exhibited a crossover from $2e$ to $1e$ periodicity. In addition, the $1e$ component was enhanced when additional noise was introduced by connecting a potential meter to the central island of the transistor. We propose a theoretical analysis for this parity effect that includes the effect of fluctuations arising from the finite noise temperature of the electromagnetic environment.

Charge-vortex interplay in a superconducting Coulomb-blockaded island

Ivan M. Khaymovich, V. F. Maisi, Jukka P Pekola +1 more

We show that charge transfer through a small superconducting (S) island of a single-electron transistor is strongly affected by vorticity. This interplay of charge and rotational degrees of freedom in a mesoscopic superconductor occurs through the effect of vorticity on the quantum mechanical spectrum of electron-hole excitations. The subgap quasiparticle levels in vortices can host an extra electron, thus suppressing the so-called parity effect in the S island. We propose to measure the collective dynamics of vorticity and electric charge via the charge pumping effect caused by alternating vortex entry and exit controlled by a periodic magnetic field.

We have experimentally studied Coulomb oscillation in a superconducting single-electron transistor, where electromagnetic-environment impedance was controlled using a one-dimensional array of superconducting quantum interference devices. By decreasing environment impedance, the Coulomb oscillation exhibited a crossover from 2e2e2e to 1e1e1e periodicity. In addition, the 1e1e1e component was enhanced when additional noise was introduced by connecting a potential meter to the central island of the transistor. We propose a theoretical analysis for this parity effect that includes the effect of fluctuations arising from the finite noise temperature of the electromagnetic environment.
