Opportunities in quantum sensor applications

Kai Bongs

Quantum Sensors have been named one of the top 10 emerging technologies of the year by the World Economic Forum in 2020. This talk will highlight some of the commercial opportunities opened up by quantum sensors based on atomic probe particles. These sensors promise to offer disruptive new capabilities in sensing what is underneath the ground, which parts of the brain are active and detecting small objects in the air. I will present new prototypes and first commercial spin-offs branching out form this exciting area of quantum technologies.

Quantum Systems Engineering: A structured approach to accelerating the development of a quantum technology industry

M. J. Everitt, Michael Henshaw, V. M. Dwyer

The exciting possibilities in the field of new quantum technologies extend far beyond the well-reported application of quantum computing. Precision timing, gravity sensors and imagers, cryptography, navigation, metrology, energy harvesting and recovery, biomedical sensors and imagers, and real-time optimisers all indicate the potential for quantum technologies to provide the basis of a technological revolution. From the field of Systems Engineering emerges a focused strategy for the development cycle, enabling the existence of hugely complex products. It is through the adoption of systems thinking that the semiconductor industry has achieved massive industrial and economic impact. Quantum technologies rely on delicate, non-local and/or entangled degrees of freedom - leading to great potential, but also posing new challenges to the development of products and industries. We discuss some of the challenges and opportunities regarding the implementation of Systems Engineering and systems thinking into the quantum technologies space.

Photonics for Quantum sensors

Kai Bongs

Quantum sensors have been named a top 10 emerging technology by the World Economic Forum in 2020. This is mainly driven by their imminent application potential and the ability to open up qualitatively new sensing areas, such as sensing into the ground, or seeing the brain at work. We are now just one step away from commercial breakthrough applications in civil engineering and clinical trials. With this success, the next step will be to develop integrated photonics components to open up mass markets in water, navigation and gaming. I will provide an overview of the working principle of an atomic quantum sensor and lay out the parameter needs for photonic integration.
