Temporal Quantum-State Tomography of Narrowband Biphotons

Abstract

We demonstrate a technique of quantum-state tomography for measuring the complex temporal wave function of narrowband biphotons with polarization-dependent and time-resolved two-photon interference. While the amplitude function of the biphoton waveform is directly related to the second-order correlation function which is determined by the two-photon coincidence measurement, the phase function is retrieved from six sets of time-resolved two-photon interference measurements projected onto different polarization subspaces. We apply this technique to experimentally reconstruct the temporal quantum states of the narrow-band biphotons generated from the spontaneous four-wave mixing in cold atoms. As compared with the homodyne detection, our method doesn't require any external phase reference.

Temporal Quantum-State Tomography of Narrowband Biphotons

We describe and demonstrate a quantum state tomography for measuring the complex temporal waveform of narrowband biphotons. Through six sets of two-photon interference measurements projected in different polarization subspaces, we can construct the time-frequency entangled twophoton joint amplitude and phase functions in continuous-variable time domain. For the first time, we apply this technique to experimentally determine the temporal quantum states of narrowband biphotons generated from spontaneous four-wave mixing in cold atoms, and fully confirm the theoretical predictions.

Interferometric Measurement of the Biphoton Wave Function

Federica A. Beduini, Joanna A. Zielińska, Vito Giovanni Lucivero +2 more

Interference between an unknown two-photon state (a "biphoton") and the two-photon component of a reference state gives a phase-sensitive arrival-time distribution containing full information about the biphoton temporal wave function. Using a coherent state as a reference, we observe this interference and reconstruct the wave function of single-mode biphotons from a low-intensity narrow band squeezed vacuum state.

Measuring the frequency-time two-photon wavefunction of narrowband entangled photons from cold atoms via stimulated emission

Kwang-Kyoon Park, Jin-Hun Kim, Tianming Zhao +2 more

Cold atom based narrowband entangled photon sources are important for efficient atom - photon interaction, which is at the heart of long-distance quantum communication and quantum memory protocols. Complete characterization of the narrowband entangled photons requires acquiring the frequency-time two-photon wavefunction, involving both joint temporal intensity (JTI) and joint temporal phase (JTP) measurements. Here, we demonstrate stimulated emission tomography of the frequency-time two-photon wavefunction of narrowband entangled photons from cold atoms. We show more than six orders of magnitude (x106) improvement in the measurement time for obtaining JTI and JTP compared to the conventional direct photon counting method, thus paving the way toward ultrafast high-resolution quantum tomography of photonic quantum states. Narrowband biphotons with polarization-frequency-coupled entanglement

Chi Shu, Xianxin Guo, Peng Chen +2 more

We demonstrate the generation of narrowband biphotons with polarization-frequency-coupled entanglement from spontaneous four-wave mixing in cold atoms. The coupling between polarization and frequency is realized through a frequency shifter and linear optics. When the polarization-frequency degrees of freedom are decoupled, it is robust to create polarization and frequency Bell states, confirmed by the polarization quantum-state tomography and the two-photon temporal quantum beating. Making use of the polarization-frequency coupling to transfer polarization phase retardation to the entangled frequency modes, we produce a frequency Bell state with tunable phase difference between its two bases.
