Abstract

We report the direct characterization of energy-time entanglement of narrow-band biphotons produced from spontaneous four-wave mixing in cold atoms. The Stokes and anti-Stokes two-photon temporal correlation is measured by single-photon counters with nanosecond temporal resolution, and their joint spectrum is determined by using a narrow linewidth optical cavity. The energy-time entanglement is verified by the joint frequency-time uncertainty product of 0.063±0.0044, which does not only violate the separability criterion but also satisfies the continuous variable Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen steering inequality.

Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen Entanglement of Narrow-Band Photons from Cold Atoms

Jong Chan Lee, Kwang-Kyoon Park, Tianming Zhao +1 more

Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) entanglement introduced in 1935 deals with two particles that are entangled in their positions and momenta. Here we report the first experimental demonstration of EPR position-momentum entanglement of narrow-band photon pairs generated from cold atoms. By using two-photon quantum ghost imaging and ghost interference, we demonstrate explicitly that the narrow-band photon pairs violate the separability criterion, confirming EPR entanglement. We further demonstrate continuous variable EPR steering for positions and momenta of the two photons. Our new source of EPR-entangled narrow-band photons is expected to play an essential role in spatially multiplexed quantum information processing, such as, storage of quantum correlated images, quantum interface involving hyperentangled photons, etc.

Temporal Purity and Quantum Interference of Single Photons from Two Independent Cold Atomic Ensembles

Peng Qian, Zhenjie Gu, Rong Cao +4 more

The temporal purity of single photons is crucial to the indistinguishability of independent photon sources for the fundamental study of the quantum nature of light and the development of photonic technologies. Currently, the technique for single photons heralded from time-frequency entangled biphotons created in nonlinear crystals does not guarantee the temporal-quantum purity, except using spectral filtering. Nevertheless, an entirely different situation is anticipated for narrow-band biphotons with a coherence time far longer than the time resolution of a single-photon detector. Here we demonstrate temporally pure single photons with a coherence time of 100 ns, directly heralded from the time-frequency entangled biphotons generated by spontaneous four-wave mixing in cold atomic ensembles, without any supplemented filters or cavities. A near-perfect purity and indistinguishability are both verified through Hong-Ou-Mandel quantum interference using single photons from two independent cold atomic ensembles. The time-frequency entanglement provides a route to manipulate the pure temporal state of the single-photon source.

Engineering Frequency-Time Quantum Correlation of Narrow-Band Biphotons from Cold Atoms

Young‐Wook Cho, Kwang-Kyoon Park, Jong Chan Lee +1 more

The nonclassical photon pair, generated via a parametric process, is naturally endowed with a specific form of frequency-time quantum correlations. Here, we report complete control of frequency-time quantum correlations of narrow-band biphotons generated via spontaneous four-wave mixing in a cold atomic ensemble. We have experimentally confirmed the generation of frequency-anticorrelated, frequency-correlated, and frequency-uncorrelated narrow-band biphoton states, as well as verifying the strong nonclassicality of the correlations. Our work opens up new possibilities for engineering narrow-band entangled photons for various quantum optical and quantum information applications.

Temporal Quantum-State Tomography of Narrowband Biphotons

Xianxin Guo, Peng Chen, Chi Shu +2 more

We describe and demonstrate a quantum state tomography for measuring the complex temporal waveform of narrowband biphotons. Through six sets of two-photon interference measurements projected in different polarization subspaces, we can construct the time-frequency entangled twophoton joint amplitude and phase functions in continuous-variable time domain. For the first time, we apply this technique to experimentally determine the temporal quantum states of narrowband biphotons generated from spontaneous four-wave mixing in cold atoms, and fully confirm the theoretical predictions.

Temporal pure single photons generated from time-frequency entangled biphotons

Peng Qian, Zhejie Gu, J. F. Chen +1 more

Narrow-band time-frequency entangled biphotons are generated from spontaneous four-wave mixing in cold atom clouds. The coherence time of the entangled biphotons can be extended to sub-microseconds by the slow light effect. The temporal wavefunction of the biphotons can be manipulated through modulating the spectral or spatial mode of the controlling laser beams. Concerning a pair of entangled biphoton and the resulting heralded single photon, it was commonly believed that, time-frequency entanglement damages the temporal purity of the single photon. However, the case is totally different for biphotons with long coherence time which is far beyond the time resolution of single-photondetectors. We demonstrate that, the single photon heralded from these time-frequency entangled biphotons is in a pure temporal state. Therefore, single photons are able to be shaped through the time-frequency entanglement with their partner photons, while the single photons could be found to be still in a pure state and thus useful for quantum information processing and communication technology.

Coherence time limit of the biphotons generated in a dense cold atomcloud

Zhiguang Han, Peng Qian, Lu Zhou +2 more

Biphotons with narrow bandwidth and long coherence time can enhance light-atom interaction, which leads to strong coupling between photonic and atomic qubits. Such strong coupling is desirable in quantum information processing, quantum storage and communication. In particular, paired photons with a long coherence time over submicroseconds facilitate the direct manipulation of biphoton wavefunction. In this paper, we report the narrow-band biphotons with a coherence time of 2.34 μs generated from spontaneous four-wave mixing (SFWM) in a dense cold atom cloud, in which the anti-Stokes photons go through a narrow electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT) window. In our knowledge, this is the best record of coherence time for paired photons achieved so far. A number of factors limiting the coherence time are analyzed in detail. We find the EIT coherence plays an essential role in determining the coherence time for paired photons. The EIT dephasing rate is the ultimate limit to the coherence time, and an ultra-long coherence time above ten microseconds is possible by further improvement of the dephasing rate below 100 kHz.
